Christian Valdez exited the truck and moved away from the vehicle while the officer attempted to detain him. As the encounter continued, Valdez returned to the driver’s seat while officers attempted to arrest him at the open door. A second officer arrived during the struggle. The truck began moving forward while officers were still at the driver’s side. An officer fired multiple shots, striking Valdez. The truck continued forward, went through a chain link fence, and struck a residence. Valdez was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead. The San Bernardino County District Attorney later ruled the shooting justified.

On 09/20/2021, at approximately 12:55 p.m., Signal Hill Police Department officers responded to a report of a stabbing at a grocery store in the 1600 block of East Willow Street in Signal Hill, California. Upon arrival, officers found a man who had been stabbed in the upper torso. He was transported to a hospital in fair condition. Witnesses provided a description of the attacker, later identified as 42-year-old Phillip Lopez, who was reportedly fleeing westbound on Willow Street. An officer located Lopez and attempted to detain him.

The officer exited his vehicle to pursue on foot. Lopez produced a large knife and moved toward the officer. The officer opened fire, striking Lopez. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is assisting the Signal Hill Police Department in the investigation of the officer-involved shooting. The names of the involved officer(s) have not been disclosed.

On 09/17/2021, Escondido police said Jonathan Carroll had wounded a motorist in a reported car to car shooting. Police said they located Carroll driving and attempted a traffic stop. Carroll did not stop and police chased the vehicle until it crashed near Bear Valley Parkway and Encino Drive. Police stated Carroll got out of the vehicle holding a gun, and Officer Chandler Hoppal opened fire and killed him.

On 09/13/2021, a federal agent deputized as a U.S. Marshal attempted to serve federal and state arrest warrants on Michael Jonathan Cortez at a store on Fruitvale Avenue in Oakland, California. Police stated surveillance video showed the agent arrive with a weapon drawn and approach the storefront. Police stated the video does not capture what occurred inside. Police alleged the agent gave verbal commands at the door and that Cortez attempted to exit the store, making contact with the agent. Police alleged Cortez then produced a handgun. The agent opened fire and shot and killed Cortez.

On 09/09/2021, California Highway Patrol officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man walking in the roadway with a firearm on Mad River Road in Arcata, California. Police stated multiple officers located a man matching the description walking in the roadway. Police alleged the man raised a firearm toward officers. Officers opened fire and shot and killed Charles David Chivrell. Authorities later stated the person killed was not connected to a separate search being conducted by local law enforcement.

On 09/04/2021, Fresno police officers responded to reports of a man acting erratically at Peach Avenue and Butler Avenue in Fresno, California. Police stated that while responding, officers were informed the man matched the description of a person suspected in a prior shooting and kidnapping earlier that day. Police stated officers attempted to take Jorge Calleres into custody and that a struggle occurred. Police alleged Calleres appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Officers used Taser devices and handcuffs to restrain him. Police stated Calleres then went into medical distress and died shortly afterward.

On September 3, 2021, Cedric Baxter, 60, of Compton, California, was involved in a violent incident in Buena Park.Baxter was observed firing a handgun at a school bus near Orangethorpe Avenue and Western Avenue. The bus was occupied by his estranged wife, who was the driver, and a 6-year-old child. Neither the driver nor the child was injured. Police escalated a chase, during which he rammed the school bus multiple times with his SUV. The chase concluded at the Buena Park School District parking lot, where Baxter crashed into a parked vehicle. As officers approached, Baxter exited his vehicle with a firearm, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Baxter was pronounced dead at the scene. He had a history of domestic violence and was under a restraining order at the time of the incident.

On September 3, 2021, the Los Angeles Police Department officers, who were investigating human-trafficking suspects, attempted to pull over a Mercedes-Benz during undercover surveillance in Koreatown. The vehicle fled, and the chase ended at the intersection of Sixth Street and Wilton Avenue when the Mercedes collided with three other vehicles. The driver of a white Toyota truck, an innocent bystander, was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released.

On 08/29/2021, deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call reporting a disturbance involving Albert AJ Ruiz Perez in a residential garage in Victorville, California. Police stated he was armed with a gun and refused to leave the property. Police stated deputies located him inside the garage and that he would not engage with officers, leading to an extended standoff. Police stated that at one point Perez put the gun down and moved toward deputies, after which officers fired less-lethal weapons. Police alleged Perez then moved back toward the gun, at which point deputies opened fire and killed him.

On December 23, 2021, Valentina Orellano Peralta was shopping for clothes with her mother in a Burlington department store in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles when Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a call about a man attacking shoppers. As police fired at the suspect, one of the rounds apparently ricocheted off the floor and entered the fitting room where Valentina and her mother were hiding. She was struck by the bullet and died in her mother’s arms.
