On March 20, 2021, Shadow Ridge Stanley was riding as a passenger in a stolen Ford Fusion that was pursued by Georgia State Patrol on Interstate 75. The vehicle was traveling at speeds over 120 mph when a trooper performed a PIT maneuver near mile marker 338. The car overturned in the median and struck a tree, killing both Stanley and the driver, Zachary Lumpkin.

On 03/20/2021, deputies from the Houston County Sheriff’s Department and officers from the Centerville Police Department responded to a domestic dispute call at a residence on Village Walk. Officers encountered Shawn Michael Evanuk in the driveway. Evanuk was out on bond and was prohibited from being at the home. Police said Evanuk went inside the residence and barricaded himself with his three young children, threatening to set the house on fire. Officers entered the home after determining the children were inside. During the encounter, police said Evanuk was holding a knife. Officers ordered him to drop it. A struggle followed, and an officer fired a gun, killing Evanuk at the scene. No criminal charges were filed against the officers.

On March 14, 2021, 51-year-old Kelly Shannon Bowen abducted a woman at gunpoint in Reidsville, Georgia, prompting a multi-county pursuit involving several law enforcement agencies. During the chase, Bowen fired at pursuing officers and the victim’s family. A Georgia State Patrol trooper was grazed in the head by gunfire. The pursuit ended on Interstate 16 near Mile Marker 132 in Bulloch County, where officers used a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle. Bowen was shot during the ensuing standoff and later died at the hospital. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted an independent investigation of the incident.

On 03/12/2021, two deputies from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office went to a residence on Augustine Road to serve a court order to take Raymond Tarbox II into custody. During the encounter inside the home, deputies said Tarbox was holding a butcher knife and resisted their efforts to restrain him. Deputies deployed a taser, which did not stop him. One deputy then fired a gun, killing Tarbox at the scene. A grand jury later reviewed the case and ruled the killing justified. No criminal charges were filed against the deputies.

On 02/27/2021, an off-duty Georgia State Patrol trooper was at a BP gas station on Boulevard SE when a man chased another person into the store. The trooper followed them inside. Police said Leroy Snead was armed with a knife and was attempting to stab the other individual. The trooper ordered Snead to drop the knife. The trooper exited the store, and Snead followed him outside. According to authorities, Snead continued moving toward the trooper while holding the knife as the trooper backed away. The trooper then shot and killed Snead.

On February 21, 2021, 23-year-old Keean Smalls of Augusta, Georgia, died after a police pursuit ended in a crash. Around 4:00 a.m., Richmond County Sheriff's deputies attempted to stop Smalls’ vehicle on Gordon Highway. Smalls did not stop, and deputies initiated a pursuit. The chase ended when Smalls drove through a Sprint gas station parking lot near Barton Chapel Road and crashed into the rear of a parked tractor-trailer. Smalls was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:55 a.m. He had to be extricated from the vehicle. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash.

On 02/18/2021, Athens-Clarke County police officers attempted to stop a vehicle reported as stolen. Officers followed the vehicle until it entered a ditch near Fritz Mar Lane and Newton Bridge Road. Timothy Statham exited the vehicle and moved into a wooded area nearby. Additional officers responded and attempted to get him to surrender. Police said Statham did not comply, kept his hands in his pockets, and made statements indicating he had ammunition, although investigators later said he was unarmed. During the encounter, officers reported that Statham moved toward them. Three officers opened fire, striking him. Statham died at the scene.
