Zabina Gafoor 52, was a home health aide who was on her way home from work on foot and was standing at an intersection when she was struck by a speeding NYPD vehicle in front of a shopping center at the intersection of Beach Channel Drive and Bay 32nd Street. Four police officers were reportedly in the SUV when it slammed into a 2020 Toyota Corolla that was driven by a 44-year-old woman and then the police vehicle crashed into Gafoor, killing her. Gafoor had been a mother of two who was born in Guyana and immigrated to the United States as a child. She died from massive head trauma.The officers were not charged.

On 02/16/2023, around 12:30 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department officers attempted to stop a dark-colored SUV at White Oak Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard in Northridge. Police said the SUV and its two passengers were wanted in connection with an armed robbery committed the previous day and had been identified as armed and dangerous. The driver continued west on Roscoe Boulevard while police pursued. The pursuit covered approximately half a mile before the SUV ran a red light at Lindley Avenue and struck a black sedan traveling south through the intersection.
The sedan’s driver, Erick Barbosa-Guardado, 19, of Reseda, was pronounced dead at the scene. Barbosa-Guardado was returning home after working an evening shift at a department store. He was a sophomore at California State University, Northridge, where he was studying civil engineering and theater. He also worked at a TJ Maxx store in Tarzana, where the company said he had made a strong impression on his coworkers despite having worked there only a short time.
The two people in the SUV left the wreckage and continued running away on foot. Officers established a perimeter and arrested the person police believed had been driving the SUV. The second person remained at large when the initial reports were published. Police recovered a loaded rifle from inside the SUV. The identities of the arrested driver, the second person and the pursuing officers were not released in the available reporting.
Barbosa-Guardado’s aunt, Socorro Barbosa, spoke publicly at the crash scene. She described him as a good young man with important dreams and expressed anger that he had been killed while simply driving home. His death received additional attention because he was at least the fifth uninvolved person killed during Southern California law-enforcement pursuits within approximately one month. Two men had been killed during an LAPD pursuit in Panorama City on January 31, and a husband and wife were killed following another pursuit near Lynwood and South Gate on February 5.
LAPD Lieutenant Letisia Ruiz defended the decision to pursue, stating that officers must balance the danger created by a chase against the danger posed by someone considered armed and dangerous. Barbosa-Guardado’s death nevertheless occurred amid renewed scrutiny of LAPD pursuit practices. A previous Los Angeles Times analysis found that approximately one in ten LAPD pursuits from 2006 through 2014 resulted in injuries to civilians, and a Los Angeles County civil grand jury concluded that police pursuits were causing unnecessary bystander deaths and injuries and required improved training and oversight.
No pursuing officers were publicly identified in the available reports, and no publicly released body-camera or dash-camera footage specific to the pursuit was located. News video and photographs documented the heavily damaged vehicles and the crash scene.

Denver PD chased a man on a motorcycle on February 2, 2023, deliberately struck the motorcycle. A video obtained by the Denver Gazette Wednesday showed the responding officer's patrol car ramming into the motorcyclist, causing him to crash. He then fled on foot. Originally, police claimed that Stephen Poolson Jr., 41, then produced a gun, at which point the responding officer shot him. Poolson died later at the hospital. Police had claimed he crashed on his own and died in the crash and had to correct this to Poolson having been deliberately hit by a patrol car and being shot when he ran. On January 31, 2023, LAPD chased an allegedly stolen Toyota Tacoma pickup truck until it crashed at high speed into a vehicle, killing bystanders Timothy Schultz, 49, and Christopher Teagardin, 47. The crash occurred at the intersection of Woodman Avenue and Lanark Street in Panorama City. Police alleged that they had transitioned to tracking mode with helicopters at the time of the fatal crash. Teagardin and Schultz were lifelong friends who had gone out to pick up tacos when they were killed.

The driver, 32-year-old Oscar Delacruz, fled the scene on foot but was apprehended by authorities. He faces felony murder charges. The victims' families have called for justice, describing the tragic loss of Schultz, a father to a 16-year-old daughter, and Teagardin, a father to an 18-year-old son.

Laila Rose Hauser was parked in a Dollar General parking lot at 1 a.m. An South Carolina Highway Patrol officer drove up next to her. Apparently feeling uncomfortable, she drove away. The officer followed and attempted a traffic stop. Laila Rose Hauser did not stop and the officer escalated a high-speed chase which caused her to run into a tree and die. She had committed no crime and seemed to be afraid of the police chase only. Houser’s father used to be an employee for the same Sheriff’s Office that chased Laila Houser to her death. Oddly, Laila Hauser did not seem to trust the officer from her father’s former PD and fled from him. No officers were charged.

Kennedy J. Edmond was allegedly driving down the street in Wichita when police saw him and felt that he matched a description of someone from a larceny in the area. They began following him, escalating a chase ending in a fatal crash in which Edmond crashed and rolled over at Osie and Washington around 8:30 a.m. January 26, 2023.
While the officer alleged that he had “called off the pursuit” just before the crash, the KHP did report that this incident was listed as a police pursuit at the time of the crash. The KHP ultimately changed its narrative to “not in pursuit”.
The officer had reportedly chased the car at a high rate of speed without lights and sirens most of the way and turned on his lights and sirens toward the end of the pursuit. He also called off the pursuit after about 15 seconds when the vehicle started driving at high speed.’No officers were charged.

Verna White, 44, was driving down the street in the residential area of First Avenue and 10th Street in Moultrie, had just returned from singing in her church and was just a few feet away from her home where she lived with her 2 sons when a car flew down the street at 95 mph, hit a house, telephone pole and then Verna White’s car with police after it. She was killed by the police chase crash by Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office that had ended with a car slamming into her at 95 mph with police racing behind it at around 10 p.m. The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team was then called to the scene after it was found that the accident was actually prosecutable. Despite this consideration of wrongdoing by officers responsible for this chase, no officers were charged.
