State : California

Cause of Death : Vehicle

Event : Bystander killed by police chase crash

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/07/2025 around 10:15 a.m., Sacramento Police, collaborating with California Highway Patrol, chased someone for a parole violation at high speeds, locally reported as "high-speed" but exact MPH not specified, westbound on Florin Road. During the pursuit, the pursued vehicle skipped a red light and crashed into Nguyễn Huỳnh Hữu Đức’s Chrysler van before plowing into several other vehicles at the Greenhaven Drive intersection. Nguyễn Huỳnh Hữu Đức was a bystander whose vehicle was struck directly by the fleeing driver’s impact. He died at the crash site. Loved ones describe Nguyen as a 30-year-old Vietnamese immigrant who came to the U.S. four years ago, studied engineering, and supported himself through delivery work. The community viewed him as a hard-working individual with a bright future, pending a family reunion. His wife was preparing to join him soon. A memorial ceremony took place at the crash site, where family and friends, including Buddhist monks, gathered to honor him and pray for his soul. They left his favorite items at the scene and expressed that his life was tragically cut short while trying to help others. The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into both the pursuit and the crash. Sacramento Police stated they follow pursuit protocols but did not provide details on pursuit speed or risk mitigation timing. The community has questioned whether alternative tactics could have avoided this fatal outcome.

On the evening of 06/07/2025, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported robbery on Meadow View Circle in Lancaster. About 15 minutes later, officers encountered Eric Berrios, identified by his fiancé, as they tried to restrain him.
