On May 16, 2024, at approximately 12:39 a.m., Woodstock Police responded to a domestic incident in the 200 block of Douglas Street near Calhoun Street in Woodstock, Illinois. Upon arrival, officers learned that 25-year-old Fabian Velazquez had discharged a firearm inside the residence before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. Officers spotted Velazquez's vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but he disregarded commands and accelerated southbound on Route 47 at a high rate of speed. Near the intersection of Route 47 and Route 176 in Lakewood, Velazquez lost control of his vehicle, which veered off the road, went airborne, and crashed onto Swanson Road. The vehicle rolled over during the crash. Velazquez was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Northwestern Hospital Huntley, where he died from his injuries. On May 20, 2024, Baldwin County deputies responded to a false emergency call about an alleged emergency with a description of a vehicle to look for. The responding officer, Sgt. Reid White, was traveling on Kings Road when he spotted Louis Mazzola, 67, who was returning home from work. Sgt. White initiated a traffic stop, activating his lights and siren. Mazzola turned left onto Back in the Woods Way and White attempted to pass Mazzola’s vehicle on the left at high speed. White crashed into Mazzola’s vehicle, causing Mazzola to be ejected. On 05/09/2024, 71-year-old Juanita Vidal was killed and her 44-year-old daughter, Jessica Vidal, was seriously injured when a driver being pursued by New York City police crashed into them as they crossed Eldert Street at Knickerbocker Avenue in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

The police encounter began when NYPD officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop after observing the driver fail to stop at a stop sign. The initiating offense was therefore a traffic violation rather than a violent crime.

The driver continued northbound on Eldert Street while police followed. Contemporary NYPD accounts said the officers initially lost sight of the vehicle, later saw it again, and the driver accelerated away. NYPD maintained that the vehicle took off before officers could reactivate their emergency lights.

Other evidence and witness accounts have raised questions about that characterization. On 01/04/2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m., a Coral Springs police officer attempted to stop a 2023 Mercedes-Benz after observing what police described as illegally dark window tint. The driver accelerated away at speeds reported to exceed 100 mph after the officer activated emergency lights and siren. Police later alleged that the officer discontinued the pursuit in accordance with department policy, although the fatal collision occurred only moments later.
The Mercedes-Benz entered the intersection of West Sample Road and Coral Ridge Drive and collided with a Chevrolet Traverse carrying 6-year-old Harlow Jet Tran, her great-grandmother, and other family members. The impact split the Traverse nearly in half. The rear section of the SUV, with Harlow still secured in her child safety seat, was torn from the vehicle and launched high into the air before coming to rest between a tree and a dumpster. Harlow was flown to Broward Health Medical Center, where she died from her injuries. Her great-grandmother and other occupants of the Traverse were also injured.
The fatal crash has become the subject of a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by Harlow's parents, Danny Tran and Samari Curbelo, against the City of Coral Springs. The lawsuit alleges the attempted traffic stop was unreasonable because it originated over a minor window-tint violation and unnecessarily created the chain of events that led to Harlow's death. The complaint further alleges that surveillance video shows the police vehicle arriving at the crash scene only seconds after the collision. The City of Coral Springs disputes the allegations and maintains that the officer acted within department policy. The officer's identity has not been publicly released.
