On March 29, 2024, Robert Sayen was killed in a collision with a Mobile Police Department (MPD) patrol car, driven by Officer Paul Callegari Jr. Eyewitnesses called 911, stating that the officer had hit and killed the motorcyclist and had fled the scene. Four separate eyewitnesses corroborated the 911 call, reporting the officer fleeing after the fatal crash. Surveillance video of the incident is available.

An investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) found that Officer Callegari was speeding through the intersection at 56 mph at the time of the crash. ALEA confirmed that there was no emergency or justification for the speed. However, ALEA's report did not include any mention of the officer fleeing the scene. MPD has not taken any disciplinary action against Officer Callegari beyond reassigning him to administrative duty.

Officer Callegari is also under investigation for the beating of motorist Beezer DuBose Jr., whom he had pulled from his vehicle during an unrelated incident.

Tuscaloosa PD responded to a mental health welfare check on Evet Tower, who was allegedly acting erratically and was reported to have attacked her daughter with a kitchen knife. Tuscaloosa County deputies were conversing with her when she allegedly retrieved a knife and charged at her daughter. One of the officers shot and killed her. Body cam footage, which was not released, reportedly captured the incident and showed the attack. The family had been involved in discussions about her mental health before the incident. The officer was placed on administrative leave while the Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) conducted the investigation. The grand jury determined no charges would be filed, siding with no criminal wrongdoing..

On March 6, 2024, Dothan Police responded to a report of a shooting at a home on Bunche Street, where 62-year-old Reinetta Ann Lewis was found dead in the front yard from multiple gunshot wounds. Her ex-husband, Ansel Lewis, was believed to have committed the shooting. Police quickly set up a perimeter around the house, placing nearby Dothan High School on lockdown. Crisis negotiators attempted to make contact with Ansel Lewis, but after no communication, the Special Response Team (SRT) entered the residence. A robot, used to inspect the area, revealed that Ansel Lewis was found dead inside, having died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident was identified as a murder-suicide with domestic motivations, as the victim had filed a protection order against Ansel Lewis just a day before the shooting. Reinetta had recently finalized her divorce from Lewis, and court records revealed he had a history of violent behavior​.

Huntsville Police responded to a warrant for Austin Flores, who was wanted for failing to comply with sex offender registration due to a child pornography conviction. When officers attempted to arrest him at the Studio 6 Extended Stay hotel, Flores allegedly drew a firearm, leading officers to shoot him. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. No officers were injured. The Texas Rangers have been informed and are overseeing the investigation.

On February 23, 2024, at approximately 11:10 a.m., officers with the Rome Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Hi-Tech convenience store located at 401 South Broad Street. Surveillance footage showed that Kelvin Gerard Jackson, 34, entered the store, threatened the clerk with a gun, and demanded money. Shortly after officers arrived at the scene, Jackson fled on foot. Police chased him on foot up McGhee Street. During the pursuit, an officer confronted Jackson and shot and killed him. It is not known what this confrontation included. Police alleged that they found a gun, but no allegations have been made that Jackson attempted to use it. He died at the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken over the investigation​.

Walker County deputies attempted to stop Anthony R. Miles on his motorcycle. During the pursuit, Miles lost control of his motorcycle and was thrown off, sustaining fatal injuries. After the crash, the motorcycle was struck by a deputy's vehicle. Miles was pronounced dead at the scene. The reason for the initial pursuit remains unclear.

Lipscomb Police attempted a traffic stop on a speeding Dodge Challenger on February 16, 2024. The driver fled, and police escalated a chase. Police soon "called off the chase," but the vehicle crashed into a tree and overturned at the intersection of 6th Avenue North and 5th Street North. Unfortunately, the specific time or location when the chase was called off, as well as the exact distance between the point where the pursuit ended and the crash site, has not been released by police sources​.

Hajsun Jermale Hudson Jr., who was a passenger in the vehicle, was critically injured in the crash. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was later declared dead after being removed from life support. A second juvenile passenger was critically injured but survived, while another juvenile passenger sustained no injuries. The investigation into the crash is being handled by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Boyd D. Phillips, 47, attempted to rob a credit union in Ozark on February 5, 2024. After the failed robbery, he was tracked by police, leading to a vehicle pursuit. Phillips eventually fled into a residence on Hub Street and barricaded himself inside. ALEA SWAT, alongside local law enforcement, responded to the scene. During the standoff, officers fired shots, striking Phillips, who was later pronounced dead. No officers were injured during the incident. The investigation into the event is being handled by the Dale County District Attorney’s Office.

Edward Ahrens, a convicted sex offender, had abducted an 11-year-old girl in Knoxville, Tennessee, and fled with her to Catoosa County, Georgia. On February 2, 2024, law enforcement officers in Georgia surrounded Ahrens' vehicle. During the confrontation, Ahrens rammed his car into multiple officers, which led four officers to open fire, fatally wounding him. The 11-year-old girl, who was with him at the time, was not physically injured in the incident. Ahrens had been on the Georgia sex offender registry and had previously been convicted of child exploitation charges.

A vehicle was seen swerving on the road and numerous officers took up chase. The chase continued until the man stopped. Police allege that they were called to a home, did not elaborate on the reasons, did admit that they created a 3-hour standoff, apparently involving numerous LEOs and that at the end, they shot and killed Joseph Tyler Goodson. It is not known what prompted what sounds like a SWAT standoff, whether he was armed or what happened. Goodson was arrested once before for domestic violence and again for killing his brother’s dog. Mobile PC served search warrant for drugs and entered a home. Randall Adjessom was inside. Police allege he pointed a gun. Mobile PD shot and killed the teenager in his home. Henry County deputies followed a vehicle they felt to be stolen and escalated a 50-mile chase that ended in the median of US 431 in Headland when the person crashed. Police then shot and killed Cameron Eaton. There are many unanswered questions including why police chased him. Police went to some lengths to detail the man’s past felony record but did not disclose why police engaged in a very dangerous and very lengthy police chase. Police allege they found “illegal drugs” in the car but did not explain why they chased, shot him and searched his vehicle.

Lee County deputies were called because the town mayor of Smiths Corner, AL and pastor Bubba Copeland was in mental health crisis. Police chased them for a “welfare check” until they became very despondent during the chase, pulled out a gun and committed suicide under police duress.

Bubba Copeland a.k.a. online as Brittini Blaire Summerlin, had been the local popular mayor, married with 3 children who left behind many people who spoke very fondly of them. They ran several social media accounts in which they called themselves a “transitioning transgender curvy girl” and encouraged transitioning. Copeland posted many photos in drag and wrote fantasy novels around transgender topics. This was discovered by an ultra-conservative media publication and they were brutally outed in the media. They made public announcements, explaining the harmless nature of their social media activity but they were under immense pressure from their local ultra-conservative Alabama environment. On November 3, 2023, they were reportedly in a mental health crisis and driving in Smiths Corner when police started a chase and they committed suicide “in custody” during the chase.

On October 16, 2023, Cullman County deputies hunted a vehicle into Jefferson County for undisclosed reasons. Police allege that there was a shootout between them and the fleeing vehicle. Police kept up the chase until the vehicle crashed in the Kimberly/Morris area. Police state that a “suspect” is dead without explaining what this person described with this criminalizing word is allegedly guilty of, also only vaguely admitting his death without clarifying whether they shot or hunted them to death or if this was a suicide under police duress.

Police hunted Joshua Simmons for unknown reasons at nearly 1 a.m. until he crashed head-on into a 16-year-old uninvolved driver. Simmons died and the teen driver was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

Two Mobile PD officers were sent to a vacant home because a man was walking on the roof. Police talked him off the roof and allege that he suddenly pulled a shotgun with a pistol grip. They shot and killed him. It is highly unlikely that BWC will be released because Alabama has virtually abolished open records laws and transparency in 9/2022.

Bystanders commented that cops escalated "too quickly."

His mother had petitioned the court several days before his death to have him sent to an inpatient mental health program due to bizarre behavior and a known history of schizophrenia but did not get help in time.

Initially, DPD said and ALEA had parroted the statements that Perkins had pointed ‘a handgun which was also equipped with a light’ at officers. It is not confirmed or denied whether this claim still stands or not. Police Chief Perkins said that “inaccurate information” was shared in the initial rush to release information to the public. The story began with Decatur PD making the above claims, echoed by ALEA, then backpedaled again by Decatur PD.

Decatur PD had initially claimed that their officers had ordered Perkins to "drop the weapon." Decatur PD now admit they omitted the "drop the weapon" part. They still maintain that their officers yelled "drop to the ground" before firing or perhaps after firing? The stories are very vague and the PD has admitted having made very serious false and game-changing statements. The full statement by Decatur PD is linked as top link below.

The murder of Stephen Clay Perkins is mired in controversy, coverup and a contested police narrative. Enclosed are both versions, first the official police narrative explaining what led them to kill Stephen Clay Perkins, followed by eyewitness/neighbor and family statements, also statements by family attorneys and ongoing updates on this case.

POLICE NARRATIVE OF EVENTS:
A tow truck operator was tasked to repossess a vehicle and claims that the owner pulled a gun on them. Towing called Decatur PD who arrived at the home on Ryan Drive and Poole Valley Road together with the tow truck operator. Police allege that the man again pulled a gun. Decatur PD shot and killed him during an erroneous vehicle repo without giving him the ability to respond and without investigating and finding their gross errors (wrong address) before shooting to kill.

EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT:
Neighbor Justin Shepherd told media that police bullets hit his house and narrowly missed him while he was sleeping in his bed. He added that he had been a war veteran from the Iraq war but had never feared for his life as much as he did that night at home in Decatur, AL when police executed his neighbor and sprayed his home with bullets. COMMUNITY ACTION:
Since the murder of Stephen Clay Perkins, numerous protests have been organized in Decatur, AL. Calls for the firing and arrest of the shooter officer as well as calls for the mayor to step down echoed throughout Decatur. Attorney Lee Merritt uses #itsonus to post on the Perkins case.

On 10/10/2023, Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling, under public pressure to resign, announced he would not resign but compromised and announced he would not seek re-election for a third term, citing the Stephen Clay Perkins case as reason.

PERSONAL STATEMENT FROM FAMILY ATTORNEY LEE MERRITT on October 4, 2023:
"THEY AMBUSHED HIM! Steve Perkins went to his front yard to investigate why the dog was barking in the early morning hours of Friday September 29, 2023.

What he didn’t know was that a tow truck driver had conspired with several officers to quietly surround his property. This was, in fact, why his dog was barking.

In a matter of seconds, the men hidden in the dark surrounding his property revealed themselves and simultaneously opened fire. He never had a chance to surrender. Officers didn’t announce their presence until the very last moment. Steve was committing no crime. Officers surrounding Steven in his front yard fired over a dozen rounds striking him seven times— killing him. They later discovered the attempted repossession was a mistake.

Our office has been retained to represent the Perkins family. We will join members of the community tomorrow in Decatur, Alabama for a vigil.

FAMILY/LAWYER STATEMENT OF EVENTS:
The family strongly denies police allegations and the family’s lawyer released the following statement: “As the Publicist of the Perkins family, this memorandum serves as a statement on the tragic murder of Stephen (Steve) Clay Perkins. It is heartbreaking for Clay Perkin’s wife, children, and family to go through this traumatizing loss without much detail or explanation. The most respectful way for the City of Decatur, Alabama and Decatur Alabama Police Department to respond to this tragedy is with proactivity, and ultimately, transparency when communicating with the family and the Decatur City Community.
It has been rumored that an investigation is taking place, but the City of Decatur has failed to contact the family or acknowledge the incident pertaining to Clay’s death with the family. The family has not received footage of Clay’s deadly encounter from the City of Decatur’s police department or Alabama Law Enforcement Department. Moreover, neither agencies have taken the moment to acknowledge Clay’s death with the family.

Clay’s family and community is owed that closure immediately. It saddens us the City of Decatur failed to offer condolences, pay respect, or notify Mrs. Catrela Perkins (Clay’s Wife) or the family of Clay Perkins upon Decatur Police Department use of excessive force and murder of Clay Perkins.
The city retains body cameras which should have been in use during the incident. The family is calling for the city to deliver the footage to the family. In the meantime, surveillance exists of the incident through home security cameras. The unjust excessive amount of force can be seen in the home surveillance footage.

Rumors have circulated regarding Decatur Police Department’s statement stigmatizing Clay as combative or aggressive, causing rage in marginalized communities across Alabama. This was not the character of Clay Perkins. Clay was a family-oriented young black man thriving for excellence.
While there are a lot of rumors circulating, the family has found financial receipts proving Clay’s monthly payments were processed through his financing company and no evidence of Clay’s vehicle being in an active status of repossession, therefore indicating, the Towing Company and City of Decatur Police Department wrongfully appeared at Clay’s home.

The family has also gained a clear understanding of the excessive amount of force used by Decatur Alabama Police Department with seven wounds to Clay’s body during this encounter with the wrong person and a neighbor home with about nine bullet entry marks located on his home.

In this memorandum, the family is demanding a thorough investigation of the encounter held at Clay’s home on the morning of 29 September 2023. We are calling actions of justice to be served. We are calling for the removal of officers who entered Clay’s home the morning of the event, removal of officers using excessive force, and answers of justice from the city. We do not call for administrative leave of officers involved also known as a “free vacation”.

The family has chosen not to go into detail with media at this time as the unexpected death of Clay has been overbearing and would not like to jeopardize legalities processes or procedures.
As of now, all appropriate measures to ensure justice is served are being taken by the family. While there is no monetary amount that will justify the unjust lost of Clay, we will stand firmly with prominent legal representation on our side until justice is served.

Huntsville PD claimed they found Sterling Kenyon Arnold with a gun and shot and killed him. No more information was made available.

An eyewitness stated that they saw him with a backpack on his back walk past, that he had nothing in his hands and that shortly thereafter, police shot him. The eyewitness did not see him holding any weapon just prior to being killed.

Protesters have been gathering in downtown Huntsville to demand release of the bodycam footage to no avail. Huntsville PD has never released any bodycams unless ordered by a court in recent years.

The officer has returned to duty and this seems to be an open and shut case. The officer who was unnamed was cleared.

Decatur PD attempted to conduct a traffic stop at 2:40 a.m. on a vehicle at 67 and Danville Road. The driver, 16-year-old Jaiden DeJarnett, did not stop. Police escalated a chase into Lawrence County. When reaching Jefferson Street with police still in pursuit, DeJarnett lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree and died during the chase.

Jordan Nicholas Griffin ran a red light in Dothan. A Dothan officer saw it and escalated a chase during which Griffin crashed and died.

For unknown reasons, Andrew Massey was standing naked outside of his father’s home on County Road 45 in Hartford, AL and shooting in the windows. Police arrived and when he came outside with a gun, they shot and killed him.

On August 4, in the 700 block of Academy Drive in Bessemer, Alabama, 49-year-old Larry Douglas Oden II reportedly fled from BPD officers conducting a property theft investigation. During the pursuit, Oden was injured with blunt force to his head at 6:52 p.m. Police refused to release any further information. A car crash does not appear to have occurred and it is unclear how Oden died from a head injury sustained during arrest. No eyewitness or video can be found verifying police claims about this death.

Police arrived at a home in the Sumiton area to talk to a man about a vehicle theft. He locked himself into the bathroom and called his family members and said goodbye, announcing he would not bear going back to prison. He then committed suicide under police duress during the standoff with police.

Gurley PD chased a vehicle for traffic violations. Gurley PD escalated a 50-mile chase until the Hollywood and Gurley PD were both in high pursuit of the alleged traffic violation until the fleeing vehicle crashed into the car of Matthew Deandre Norwood, killing him. He had been a third-party motorist. Norwood was a spiritual young man who left a family and church congregation devastated at his senseless death over a dangerous police hunt of a driver guilty only of a traffic code violation. Officer Whalen was indicated for manslaughter in 10/2024 for this death.

Odenville PD and Oxford PD were called to a domestic altercation between 2 men. Police shot and killed Gregory Dan Bratcher Jr.

Gregory Don Bratcher Jr., 45, was shot and killed by Odenville police during a response to a domestic disturbance at a residence near 15705 Highway 411. Police alleged that Bratcher, a decorated U.S. Army veteran with diagnosed PTSD, entered the woods armed after the dispute. He was shot by police under disputed circumstances and pronounced dead at the scene. His family contends he never pointed a weapon at anyone and did not hold his wife hostage. A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed. The Oxford Police Department and Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics are investigating.

Wetumpka PD arrived to a Marathon gas station following a “man with a gun” call. They found Jabarie Camron Bozeman who ran from them. Police shot and killed him. By all accounts, he was defensively running away, not charging officers when killed.
