On 11/20/2023, 32-year-old Isauro Zamora was killed when the Chevrolet Silverado he was driving crashed during a Harris County Sheriff’s Office pursuit in north Houston.

At approximately 8:19 p.m., Harris County sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop Zamora near Little York and Hardy roads. Authorities did not disclose the reason for the attempted traffic stop. Police said Zamora did not stop and continued southbound on Hardy Road. Two sheriff’s vehicles pursued him.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Zamora initially slowed to approximately 10 mph before accelerating to 40 mph and eventually reaching speeds of approximately 80 mph. The pursuit continued southbound on Hardy Road for approximately six miles and eight minutes.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., Zamora drove off the roadway onto a grassy area near Hardy Street and the North Loop / I-610 and crashed into pillars supporting freeway signs. He was the sole occupant of the pickup and was pronounced dead at the scene. HCSO said he was not wearing a seat belt.

HCSO said the Chevrolet did not appear to have been stolen. The agency said the two deputies maintained distance behind the vehicle and communicated speeds and intersections during the pursuit. The reason deputies initially attempted to stop Zamora was not disclosed in the available reporting.

At a McDonald’s at drive-through, 4 police cars surrounded a black vehicle that was in the line and was swarmed by police while waiting for a food order. A police vehicle reportedly deliberately ran into the black vehicles and performed a PIT maneuver. The vehicle fled at high speed with a very aggressive police chase after it.

An eyewitness described that it sounded like a bomb going off when the vehicle crashed into a white Mercedes at such high speeds due to the chase that one of the vehicles split in half. Four people in the Mercedes including 2 children were taken away, reportedly injured and in unknown condition. The engine of the Mercedes was found outside of the car 30 feet away.

One person was declared dead at the scene. Four others were injured with some having to be cut out of the vehicles. A crushed bicycle was seen at the scene with a bicyclist becoming the fifth injured person also hit by the police chase and being transported to the hospital in unknown condition.

Noah Jenkins was allegedly speeding and Meridian PD escalated a chase, worsening the speed to above 100 mph. This dangerous chase continued on streets until Noah Jenkins crashed near Highway 39 and died. On 11/17/2023, an unidentified man was killed when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a commercial building during a Toledo Police Department pursuit in East Toledo. Toledo Police records identify the pursuit as 2023PUR-9013.

A Toledo Police Gang Unit observed the vehicle traveling without a visible license plate. Police said the driver turned from Artis Street onto Earl Street and cut off another vehicle. Officers activated their emergency lights and siren to conduct a traffic stop. The driver stopped on Oak Street and began getting out of the vehicle. Officers ordered him back inside. He complied, then drove away at high speed, and officers pursued him northbound on Oak Street.

Police said the driver ran a red light at Oak Street and Woodville Road and nearly struck an eastbound vehicle on Woodville Road. He swerved, lost control, and the vehicle began fishtailing before leaving the roadway and crashing into a commercial building at 515 Oak Street. The vehicle spun across the roadway and began catching fire.

An adult woman and two children, ages 2 and 4, were also inside the vehicle. Officers removed the occupants as the vehicle began to burn. The driver was unconscious and critically injured. He was transported to St. Vincent Medical Center, where he died approximately 30 minutes later. The woman and 4-year-old suffered minor injuries, while the 2-year-old was uninjured.

The pursuit began at approximately 11:22 p.m., traveled about one-half mile and lasted less than one minute. Contemporary 13abc reporting confirmed that Toledo Police attempted to stop the driver on Oak Street, that he drove away and crashed into a hardware store, and that he died after being transported to the hospital. Chavon Mackey, 32, was a father of 3 with a fourth child on the way who was killed by a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Corrections Officer Cassius Edwards who was driving while intoxicated and speeding when he collided with Mackey’s car. Thomasville PD saw a man who had open drug warrants and escalated a high-speed chase through town which ended when the man crashed and killed bystander Jennifer Ferrell who was a third-party motorist waiting at a stop sign. Ms. Farrell had been a beloved wife and mother and one-time local Wendy's worker.

NARRATIVE: On 11/08/2023, Brandon Walker of Lexington was killed when his 2005 Pontiac Sunfire crashed into an apartment building during a North Carolina State Highway Patrol pursuit in Winston-Salem. At approximately 9:30 a.m., a state trooper attempted to stop the Pontiac for displaying a fictitious registration plate. The driver fled and the trooper pursued. At the curve at Cole Road and Utah Drive, the Pontiac left the roadway and crashed into an apartment building. Walker was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger was transported to Baptist Medical Center with serious injuries. The apartment was unoccupied.

Scott County deputies hunted a car at high speed until it crashed into an Indiana State Police vehicle. REASON FOR CHASE: Suspected human smuggling.

NARRATIVE: On 11/08/2023, 17-year-old Luiz Alfredo Mencias-Escobar, a Honduran national who was living in Houston, was killed during a Zavala County Sheriff’s Office pursuit on U.S. Highway 57 near Batesville in Zavala County. Mencias-Escobar was driving a 2009 Honda Civic carrying five passengers. Authorities said the vehicle was suspected of being used for human smuggling.

At approximately 6:30 a.m., Mencias-Escobar was fleeing Zavala County sheriff’s deputies eastbound on U.S. 57 when, according to Texas DPS, he attempted to pass an 18-wheeler in a no-passing zone. The Honda entered the opposing lane and collided head-on with a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox.

All six occupants of the Honda were killed. The two occupants of the Equinox, 67-year-old Jose Lerma and 65-year-old Isabel Lerma of Dalton, Georgia, were also killed, bringing the total death toll to eight. The Equinox caught fire following the collision.

Texas DPS investigated the crash. Reporting also indicates DPS Highway Patrol assisted in the pursuit, while Homeland Security Investigations investigated the alleged human-smuggling operation.
