The police encounter began when NYPD officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop after observing the driver fail to stop at a stop sign. The initiating offense was therefore a traffic violation rather than a violent crime.

The driver continued northbound on Eldert Street while police followed. Contemporary NYPD accounts said the officers initially lost sight of the vehicle, later saw it again, and the driver accelerated away. The Mercedes-Benz entered the intersection of West Sample Road and Coral Ridge Drive and collided with a Chevrolet Traverse carrying 6-year-old Harlow Jet Tran, her great-grandmother, and other family members. On April 28, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Eric Gray, a 20-year-old fast-food employee, was riding his bicycle home along North Andrews Avenue near Northwest 15th Avenue in Pompano Beach, Florida. At that time, Broward County deputies responding to reports of a street takeover at the intersection of McNab Road and Andrews Avenue chased a 2017 Mercedes C300 Coupe.

During the pursuit, the vehicle collided with a marked BSO K-9 unit. The Mercedes then lost control, rotated clockwise, slid toward the bicycle lane and sidewalk, and struck Gray. Gray was pronounced dead at the scene by Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics.

The driver of the Mercedes was arrested and charged. The Broward County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation. Police have not disclosed the names of the involved officers.
