On May 2, 2024, Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a request from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) at a residence in the 400 block of South Gramercy Place. DMH personnel were attempting to place 40-year-old Yong Yang on a 72-hour mental evaluation hold due to erratic and threatening behavior reported by his parents. Yang, diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder, allegedly attempted to assault a DMH employee. Upon arrival, officers made multiple attempts to communicate with Yang, who refused to exit the residence. On 05/01/2024, a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) patrol car traveling northbound on Gower Street attempted to cross Santa Monica Boulevard against a red light. The patrol car collided with a westbound vehicle, spinning the patrol car into a pedestrian crossing at a marked crosswalk. On April 26, 2024, at approximately 8:35 p.m., Long Beach Police responded to a report of a home invasion in progress at a residence on the 6800 block of Cerritos Avenue. Upon arrival, they encountered 17-year-old Brandon Ramon Salgado of San Bernardino in the yard of the home. Salgado was armed with what appeared to be a firearm, which was later determined to be a replica. Officers attempted to negotiate with him for over an hour. Salgado did not comply. A SWAT team was preparing to deploy when Salgado was shot by police. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police discovered that he had a plastic replica gun and had been unarmed.

On April 25, 2024, at approximately 10:31 a.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting that a 75-year-old woman had been shot multiple times in front of her garage on the 2400 block of Fern Street in Eureka. The shooter, identified as 32-year-old Kevin Jeffrey Burks, allegedly approached the victim and her sister, opened fire, and then fled westbound on Fern Street toward Walnut Avenue. Deputies arrived at the scene around 10:38 a.m. and spotted Burks walking on Fern Street. When deputies attempted to detain him at gunpoint, Burks fled into a nearby residence. At approximately 10:40 a.m. Burks exited the residence and advanced toward the deputies while pointing a firearm in their direction. Lieutenant Conan Moore discharged his firearm, striking Burks in the chest. Burks was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on May 3, 2024. The elderly victim was also hospitalized and later released to a rehabilitation facility. The incident is under investigation by the Humboldt County Critical Incident Response Team.

On April 25, 2024, at approximately 3:40 p.m., Anaheim Police Department officers responded to a shooting at the Tyrol Plaza Senior Apartments on State College Boulevard. The victim, 59-year-old Ana Monterrosa, the apartment complex manager, was fatally shot multiple times by 67-year-old resident Brian Lawrence in the leasing office. After the shooting, Lawrence barricaded himself inside his third-floor apartment. In response, the APD deployed its SWAT team, evacuated surrounding residents, and initiated a standoff.

Negotiators attempted to communicate with Lawrence, but after approximately six hours, at 9:30 p.m., SWAT members breached the apartment and discovered Lawrence dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident was classified as a murder-suicide, with the motive still under investigation.

On April 24, 2024, at approximately 6:10 a.m., LAPD officers initiated a pursuit of a gold Chevrolet Suburban driven by 23-year-old Germaine Smith, suspected of burglary. The chase proceeded through South Los Angeles streets until Smith's vehicle struck bicyclist Jose David Monsalve Rojas at the intersection of Hooper Avenue and 46th Street. Upon arrival, six individuals, including the victim, were safely evacuated. The man locked himself inside the residence. Deputies engaged in approximately an hour of negotiations, which ceased when the man ignited a fire within the home. Deputies attempted to rescue him by breaking windows but were unsuccessful. Firefighters arrived and extracted the unconscious man, who was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead. The domestic violence victim sustained minor injuries.

Upon arrival, officers identified 46-year-old Donald Washington, who matched the description, sitting on a park bench. Officers exited their vehicle with weapons drawn and issued multiple commands for Washington to remove his hands from his pockets and to drop the firearm. Washington did not comply and began to back away, repeatedly asking, "Why?" As officers continued to instruct him to drop the gun, Washington pulled a firearm from his jacket pocket. An officer then discharged their weapon, striking Washington. After falling to the ground, Washington appeared to raise the gun again, prompting the officer to fire additional rounds. Officers rendered medical aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and transported Washington to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A loaded firearm was recovered at the scene. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident. On April 17, 2024, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department, investigating the March 3 homicide of 34-year-old Rama Alsarraj, requested assistance from the Oakland Police Department to apprehend suspect Dominique Broadt, 32, at a residence on the 1000 block of 16th Street in Oakland. As officers secured the area, Broadt emerged from the residence holding a firearm. Murrieta Police located the stolen Toyota Camry and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled southbound on Interstate 15, initiating a high-speed pursuit. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) deployed spike strips near Gopher Canyon Road, deflating the vehicle's front tires. Despite this, the vehicle continued driving until crashing near the Deer Springs Road exit in Escondido. On April 12, 2024, at approximately 11:05 p.m., Deputy Alex Zanini of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a white pickup truck near Merrell Road and Harper Road in Groveland for an unreadable license plate and a malfunctioning brake light. The vehicle was occupied by two individuals, including 42-year-old Shawn Karr of Coulterville.

During the stop, the driver provided an alias and lacked a valid driver’s license. Deputy Zanini detained the driver in his patrol car after finding suspected methamphetamine on him. Deputy Zanini then informed Karr that he would be detained for officer safety during a search of the truck. Karr exited the vehicle, fled on foot, and was pursued by Deputy Zanini. A physical struggle ensued, during which Karr allegedly produced a firearm and threatened the deputy.

Fearing for his safety, Deputy Zanini discharged his weapon, fatally striking Karr. Two loaded firearms and approximately 13 grams of methamphetamine were recovered from Karr.
