On January 27, 2024, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Bellwood police responded to a report of shots fired in the 200 block of 32nd Avenue. Officers discovered a man who had been shot and later died at the hospital. During the investigation, officers observed a vehicle fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. The pursuit was initiated, and the vehicle continued to travel at excessive speeds through Forest Park. The chase ended when the vehicle crashed into a tree at the intersection of Randolph and Des Plaines Avenue, bursting into flames. Two individuals inside the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

At least 2 CBP units chased the vehicle. The agents admitted that they turned off their lights and sirens due to bad weather. The logic of this explanation is not clear. On January 24, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers from the Sioux City Police Department observed a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed near Gordon Drive and Spalding Street. The vehicle, a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by 40-year-old Melissa Thede of Churdan, Iowa, did not stop when officers attempted a traffic stop.

Officers escalated a high-speed pursuit to speeds in excess of 100 mph. The pursuit continued into a more congested area, prompting supervisors to direct officers to stop the chase.

Immediately after the pursuit ended, Thede’s vehicle, still speeding from the chase, collided with another car at the intersection of Gordon Drive and Spalding Street. Her vehicle overturned upon impact and came to rest in the roadway. Emergency responders transported her to MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
