The driver lost control on the off-ramp, causing the vehicle to become airborne and overturn multiple times. On April 26, 2025, a 38-year-old man led California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed pursuit from San Clemente to the San Ysidro Port of Entry. After officers attempted a traffic stop on the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado he was driving, the man fled southbound. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers attempted a second stop at the border. During the stop, the driver suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. The man's identity has not been released, and the motive behind the pursuit remains unclear.

On April 22, 2025, deputies from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop on a Lexus sedan near East 18th Street and Willow Avenue in Antioch. The driver, 50-year-old Victor Vigil of Pittsburg, did not stop. Deputies escalated a pursuit. Vigil drove southbound on Highway 160 and entered the northbound lanes. Deputies discontinued the pursuit, but Vigil continued driving. Shortly after, Vigil collided head-on with a Mercedes SUV at the Highway 4 and Highway 160 interchange. The crash also involved a Dodge Caliber and a Honda Civic. Vigil died at the scene. The driver of the Mercedes sustained major injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center. Two occupants of the Dodge were also hospitalized. The incident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol and the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office.

Geoffrey Shyam Stirling, who was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop in Newport Beach, California, on April 17, 2025, was the younger brother of Lydia McLaughlin. Lydia is known for her appearances on The Real Housewives of Orange County during seasons 8 and 12. She publicly mourned her brother's passing, describing it as an “unimaginable loss” and expressing that her family's hearts are shattered.
In addition to Lydia, Geoffrey is survived by his older brother, Jesse Stirling, who hosts the interview program Meetings with Remarkable People on Newfoundland Television (NTV). On April 14, 2025, San Diego police responded to a report of a man with a rifle partially concealed in his jacket near Sanger Place and Blanche Street in San Ysidro. The man, later identified as Enrique Cortez Jr., placed the rifle into a white Ford F-150 pickup truck, retrieved a handgun, and fired a shot into the ground during an argument with a bicyclist.
When officers arrived, Cortez entered the truck and drove away, leading police on a pursuit that lasted over 30 minutes, involving Interstate 5, Interstate 15, and surface streets. The chase concluded in the 800 block of 26th Street in the Golden Hill neighborhood, where Cortez's vehicle collided with a police K-9 unit, causing minor injuries to an officer.As officers attempted to box in the vehicle, Cortez revved the engine. In response, SDPD SWAT officers Sgt. Richard Curtis and Acting Sgt. Bryan Shields fired multiple rounds, striking Cortez. Officers removed him from the vehicle and initiated lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A rifle and a handgun were recovered from the truck.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is leading the investigation into the shooting, with oversight from the District Attorney's Office and the FBI.

They encountered 41-year-old Gregory Fitzgerald and a female companion near a vehicle with expired registration. Deputies observed what appeared to be a rifle in the vehicle, which the woman identified as a pellet gun.
