On December 11, 2024, Jefferson Parish deputies responded to a shoplifting incident at Lakeside Mall in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. An off-duty deputy observed a group of women fleeing the mall in a red SUV. On-duty deputies initiated a pursuit that lasted less than a minute. Police allege that they “called off the chase” moments before the fleeing SUV collided with another vehicle on the St. Bernard Avenue off-ramp in Orleans Parish. Three individuals were in the struck vehicle. Giselle Smith, a 17-year-old senior at West Jefferson High School, died at the scene. A second 17-year-old female student later died from her injuries. Their identities have not been fully disclosed.

The incident remains under investigation by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and the New Orleans Police Department.

On 12/10/2024, at approximately 10:15 PM, a California Highway Patrol officer attempted to stop a silver Nissan sedan on Pleasant Valley Road near Wood Road in Camarillo for vehicle code violations. The driver, Jose Meza, did not stop. Police escalated a chase onto northbound Las Posas Road and then southbound Highway 101, reaching speeds over 100 mph. Meza attempted to exit at the Lewis Road offramp but collided with the center guardrail. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at Los Robles Regional Medical Center.
The incident is under investigation by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.

On December 10, 2024, Calera Police Department officers escalated a vehicle pursuit in Jemison, Alabama, citing "suspicious activity" as the justification. Police chased the vehicle until it crashed at the intersection of Highway 191 and County Road 42 West, resulting in the death of the female bystander.

During the pursuit, the patrol car collided with the civilian vehicle. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A Calera police officer involved in the crash sustained serious injuries and was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment.
