On 12/26/2021, Buckeye Police responded to reports of gunfire near Verrado Way and Park Meadows Drive around 3 p.m. An officer arrived outside a residence and encountered Vincent Black engaged in a physical struggle with his father in the driveway area. The father was on the ground injured and bleeding while Black held a knife. The officer issued commands and then opened fire when Black continued holding the knife during the confrontation. Black died on the driveway outside the home. Investigators transferred the case to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, which later determined the shooting fell within state use of force law and filed no charges.

On 11/29/2021, Tucson Police Department Officer Ryan Remington, working a store security detail, confronted Richard Lee Richards after store staff reported a toolbox taken without payment. Richards moved through the parking area on a mobility scooter while holding a knife and continued toward a nearby store entrance as officers followed and issued commands. Remington approached from behind and fired nine rounds, striking Richards in the side and back, and Richards died at the scene.
