On February 11, 2024, at approximately 2:00 PM, officers from the Cumming Police Department responded to a report of shoplifting at the Target store on Marketplace Boulevard in Cumming, Georgia. The store's loss prevention team identified 32-year-old Robert Cornelious Powell of Brooklyn, New York. Upon arrival, officers observed Powell in the parking lot with items believed to be stolen. As officers approached, Powell fled on foot into a nearby wooded area. After a brief pursuit, Powell surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. During the arrest, officers noticed an injury to Powell's leg, and he reported difficulty breathing. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were called, and Powell was transported to Northside Forsyth Hospital. Upon arrival, Powell experienced a medical emergency and was pronounced dead. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.

On January 29, 2024, at approximately 8:00 PM, 58-year-old John Robert Smith of Decatur, Georgia, arrived at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center in Decatur, exhibiting suicidal ideations. Hospital staff escorted Smith to the emergency room for assistance. While in the ER, Smith produced a knife and threatened to harm himself. VA police officers responded to the ER. Smith allegedly refused to drop the knife. Police allege that Smith advanced toward a staff member while still holding the knife. An officer fired shots, fatally wounding Smith. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Smith had a known history of mental health struggles and had sought help at the facility.

On January 21, 2024, at approximately 11:00 PM, officers from the Augusta Police Department and Capitol Police responded to a report of a man, 22-year-old Liban S. Mohamed, threatening residents with a firearm at 132 Northern Avenue in Augusta. Upon arrival, officers encountered Mohamed, who fired at them from a window. In response, three Augusta Police officers—Sergeant Derek Daley, Officer Matthew Gurney, Officer Andrew Frost—and Capitol Police Officer Ryan Frost returned fire. Mohamed was found deceased inside the residence with a handgun by his side. No officers were injured during the incident. The Maine Attorney General's Office conducted an investigation and determined that the officers' actions were justified.

On January 17, 2024, at approximately 9:15 PM, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of 49-year-old Christopher Clyde Valentine, Sr. who had barricaded himself inside a restroom at Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center in Macon, Georgia. Valentine had recently faced shoplifting charges and alleged probation violations, and was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis and feared police. Law enforcement, including SWAT, K-9 units, and hostage negotiators, responded to the scene.

As officers attempted to negotiate, shots were heard from inside the restroom. SWAT units set up a perimeter and intensified efforts to communicate with Valentine. After several hours of pressure and negotiations, the SWAT team began making entry into the restroom. At approximately 12:45 AM on January 18, 2024, Valentine took his own life. His son Christopher Clyde Valentine Jr. would die from suicide under police duress months later also.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office was actively engaged in this situation with a militarized response, deploying SWAT and other specialized units. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an independent review of the incident.

Troup County Sheriff’s Office announced that they chased a vehicle, escalated the hunt to 100 mph and attacked the vehicle with a PIUT maneuver which is known to be almost certainly lethal at such speeds and as expected, the car was hit by police, knocked off the road, ejecting a man and 2 women. The man died. The women were confirmed to be injured and in unknown condition. A high-speed police chase in Hart County, Georgia was initiated by Georgia State Patrol, Hart County Sheriff’s Officeafter a driver attempted to avoid a routine traffic safety check on Georgia Highway 77. The driver, in a white 2013 Nissan Frontier, was initially stopped by deputies at a road check but fled the scene when asked for a driver’s license. Thomasville PD saw a man who had open drug warrants and escalated a high-speed chase through town which ended when the man crashed and killed bystander Jennifer Ferrell who was a third-party motorist waiting at a stop sign. Ms. Farrell had been a beloved wife and mother and one-time local Wendy's worker.

US Marshals arrived to arrest some allegedly escaped inmates and in a chaotic scene shot and killed Christian Williams, another party. Leonard Cure was traffic-stopped on the I-95 in Camden County, Georgia on 10/16/2023 and reportedly cooperated with the deputy until he was told he was under arrest. It is unknown how the deputy approached him or why he was suddenly attacked by taser at a traffic stop but he allegedly fought the deputy because he did not want to go back to jail under any circumstances. He was shot and killed.

Leonard Cure had spent 16 years in a Florida prison and was exonerated when his innocence was proven in 2020. His reaction to being told that he was under arrest for an unknown traffic infraction was to try to escape. He was murdered in the process. Police have no comment so far, have not made claims thus far that he had been armed and have not commented why they killed him. Leonard Cure died at a traffic stop in Georgia at the hands of a deputy on 10/16/2023.

*** 10/20/2023 UPDATE: It was discovered that deputy Buck Aldridge who killed Leonard Cure has a profound history of excessive force and on-duty and off-duty misconduct that caused him to be fired from his previous employer, the Kingsland PD. He was hired as deputy by Camden County in 2017 and is a sergeant.

Geoffry Frank Walker had 2 warrants for a previous family violence episode. Bartow County deputies located him and began an aggressive manhunt for the stated reason of these family fights, attacking him with a PIT maneuver and forcing him to crash his vehicle. Walker reportedly “hopped” out of his vehicle and fled according to local media with police unleashing and siccing a K9 after him. Walker allegedly fired a shot at the police K9 and injured him. The police dog was taken to the hospital and survived. Police chased Walker behind a hotel compound and shot and killed him. Police also seemingly mocked him when they described him as “hopping” away from the vehicle but this description suggests that he may have been injured by the aggressive PIT and dog attack. Police did not state how the police dog was injured, whether by bullet by police or by Walker fighting back.

Georgia State Police said they “saw a Golf Infinity SUV speeding without a driver’s license,” also allegedly running a red light. It is unclear how police knew the driver was unlicensed unless they had been targeting and following him and this detail needs clarification from police. The vehicle slowed down, dropped off a passenger and kept driving. Georgia State troopers hunted the vehicle at high speed until it crashed into a Honda Civic at high speed, instantly killing a woman who had been driving down through Memorial Drive and Hairston Road when hit by the massive police chase crash. She has not been publicly identified yet.

In the early afternoon of 10/10/2023, Peach County Sheriff’s deputies tried to traffic-stop on a Honda Accord EX on State University Drive, Fort Valley, Peach County, Georgia for a traffic violation. The driver, Caleb D. Hooten, age 22, of Warner Robins, GA, did not stop. Police escalated a chase that ended at the Marvin Garden Apartments on Edwards Street when Hooten stopped, ran into the woods, with deputies chasing him on foot. Once in the woods, police allege that Hooten pulled out a gun. They shot and killed him. No BWC, other video or eyewitnesses can be located to compare to the official police narrative. Police did not disclose why they traffic-stopped him or what the urgency was that led to a high-speed chase and fatal shooting as a result of a failed traffic stop.

Donald Bonner Jr. was allegedly in his backyard firing a gun when police were sent. He allegedly got into a spat with them and according to police, he uttered verbal threats to kill police but he is not reported as making hostile gestures and instead went inside of his house in a gesture that he wanted no conflict with police. Police invited Georgia State Patrol and a SWAT team to the home to serve Bonner with warrants for either firing shots in his backyard or issuing alleged verbal threats to police. Several law enforcement agencies besieged the home with militarized SWAT. Police saw Bonner behind his own home, allegedly with a gun. Police shot and killed him. Throughout this ordeal, it does not appear that he was a physical threat to police and he seemed to only want to retreat after whatever he said that escalated police into this killing.

Per GBI’s website, Clayton County PD claim that on Sunday, October 1, 2023, a CCPD officer was near Kendrick Road in Jonesboro, GA when he saw Richard Preston Johnson, 35, motioning his hand towards the officer as if he were pointing a gun at him. The officer approached him and he ran away. The officer chased Johnson behind a home. Police allege that behind the house, Johnson pointed it towards the officer. XionXang Dunn was wanted on several felony warrants out of Florida and Columbia County, GA. Deputies invaded the home on Fleming Street where he lived and found him holding a gun. They shot and killed him.

Clayton County PD arrested 2 men in a hotel for owning drug paraphernalia and guns. A third one, Stephon Ford, escaped. He was located by police and when a K9 was sicced on him, he shot and killed the attacking dog. Police searched for Ford until they found and shot and killed him.
