On 02/20/2022, Palm Beach Police Department officers responded to a residence after reports that 55-year-old Michael Anthony had threatened to kill his wife. Officers confronted him outside the home and police reported that he entered a vehicle and continued driving as officers responded. During the encounter, Anthony shot himself. He later died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities reported that no officers discharged their firearms. The death was investigated as a suicide that occurred during a police response.

On 02/15/2022, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a disturbance call at the Ellenton Premium Outlets at 5461 Factory Shops Boulevard. Deputies encountered 50-year-old Gregory Donnell Smalls in the parking lot area during the response. Authorities reported that Smalls was armed and that deputies discharged their firearms during the encounter, striking and killing him at the location. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Hillsborough County deputy Abigail Bieber was staying at a St. Augustine AirBnB when she was shot and killed by her domestic partner, Hillsborough County Detective Daniel Leyden who killed himself after killing her. Both had been officers at the same sheriff’s office in Florida. After the murder, a former girlfriend of Detective Leyden took to public media and disclosed that she had been a domestic violence victim at the hands of the same officer who had killed Bieber. This death is listed in this space because Officer Bieber was the victim of a shooting by an officer.

On 01/12/2022, off-duty Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Roelofs drove a pickup truck eastbound on the Courtney Campbell Causeway in Clearwater. Prosecutors allege Roelofs was driving under the influence and at excessive speed when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the median, and crashed head-on into another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The violent impact crushed the passenger compartment of the oncoming vehicle and killed 33-year-old Jessica Reisinger. Another victim in the struck vehicle was seriously injured.
Investigators reported Roelofs left the United States after the crash and traveled to Colombia. Authorities later arrested him and returned him to Florida to face charges. He is charged with DUI manslaughter and related offenses. In February 2026, jury selection began in his criminal trial. Prosecutors allege reckless driving, intoxication, and extreme speed caused the fatal collision. Defense attorneys dispute the degree of impairment and causation.

On December 26, 2021, 13-year-old Stanley "SJ" Davis III was reportedly seen operating a dirt bike on Boynton Beach Boulevard. Police attempted a traffic stop. Surveillance footage shows Davis refueling at a gas station and then being followed by a police vehicle. Police escalated a chase during which Davis lost control of the dirt bike on North Federal Highway, collided with a curb, and was thrown into a street sign. He died. The Florida Highway Patrol and Boynton Beach Police Department Internal Affairs unit were put in charge of the investigation.

On 12/26/2021, Titusville Police responded shortly after 7 p.m. to a 911 report of a woman being assaulted on the roadway in the 1500 block of Gayle Avenue. An officer arrived and approached James Lowery in the roadway and attempted to detain him. Lowery moved away on foot and a physical struggle occurred between him and the officer on the roadway. The officer fired his weapon and struck Lowery, killing him. Authorities later determined officers misidentified Lowery during the response. Internal review concluded the shooting violated policy and prosecutors charged the officer with manslaughter, resulting in a probation sentence.

On December 17, 2021, at approximately 4:00 a.m., a 14-year-old boy called the police to report that his mother's boyfriend had arrived at their apartment on Alpha Court in Lake Clarke Shores, Florida, armed with a gun. On December 7, 2021, at approximately 7:30 a.m., a concerned neighbor contacted the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, reporting that 88-year-old Ronald Ehrich had not been seen for two days. Deputies responded to his residence on Longcrest Drive. Deputy Anastacia Castillo, who had been with the department since 2015, entered the home to conduct a welfare check. As she ascended the stairs, she knocked on a bedroom door and announced her presence. When there was no response, she knocked again and heard a male voice indicating he was armed. Ehrich then opened the door and advanced toward Deputy Castillo with a firearm. Fearing for her life, Deputy Castillo discharged her service weapon, fatally wounding Ehrich. He was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital. Deputy Castillo had no prior history of using deadly force. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.

On November 18, 2021, 34-year-old Antonia Lee Crum was found deceased at the America's Best Value Inn in West Melbourne, Florida. Emmanuel Joe Ayala, 35, initially cooperated with investigators but later ceased communication. Authorities located Ayala in Palm Bay and obtained a search warrant for his residence. Upon arrival, Ayala armed himself and barricaded himself inside his home. After several hours of negotiation, Ayala died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. On November 28, 2021, at approximately 2:05 a.m., the Lakeland Police Department received a call about a suspicious vehicle parked in a construction zone on Interstate 4 near exit 31 at Kathleen Road. Officers Tammy Hathcock and Garrett Zeigler responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they observed a 61-year-old man sitting in the vehicle. As they approached and tapped on the window to speak with him, the man retrieved a handgun and pointed it toward Officer Hathcock. On 11/27/2021, Miami-Dade Police Department personnel drove an emergency vehicle along Southwest 87th Avenue while responding to a call and approached a group bicycle ride traveling through the area. Juan Carlos Martinez was riding with the group when the approaching vehicle caused movement among cyclists and he fell into the roadway. The police vehicle struck him and he died from his injuries. Reporting described Martinez as a participant in an organized ride and the crash became part of community debate over roadway safety and emergency vehicle practices. Deputies received a call around 7:40 p.m. concerning shots fired at 24030 Northeast 140th Avenue in Fort McCoy, Florida. Three deputies arrived and discovered a man dead in the driveway. A second man, armed with a shotgun, approached them. Deputies ordered the man to put down the weapon, but they said he did not comply and instead tried to engage them, prompting the deputies to open fire, killing him. James Levitz, 83, and Micah Brillhart, 33, were the two men killed, but police withheld information regarding which individual was killed by police.

On November 14, 2021, at approximately 9:35 p.m., Hollywood Police Department officers pursued 16-year-old Christopher Walls, who was possibly involved in a carjacking a black 2018 Alfa Romeo and fleeing in the vehicle. The chase ended when Walls crashed the car near Northwest 62nd Street and Northwest 27th Avenue in Miami, Florida. Witnesses to the arrest alleged that police used excessive force, stating that Walls was beaten during the encounter. After being handed over to Miami-Dade Police custody, Walls became unconscious and later died. Miami PD did not disclose the names of the officers who beat him to death.

Deputy Sean Speakman reportedly saw Jessiram Rivera in an obvious state of agitation while holding a shovel. The deputy ordered her to stop and put the shovel down and began backing away. Rivera did not comply, continuing to advance toward the deputy and threatening him with the shovel. Speakman then shot and killed Rivera.

Corey Stanley was wanted in connection with a home invasion and assault, accused of breaking into a couple's home and beating them with a rock. Officers arrived and found the person inside his vehicle. Police blocked the vehicle, at which point the person drew a handgun. An officer fired a single shot, missing him. After the shot was fired, the person pointed the gun at his head and shot and killed himself.

Around 7 p.m., deputies were searching for a homicide suspect when they began speaking with a man unrelated to the case. The man reached inside his waistband, prompting a scuffle between him and a deputy. During the struggle, the man retrieved a weapon and shot the deputy in the leg. Police responded around 2 a.m. to a 911 call about an armedman smoking crack. Two officers, with probable cause to arrest Allan Lorenzo Robb on a charge of grand theft auto, reportedly deployed less-lethal weapons without success before a third officer shot and killed him.

Joshua Dewayne Hammock allegedly robbed a convenience store in Lee County while displaying a knife around 11:20 p.m. Lee County deputies began searching for him in response to the theft. Around 7:30 a.m., another robbery took place at a 7/11, where Hammock allegedly stole a case of beer and flashed a knife before charging at the store clerk. When two responding deputies found him, Hammock allegedly tried to attack them with the knife, prompting one of the deputies to shoot and kill him.
