On 12/27/2021, law enforcement identified Roberto Salgado Cazares as a person sought in a fatal shooting in Vista and attempted a vehicle stop later that night. He continued driving and police chased his vehicle across several cities for hours using spike strips and other measures before remotely disabling the truck near Mission Avenue and Gamble Street around 3 a.m.
After the vehicle stopped, Salgado exited and gunfire was exchanged between him and Escondido officers. Two officers opened fire, striking him multiple times.
