On October 27, 2024, at approximately 1:05 a.m., Georgia State Patrol (GSP) troopers observed a white Mercedes-Benz sedan traveling at 75 mph in a 40 mph zone on Dawson Road in Albany, Georgia. Troopers initiated a traffic stop by activating emergency lights and sirens. The driver did not stop, prompting troopers to escalate the situation into a high-speed pursuit. The vehicle turned onto Magnolia Street, continuing southbound at high speeds. As the vehicle approached a set of railroad tracks, it accelerated, became airborne, and crashed upon landing. The pursuing troopers found the driver inside the vehicle with head and facial injuries. Three male passengers, including 18-year-old Jaquan Hill, were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Troopers found loaded firearms inside the vehicle. The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident.

A Goodyear PD officer with emergency lights ran a red light at unknown speed, hit and killed motorcyclist Jacob Vela. The officer’s speed was unknown. Police state that the officer had lights and sirens activated and Vela should have seen him. Then a bystander dropped video showing no lights and sirens were on \, that Vela had a green light and the officer went into the intersection against a red light without warning, killing Vela. The vehicle subsequently ran off the roadway into a ditch and caught fire. Cross was pronounced dead at the crash site. An investigation by the ASP Criminal Investigation Division was conducted, and Third Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Devon Holder determined that the use of deadly force by the troopers was justified.

On 10/07/2024, 31-year-old Tyrone Mason of Durham was killed when his 2018 Chevrolet Malibu crashed into a concrete median barrier on Capital Boulevard near Wake Forest Road in Raleigh following a pursuit initiated by North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Garrett Macario.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Macario was conducting traffic enforcement on Capital Boulevard when he began following Mason. Macario alleged that Mason was traveling approximately 70 mph in a 40 mph zone and attempted to stop him.

Macario pursued Mason for approximately one minute and nine seconds. Police video subsequently showed Macario ending the pursuit, turning off his emergency equipment and losing sight of Mason. Shortly afterward, Mason lost control of the Malibu and crashed into the concrete median barrier. He died at the scene.

What happened after the crash subsequently became the subject of a State Bureau of Investigation inquiry, prosecutorial review, extensive public-record litigation and a wrongful-death lawsuit.

Macario's body-camera footage showed that after discovering the fatal crash, he telephoned his supervisor, Sgt. Matthew Morrison. Morrison asked Macario whether he had reported the pursuit over the radio. When Macario said that he had not, Morrison told him not to disclose to responding Raleigh police that he had attempted to stop Mason.

Morrison told Macario to characterize the incident as though he had simply encountered the wreck. Macario agreed.

The body-camera footage also showed that Macario knew the crash was fatal but did not immediately attempt to render aid to Mason. When asked whether he had checked on the driver, Macario said he had not yet done so.

As a result, Mason's death was initially presented to his family as a single-vehicle crash rather than a death immediately following a police pursuit. His mother, Henrietta Mason, was told that a state trooper had merely encountered her son's crashed vehicle.

Henrietta Mason did not believe that account and began investigating her son's death herself. She and family members returned repeatedly to Capital Boulevard, contacted businesses seeking surveillance footage and searched for witnesses. Her efforts ultimately preceded official scrutiny of the troopers' conduct.

The State Bureau of Investigation opened an investigation after information concerning Macario's involvement was brought forward. Investigators reviewed Macario's body-camera footage and communications with Morrison and documented the discrepancy between what the recordings showed and what Macario had told Raleigh police.

Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman subsequently concluded that Macario and Morrison had been dishonest about the circumstances surrounding Mason's crash. On October 4, 2024, Anaheim Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle on State College Road. The driver of the vehicle failed to pull over and instead drove away. Police escalated a high-speed chase initiated by the police. During the pursuit, the vehicle crashed into a light pole, resulting in the death of 32-year-old Roberto Carlos Venta-Munoz, who was a passenger in the vehicle. The driver was injured but survived the crash. The police pursuit was terminated before the crash occurred, but the chase ultimately led to the fatal crash.

On 10/04/2024, Thomas Welch, 42, was killed during a police chase initiated by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies reportedly observed Welch operating a motorcycle at high speed on Sweden Road in Waterford and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Welch did not stop. Officers escalated a pursuit at high speeds along rural roads.

According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies briefly lost sight of the motorcycle and moments later discovered it crashed into a tree on Sweden Road. Welch was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crash is under investigation by the Maine State Police, and findings will be reviewed by the Oxford County District Attorney's Office.
