On 02/07/2021, Mesa police responded around 11:30 p.m. to an apartment complex after receiving information from a mental health crisis line regarding Keenan Sailer. Police reported that Sailer was making suicidal statements and that a baby and a toddler were inside the apartment with him. Officers remained on scene for approximately 45 minutes. After ending contact with the crisis line, Sailer exited the apartment while armed with a gun. Police said he did not comply with commands to disarm. Officers deployed less-lethal rounds and then opened fire, killing Sailer at the scene. The shooting was later reviewed and cleared by the county attorney.

On 02/06/2021, shortly after 11:30 a.m., a woman called 911 to report an armed man in her yard in Phoenix. While she was on the phone with dispatch, the man entered her home. The woman escaped through a window without injury. Responding officers surrounded the house and later observed Anthony Greco exit into the backyard while still armed. Officers ordered him to drop the gun. When he did not comply and reportedly raised the weapon, an officer opened fire and killed Greco at the scene. The shooting was later reviewed and cleared by the county attorney.

On February 1, 2021, 34-year-old Andrew Scott Kislek followed his estranged wife to the Tucson Veterans Affairs Medical Center and rammed her vehicle before firing several shots into it. He fled the scene and was later stopped by Tucson Police near West Ajo Way and South 6th Avenue. During the stop in the Circle K parking lot, a confrontation occurred, and Officer Alexis Lujan opened fire, killing Kislek. The case was investigated by the Tucson Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards and the Pima County Attorney’s Office.

On 01/30/2021, Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies were serving arrest warrants at a resort property along North Scottsdale Road in Paradise Valley. Authorities reported that two individuals were taken into custody, while Kenneth Michael Dallas remained inside a room and did not exit. Deputies requested assistance from a SWAT team. According to police, Dallas was armed and remained barricaded when the SWAT team arrived. During the encounter, deputies reported that Dallas threatened officers with a firearm, and the SWAT team opened fire. Dallas was pronounced dead at the scene. The county attorney later reviewed the case and cleared the deputies of wrongdoing.

On 01/20/2021, Pima County sheriff’s deputies responded around 3:30 a.m. to reports of a man attempting to break into vehicles in the north Tucson area. Deputies later identified Bradley Alexander Lewis in connection with the report. Just before 7 a.m., deputies located a vehicle matching the description and attempted a traffic stop near N Paseo De Angel and W Pasitano. Police said the vehicle continued to a nearby residence, where it collided with a patrol vehicle. During the encounter that followed, deputies opened fire and shot Lewis. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting was reviewed by the county attorney’s office, which ruled the use of force justified. No criminal charges against deputies were announced.

On 01/17/2021, Avondale police attempted to take Daniel Canales Jr. into custody near 9890 Estrella Parkway in Goodyear. Police said officers were following a vehicle they believed had been stolen and tracked it to a Walgreens near Estrella Mountain Ranch. When officers attempted to arrest Canales Jr., a confrontation occurred. Officers opened fire and shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office later cleared the officers of wrongdoing.

On 01/15/2021, Yavapai County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on Hawthorne Lane in Prescott Valley. Authorities stated a 65 year old man had fired multiple shots toward a nearby home. Deputies reported the man was experiencing significant emotional distress related to family issues. Neighbors in the area were evacuated as deputies established a perimeter. Police said the man was hiding inside a shed on the property and was holding a firearm. According to law enforcement accounts, the man threatened deputies and fired shots from the shed during the standoff. Shortly before midnight, additional gunfire occurred, and a deputy fired a fatal shot. No charges against deputies were announced.

On 01/12/2021 just after midnight, Phoenix police officers attempted a traffic stop near Interstate 10 and Baseline Road. Police said the vehicle did not stop and was later located with assistance from a police helicopter near the Arizona Grand Resort area. Antonio Carbajal exited the vehicle and continued running. Officers caught up with him near Arizona Grand Parkway. Police stated that Carbajal had a handgun and that a physical struggle occurred over the weapon. During the encounter, an officer opened fire, shooting and killing Carbajal. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office later reviewed the case and cleared the officer of criminal wrongdoing.

On 01/09/2021, Phoenix police responded to reports of a disturbance in a parking lot near West Van Buren Street involving Paul Bolden and a woman. According to police accounts, during the incident Bolden took an infant from the woman and entered Van Buren Street. Police said Bolden stopped a vehicle in traffic and remained near the driver’s seat while holding the child. Officers arrived and attempted to get Bolden to put down a firearm. Police reported that shots were fired during the encounter, and officers opened fire, striking Bolden. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The infant was not physically injured. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office later reviewed the case and declined to file charges against the officers involved.

On 01/04/2021, shortly after 3 a.m., Payson police officers responded to multiple calls reporting a man behaving erratically near the Town of Payson Community Development building and later near the Bison Cove Apartments. Callers reported the man was talking to himself and was seen near or inside a parked vehicle that did not belong to him. Officers located Michael Romo near the vehicle and attempted to detain him. Police said Romo did not comply with commands to get on the ground. According to police statements, Romo moved toward officers while holding a knife. Officers opened fire, shooting and killing him.

On 01/02/2021, a Chandler police officer attempted to stop Anthony Bernal Cano while he was riding a bicycle through Gazelle Meadows Park. Police said Cano did not stop and the officer followed him through the park. After Cano got off his bicycle, the officer exited his vehicle and pursued him on foot. According to police, during the encounter Cano displayed a firearm and the officer opened fire, shooting him. Cano was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office later cleared the officer of criminal wrongdoing. Cano’s family filed a civil lawsuit, and the city of Chandler later agreed to a settlement exceeding one million dollars.
