On January 9, 2024, at approximately noon, detectives from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) Tactical Apprehension & Confrontation (TAC) Unit arrived at a residence in the 1500 block of Jody Road, West Palm Beach, Florida, to serve an arrest warrant for armed carjacking. After entering the home, the man retreated to a bedroom, and shortly after, a gunshot was heard from behind the closed door. Following standard procedure, detectives called the on-duty SWAT team for assistance.

The SWAT team attempted to communicate with the man repeatedly. Hearing no response, officers breached the bedroom door and discovered the man deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Division is conducting the investigation into the incident.

On January 3, 2024, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office Deputy O’Brian Hill initiated a high-speed pursuit in Pensacola, Florida, because the driver failed to stop at a traffic stop. Police escalated the chase onto Beverly Parkway, engaging in high-speed maneuvers with lights and sirens activated as law enforcement aggressively attempted to apprehend the fleeing driver. During the pursuit, Deputy Hill ran a red light at high speed, colliding with a vehicle driven by a 56-year-old man who was lawfully crossing the intersection.

The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles, resulting in the death of the bystander at the scene. The fleeing vehicle escaped and has not yet been apprehended. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is leading the investigation into the incident, with oversight from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office to evaluate compliance with departmental pursuit policies. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the identity of the 56-year-old bystander killed in this pursuit crash.

On 12/31/2023, deputies from the Marion County Sheriff's Office attempted a traffic stop on 36-year-old Kyle Last, a person of interest in a burglary investigation. Last allegedly hit a deputy's patrol car when driving away. Officers from the Ocala Police Department located Last and escalated the chase. He crashed into a Berkshire Hathaway Real Estate business at the intersection of East Fort King Street and 22nd Avenue. Last died as a result of the crash.

The Ocala Police Department and Marion County Sheriff's Office are investigating the incident. No further details have been released.

Jackson County deputies arrived on Mimosa Lane where Talmadge Bryant had shot someone. Police engaged in a shootout and shot and killed him.

Paton Pinette had a long history of mental health issues and broke into his former employer’s office, stole a gun and was seen with it elsewhere when police arrived and created a standoff with SWAT eventually killing him. He had been treated and was compliant with medications and needed treatment but was killed by police instead. He had been harassed by a coworker prior to being fired until he broke down according to family members. His family said he was no threat to anyone and was distressed and confused but nonviolent and needed support.
