On February 22, 2023 around 7:55 p.m., Rampart Division patrol officers responded to a radio call of an assault in the area of Silver Lake Boulevard and Temple Street where an unhoused Latinx woman named Mariela Cardenas was pointing a pellet gun at passersby. Police shot and killed her.
LAPD lists the three officers involved in the shooting: Miguel Salazar, Jacqueline McBride, and Preston Moseby, who are all assigned to Rampart Division.Jacqueline McBride is the daughter of the department’s police union boss, Jamie McBride.
McBride’s other daughter, Toni, was involved in a shooting that killed Daniel Hernandez, 38, in 2020.Her father Jamie McBride reportedly shot at least seven people in his career. The shooting of Cardenas was cleared by AG Bonta.

On Saturday night, Jan. 23, 2023, Huu Can Tran opened fire on the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park near Los Angeles, killing 10 people: 5 men and 5 women, all estimated to be over 50. The shooting injured 10 more who were taken to the hospital.
By Sunday morning, LASD had found the white van that belonged to 72-year old Huu Can Tran who was verified by authorities as the shooter. The vehicle was followed by police for several hours before it pulled into a parking lot.SWAT approached the vehicle and a single gunshot was heard. Police found the man dead from suicide under police duress.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department shot Christopher Dearman to death at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Parkway and Logan Avenue around 11:30 p.m. Friday after officers had attempted to pull over a red Dodge Ram truck for a lighting equipment failure but he sped away.Police allege that Dearman stopped 2 blocks later on Logan Avenue, got out of the truck with a handgun and fired "approximately two rounds" toward officers, hitting the SDPD patrol vehicle's hood.
San Diego PD fired back at Dearman, and as he fell to the ground, police then sent a K9 to drag him away in his injured state, stating that he had a gun near him and “did not comply.” It is unknown to what degree he was still able to comply as he died shortly thereafter when taken to the hospital.No officers were charged.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday, the San Diego PD received a report of a violent dispute at a pharmacy in the 5500 block of Reservoir Drive east of San Diego State University. After forcing entry, they found 66-year-old Mary Ellen Carter of Lakeside suffering from stab wounds to her upper body. She died shortly thereafter. Investigators identified Brower, a work colleague of Carter's assailant and then went to his home on La Cresta Boulevard, located him and they allege he may have reached for a shotgun. SDPD Officers Salvador Laurel-Torres and Robert Raynor opened fire with their service firearms, killing Brower. No officers were charged.
