On July 20, 2024, at approximately 7:22 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies were flagged down by civilians in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven store in the 7600 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood. The civilians reported an attempted robbery by a man, later identified as 33-year-old Cody Dodd-Thompson, who was fleeing the scene on foot. Deputies followed Dodd-Thompson and attempted to detain him near the 1100 block of Gardner Street. Dodd-Thompson did not comply, produced a knife, and ran south on Gardner Street.
