On January 31, 2025, Nathan Harper, a 41-year-old white male, was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer northbound on Academy Road near Brooks Lane in Portland, Tennessee, when Sumner County Sheriff's deputies initiated a high-speed chase of a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500. The pursued vehicle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with Harper’s vehicle, causing it to overturn. Bystander Harper was pronounced dead at the crash site. Authorities have not disclosed the reason for initiating the pursuit. The crash is under investigation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
