On 10/13/2021, deputies from multiple Idaho sheriff’s offices encountered Buddy Byron McKenzie in the McCammon area while attempting to locate him in connection with a prior shooting reported earlier in the month. A deputy observed McKenzie inside a pickup truck and attempted to make contact. McKenzie continued driving and police chased the vehicle through the area. During the pursuit, deputies reported that gunfire occurred involving McKenzie. The pursuit later ended near the interchange of U.S. Highway 30 and Interstate 15. On 08/06/2021, Coeur d’Alene police responded to reports that Hayden Charles McIlvain had repeatedly violated a no-contact order with a local family and had made threatening comments while armed, including repeated unwanted contact involving minor children. Officers moved the family to safety and obtained a warrant for first-degree stalking. When officers attempted to arrest McIlvain at his residence on Carrington Lane, he barricaded himself inside the home. Officers from multiple agencies, including SWAT units, spent several hours at the scene attempting to resolve the situation without force. According to police, at some point a shot was fired from inside the residence toward the surrounding officers. A Coeur d’Alene police officer fired one shot at McIlvain, who was later found dead inside the home. On 07/27/2021, the Teton County Sheriff’s Office identified a man who led deputies on a vehicle chase beginning around 11:20 a.m., after he allegedly threatened someone. Deputies located his vehicle on State Highway 33 west of Tetonia around 4:00 p.m. He refused a traffic stop and the pursuit ensued. The chase ended at approximately 5000 West & 4000 North outside Tetonia, where the driver exited the vehicle and died by a self-inflicted gunshot.

On 04/13/2021, Garden City police shot and killed 58 year old Thomas Andrew Bunde during a response to a domestic disturbance at a residence on North Quinella Court. Around 12:52 a.m., three patrol officers arrived at the home. Bunde exited the residence while holding a handgun and spoke to officers. During the encounter, officers opened fire. Bunde was shot by two officers and died at the scene.
The Ada County Prosecutor reviewed the shooting and ruled the officers’ use of deadly force justified. No criminal charges were filed against the officers involved.

On February 8, 2021, Idaho Falls Police officers searched for a man who had fled a traffic stop. During the search, officers entered several backyards in the neighborhood on the 200 block of South Boulevard. Officer Elias Aurelio Cerdasencountered 58-year-old Joseph Johnson in his own backyard and shot him, mistakenly believing he was the fleeing driver. Johnson was unarmed and was not the wanted man but a local homeowner in his own backyard. The wanted man, Tanner Shoesmith, was later found hiding in a nearby shed. In August 2021, Officer Cerdas was indicted on a charge of felony involuntary manslaughter, and in February 2023, Johnson’s family filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against the Idaho Falls Police Department, alleging excessive force and civil rights violations.
