On January 27, 2024, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Bellwood police responded to a report of shots fired in the 200 block of 32nd Avenue. Officers discovered a man who had been shot and later died at the hospital. During the investigation, officers observed a vehicle fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. The pursuit was initiated, and the vehicle continued to travel at excessive speeds through Forest Park. The chase ended when the vehicle crashed into a tree at the intersection of Randolph and Des Plaines Avenue, bursting into flames. Two individuals inside the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

On January 18, 2024, 20-year-old Fernando Barajas-Reyes was killed while riding as a front-seat passenger in a 2016 Ford Fusion that crashed following a police pursuit in Stanislaus County. The pursuit began when Ceres Police attempted a traffic stop and the vehicle fled southbound on Highway 99. After exiting at Mitchell Road, the car sped east on Keyes Road and collided with a Ford Mustang at Geer Road. Barajas-Reyes was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash also left two other passengers and the teen driver of the Mustang hospitalized. The California Highway Patrol is investigating.

On January 16, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Michigan State Police troopers identified a 2009 Pontiac G8 suspected in a recent felonious assault and carjacking on eastbound I-69 near Morrish Road. When troopers attempted a traffic stop, the driver did not stop. Police escalated a pursuit. Police alleged that they "called off the chase" near Hammerberg Road, and immediately thereafter, the vehicle crashed into an MTA bus at the intersection of Saginaw and 9th Streets.

A male rear passenger was pronounced dead at the crash site. The driver sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized, while the front passenger was treated for minor injuries. The bus driver and a passenger sustained minor injuries.

On January 14, 2024, Wethersfield Police escalated a pursuit of a vehicle that was driving erratically. The vehicle, which had been stolen in Hartford, crashed into a tree and then into a house on Church Street in Wethersfield while police were in hot pursuit. Tragically, 14-year-old Novelle Nesmith, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was trapped and later pronounced dead.

The other two juveniles in the vehicle were injured and taken to the hospital. One juvenile was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, while the other was released after medical care.

Novelle Nesmith's family has since called for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the police chase.
