On 03/17/2024, Michelle Wall, 44, was driving to church when police chased a stolen Jeep into her vehicle at East 156th Street and Calcutta Avenue in Cleveland, killing her. According to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by her mother, Elizabeth Wall, former Euclid officer Benjamin Wilcox initiated the pursuit and Lt. Vashon Williams authorized it, despite dangerous conditions and speeds alleged to have reached up to 120 mph. The lawsuit states the chase violated department policy and continued across jurisdictional boundaries. After the crash, officers allegedly continued pursuing the occupants of the stolen vehicle on foot instead of providing medical assistance to Wall, and a nurse who attempted to help was reportedly instructed to step away. The City of Euclid has stated its internal review found the officers did nothing wrong.

On 03/17/2024, at approximately 7:00 p.m., a 24-year-old Aurora resident reported to the Aurora Police Department that he was the victim of an armed carjacking near East 17th Avenue and Clinton Street. Within minutes, officers located the stolen 2007 Jeep Cherokee near the intersection of Dallas Street and East 25th Avenue. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled. Police escalated a pursuit.

The pursuit lasted approximately four blocks, ending when the driver lost control of the stolen vehicle after hitting a speed bump in the 1900 block of Dayton Street. The vehicle collided with several parked cars, including one occupied by 24-year-old Oliver Jose Zeledon Gongora. Gongora was fatally injured in the crash.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, a 17-year-old male from Aurora, was apprehended at the scene. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, treated, and released into police custody. Due to his age, his identity has not been publicly released.

The officers involved in the pursuit have been placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol. The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is conducting an independent investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash, including accident reconstruction and whether law enforcement conduct complied with Colorado law. Pedestrian Cody Shelton was a restaurant chef who was walking on 7th and River at 1 a.m. when run over and killed by a car being chased by police for a narcotics warrant. The car fled. Tustin Street in Orange, California, when he was fatally struck by a vehicle involved in a high-speed police chase conducted by the Orange Police Department. Ripley, Ohio officer Caleb Savage chased Ryan Mitchell from Ohio into Kentucky and hunted him until he crashed. When the vehicle crashed, Mitchell died and the officer fled the scene without rendering aid. The officer resigned from the Ripley PD and has so far been indicted for charges of reckless homicide, failure to render aid and leaving the scene of an accident. Officer Caleb Savage was charged with reckless homicide.

On February 10, 2024, at approximately 1:14 a.m., a Van Buren County Sheriff's deputy observed a white 2003 Toyota Camry speeding eastbound on Territorial Road in Keeler Township. The deputy escalated a chase, and the 27-year-old driver, Jose Gonzalez-Gutierrez, did not stop. The chase continued on County Road 681 for approximately 3.5 miles, with speeds reaching near 100 mph. Police alleged that they "momentarily lost sight of the vehicle" and immediately came upon the Camry, which had collided off the road into a tree in the 66000 block of County Road 681 in Lawrence Township. Gonzalez-Gutierrez was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the crash site.

On March 8, 2024, at approximately 11:15 a.m., the U.S. Border Patrol El Centro Sector communications center reported a stolen white Dodge Caravan near the California Department of Food and Agriculture Station on Interstate 8 in Winterhaven, California. A Border Patrol agent located the vehicle at the intersection of I-8 and State Route 7 near Calexico and confirmed its stolen status. The agent initiated a traffic stop on SR 7, approximately three-quarters of a mile south of Heber Road. The driver initially complied but then re-entered the vehicle and fled southbound on SR 7, turning west onto State Route 98.

A Supervisory Border Patrol Agent deployed a Vehicle Immobilization Device (VID) near the intersection of SR 98 and Aderholdt Road, deflating the vehicle's front tires. Despite this, the driver continued westbound until the vehicle crashed. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The California Highway Patrol and Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility are investigating the incident.

On March 7, 2024, at approximately 2:00 PM, Muscogee County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) Special Operations Unit initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle operated by 27-year-old Demon Shaquille Moore, who was accompanied by 27-year-old Daizia Leatrice Williams. Moore did not stop. Deputies escalated the chase along Veterans Parkway in Columbus, Georgia. During the pursuit, deputies executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver to stop Moore's vehicle. The maneuver caused Moore to lose control, cross the median, overturn, and collide with another vehicle on Veterans Parkway. Moore attempted to escape on foot but was arrested at the scene. Both Moore and Williams were injured and transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital. Williams was pronounced dead at 4:01 PM on March 8, 2024.

REASON FOR CHASE:
A Kane County sheriff's deputy attempted to pursue Salazar after he passed the deputy on Route 64 at a high rate of speed.

NARRATIVE:
On 03/05/2024, 36-year-old Marcos Salazar was killed when his Dodge Durango crashed into a tree and caught fire in the 50W700 block of Ramm Road near Maple Park during a pursuit by a Kane County sheriff's deputy.

At approximately 10:24 p.m., Salazar passed a deputy who was stationed on Route 64 near I.C. Trail Road at a high rate of speed. The deputy activated emergency lights and pursued him. Salazar continued at high speed, reaching approximately 110 mph. The deputy lost sight of him after Salazar turned north onto County Line Road. The deputy subsequently located the crashed Durango on Ramm Road, where it had struck a tree and caught fire. The deputy attempted to extinguish the fire and notified dispatch. Salazar was pronounced dead, and the Kane County Coroner determined that he died from multiple injuries caused by the crash.

The Kane County State's Attorney later reviewed the pursuit and concluded that the deputy had followed department policy and Illinois law. No criminal charges were filed against the deputy.

On March 6, 2024, at approximately 1:00 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to a hit-and-run incident on westbound Interstate 80 east of Penryn. The man, later identified as 31-year-old Samuel Lee Cook, fled the scene in a Toyota pickup truck. Officers located Cook's vehicle parked on the right shoulder of I-80, just west of Penryn Road. As officers approached, Cook exited his vehicle and ran into oncoming traffic, where he was struck and killed by a big rig. The driver of the big rig remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. It is unclear why Cook ran into traffic, and investigations are ongoing to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.

On March 4, 2024, at approximately 12:10 a.m., Sonoma County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a man brandishing a firearm outside La Hacienda del Toro, a nightclub on Stony Point Road in Santa Rosa. Upon arrival, deputies encountered 53-year-old Jose Luis Villasenor Cervantes, who was armed with an AK-47-style rifle. Cervantes opened fire on the deputies, initiating a pursuit during which he repeatedly stopped to shoot at law enforcement before fleeing again. The chase concluded when Cervantes crashed his vehicle into a fence on the 3200 block of Stony Point Road. Following the collision, deputies found Cervantes deceased. The Sonoma County Coroner's Office later determined that Cervantes died from blunt force trauma sustained in the crash.

During the incident, four deputies sustained injuries. Deputy Nicholas Dellia suffered critical head injuries and burns after being accidentally struck by a fellow deputy's vehicle while deploying spike strips. He was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The other three deputies sustained injuries to their hands and legs; two were treated and released, while the third remained hospitalized.

On March 1, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., officers from the Urbandale Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle for possible involvement in a prior shooting incident near 86th Street in Urbandale, Iowa. The driver of the vehicle did not stop. Urbandale Police escalated a high-speed pursuit along residential and commercial streets, reaching high speeds.

During the pursuit, it was reported that a passenger, identified as 22-year-old Jeffrey Lionel Smith, Jr., allegedly fired a gun from the fleeing vehicle. The pursuit ended near the 6000 block of 86th Street when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole, disabling it.

Officers claimed to have observed Smith exit the vehicle with a gun. According to police accounts, officers opened fire, striking Smith. He was pronounced dead at the location.

The Urbandale Police Department has stated that body camera footage captured the encounter. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is conducting an independent investigation, and findings will be reviewed by the Polk County Attorney’s Office.

On March 1, 2024, at approximately 1:30 a.m., officers from the California State University, Chico Police Department attempted to stop a Ford Mustang for erratic driving near Big Chico Creek on Warner Street. The driver failed to yield, leading officers on a high-speed pursuit. The chase culminated when the Mustang crashed into a residence in the 900 block of The Esplanade, near East Sacramento Avenue, across from Chico High School. The collision caused the vehicle's gas tank to rupture, igniting a fire that quickly engulfed both the car and the house. Barbara Diane Ayers-Ferris, 87, was inside the home at the time and died in the blaze. Her husband was rescued and transported to a local hospital; his condition remains undisclosed. Two female passengers in the Mustang were also rescued and hospitalized with unspecified injuries. T
