On 05/24/2021, Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports that Vedo Hall had barricaded himself inside an apartment on Alabama Avenue SE while holding a woman there against her will. Police established a perimeter. Hall exited the apartment with the woman through a broken window. Officers later located Hall and the woman outside the building. Police reported that Hall held a long gun toward an officer, and an officer fired, shooting and killing Hall at the scene. No charges against officers were announced in public reporting, and no final prosecutorial outcome beyond the initial review was reported.

On 04/30/2021, Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a reported dispute at a residence on 4th Street SW. Officers spoke with Terrance Maurice Parker and a woman at the scene. According to police statements, Parker was holding a handgun during the encounter and directed it toward the woman and an officer. An officer then opened fire, killing Parker at the scene. Public reporting provides limited additional detail about the moments immediately before the shooting.

Alexandria PD escalated a chase of a vehicle that they felt was involved in nearby gunfire. The vehicle did not stop and drove northbound on Interstate 295. Police continued to chase the driver into Southeast Washington, D.C., where he exited the vehicle and jumped over a jersey barrier, falling approximately 23 feet onto Malcolm X Avenue. While still being chased, a U.S. Park Police officer deployed a stun gun, and Alexandria Police officers took him into custody. He was pronounced dead at the crash site.

On 04/02/2021, Noah R. Green drove a vehicle into a barricade at the U.S. Capitol complex, striking two U.S. Capitol Police officers. One officer, William Evans, died from his injuries, and another officer was hospitalized. After exiting the vehicle, Green was shot and killed by police outside the Capitol. The incident prompted an immediate security lockdown of the area and was investigated by federal authorities.

On 03/03/2021, an unidentified man died after falling from a building in Washington, D.C. while attempting to evade police during a pursuit. Police said officers were attempting to detain the man in connection with a reported sexual assault when he attempted to flee. During the pursuit, the man fell from an elevated location and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead after being transported for medical treatment. Authorities stated the incident was under investigation.

On 01/06/2021, Ashli Babbitt was inside the United States Capitol building during the breach of the Capitol. Video footage and law enforcement accounts show Babbitt attempting to climb through a broken window leading into the Speaker’s Lobby area near the House chamber. A U.S. Capitol Police officer fired a single shot, striking Babbitt. She was transported from the building and later pronounced dead. The shooting was reviewed by the U.S. Department of Justice and by internal Capitol Police investigations, both of which concluded the use of force was justified and no criminal charges would be filed. Babbitt’s family later filed a civil wrongful death lawsuit, which resulted in a settlement with the federal government.
