On January 14, 2025, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Octavio Hernandez allegedly broke into the Mokelumne River Fish Hatchery in Clements, California. The theft was discovered around 7:00 a.m. when employees arrived.California Highway Patrol officers located the stolen vehicle around 8:30 a.m. near Clements and pursued Hernandez into Calaveras County. A chase ensued, but officers lost sight of the vehicle due to Hernandez's erratic driving. Around 10:00 a.m., Hernandez attempted to carjack a homeowner on Buena Vista Court in Jenny Lind. The homeowner refused and contacted 911, prompting Hernandez to flee into the nearby Calaveras River Canyon, armed with the stolen firearms and wearing the bulletproof vest.

Overnight, deputies used a drone to deliver a cell phone and food to Hernandez, attempting to negotiate his surrender. Despite these efforts, Hernandez remained uncooperative. On January 15, 2025, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Hernandez fired at responding law enforcement officers. Police opened fire and killed him at the location.
