On March 6, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a Kane County Sheriff's Deputy attempted a traffic stop on a black Dodge Durango traveling westbound on Route 64 at speeds of 92 mph. The driver did not stop. Officers escalated a chase which reached speeds of up to 110 mph. The deputy called off the chase and momentarily lost sight of the vehicle, but moments later, the deputy found the Durango crashed into a tree on the west side of Ramm Road. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. The driver’s identity has not been released and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is under investigation by the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force. The identities of the officers involved have not been publicly disclosed.

On February 28, 2024, at approximately 1:00 p.m., DEA agents attempted to arrest a 35-year-old male in the 5300 block of S. Kedzie Avenue, Chicago. During the operation, the individual fired a gun, resulting in a self-inflicted injury. Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers arrived to assist and found the man unresponsive. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The DEA stated that none of their agents discharged their weapons during the incident. A gun was recovered at the scene. The identities of the officers involved have not been publicly disclosed.

On February 24, 2024, at approximately 12:42 p.m., Illinois State Police responded to reports of shots fired involving two vehicles stopped on the shoulder of northbound Interstate 55 near Lexington, Illinois. Upon arrival, officers observed 37-year-old Trayvon C. Little standing behind one of the vehicles, pointing a firearm toward them. Officers issued commands for Little to drop the weapon; however, he did not comply. Officers then exchanged gunfire with Little, who was fatally struck and later pronounced deceased at the scene.

Subsequent investigation confirmed that Little had fired a shot from inside his vehicle in the direction of another vehicle before officers arrived. The ISP Division of Internal Investigation is conducting the ongoing investigation, with findings to be reviewed by the McLean County State’s Attorney’s Office.

On February 14, 2024, Chillicothe Police stopped 50-year-old Marvin Martin III on the 1800 block of North Finney Street, believing he was driving a stolen vehicle. As officers approached, Martin allegedly reached for a weapon. Police engaged him in a shootout, during which Martin was struck and killed by gunfire.

On February 9, 2024, at approximately 2:19 p.m., a Cahokia Heights police officer initiated a pursuit of a speeding vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Bond Avenue. The fleeing vehicle collided with a Honda Civic driven by 60-year-old Marilyn Hill, who was turning into a driveway, resulting in the deaths of Hill and her passenger, 73-year-old Willie Buford.

The driver of the pursued vehicle fled on foot and, during the escape, accidentally shot himself. He was subsequently hospitalized in critical condition.

St. Louis Police chased a vehicle into the path of Marilyn Hill, 60, killing her and her passenger Willie Buford. Police shot and critically injured the fleeing driver. His condition is unknown.

On February 6, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Granite City police officers responded to a disturbance involving 39-year-old Donald J. Friese. Upon arrival, officers engaged in an altercation with Friese, who allegedly fired multiple shots, striking one officer in the arm. The officer was treated and released. Friese fled the scene on foot, later returning to his residence and escaping in a vehicle.

The following evening, February 7, 2024, Cape Girardeau police received an alert about a vehicle driven by Friese. The alert was triggered by an Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system. Officers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. Friese fled, and officers escalated the pursuit across the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge into Illinois. The chase continued until Friese's vehicle became stuck in a field near East Cape Girardeau.

Friese locked himself inside his vehicle and fired at law enforcement officers with a rifle. Officers returned fire, fatally striking Friese.

On February 3, 2024, at approximately 4:15 a.m., Carol Stream police responded to a domestic violence call at the Villagebrook Apartments. Officers spoke with the alleged victim, who reported a physical altercation with 30-year-old Isaac Goodlow, resulting in visible injuries. She provided consent for officers to enter the apartment, expressing concern for her dog and belongings left inside.

After approximately 50 minutes of attempts to contact Goodlow, officers obtained a key from the apartment manager and entered the unit. Upon opening the bedroom door, officers encountered Goodlow, who was shot once in the chest. Officers immediately called for paramedics and began administering aid. Goodlow was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His family contested the need for the shooting, stating he had never been violent and that police had “shot him down like a dog.”

On January 27, 2024, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Bellwood police responded to a report of shots fired in the 200 block of 32nd Avenue. Officers discovered a man who had been shot and later died at the hospital. During the investigation, officers observed a vehicle fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. The pursuit was initiated, and the vehicle continued to travel at excessive speeds through Forest Park. The chase ended when the vehicle crashed into a tree at the intersection of Randolph and Des Plaines Avenue, bursting into flames. Two individuals inside the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

On January 11, 2024, at approximately 11:51 a.m., Quincy Police Department officers responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 700 block of North 3rd Street. Upon arrival, officers observed 49-year-old Donald H. Hibbard with a handgun tucked in his waistband. Officer Hermsmeier attempted to de-escalate the situation using a TASER™, which was unsuccessful. During a struggle to gain control, Hibbard drew the handgun and fired, striking Officer Hermsmeier in the right upper arm. Officer VanderMaiden, fearing for both officers' lives, drew his service weapon and fired two rounds, fatally wounding Hibbard. Officer Hermsmeier was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Blessing Hospital. Hibbard was transported to the same hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident was investigated by the Illinois State Police, with findings reviewed by the Adams County State’s Attorney’s Office. No charges were filed against the officers involved.

A 24-year-old man was being chase by the Vehicular Hijacking Task Force who tried to make an “investigatory stop” while looking for stolen cars when the man fled on foot. A vehicle hit and killed him and the vehicle fled.

On December 7, 2023, off-duty Chicago police officer Tangie Brown struck Maria “Tonie” Schwab, a pedestrian, while driving intoxicated. Brown had been drinking and dropped her cell phone, which she attempted to retrieve while driving at high speed. In the process, she lost control of her SUV, swerved, hit a median, and then mounted the curb, striking Schwab, who was walking on the sidewalk. Brown's blood alcohol content (BAC) was found to be above the legal limit.

The officer was found to be intoxicated above the legal limit when causing the accident and in February of 2024 was charged with Aggravated DUI/Accident/Death, one felony charge of Aggravated Use of Communication Device/Death, two misdemeanor charges of Failure to Give Info/Render Aid/Injury and one misdemeanor charge of Reckless Driving. She was also cited for Failure to Reduce Speed and Improper Traffic Lane Usage.

Two women were reportedly involved in a domestic fight with items being thrown out of an apartment. Police arrived and determined the fight was under control. One of the women, Christina McKinney, left the apartment and police followed her, yelling demands when they saw her hand in her pocket. Officer Blake Hollins fired 2 shots and killed her. The object turned out to be an AirSoft gun, a plastic replica of a weapon. The domestic disturbance had ended when police appeared. Police released a bodycam video that is heavily redacted with the entire figure of the woman being killed is blurred out throughout.

The officer who shot and killed McKinney was named as Blake Hollins who had received a previous 21-day suspension for preceding incidents with recommendations from superiors to fire him. This was apparently stopped by the police union. Officer Hollins was back on duty and shot and killed Christina McKinney. He received a 3-day suspension and was cleared back to work after that.

Round Lake Beach PD arrived at a domestic violence call to find two women who had injuries from being hit with a sledge hammer. A man was allegedly walking toward police with a sledge hammer. They shot and killed him.

Round Lake Beach PD were called to a residence where a man who had once had a relationship with the resident had arrived and was unwanted. The resident had called police and the man left. Police allege that he had a meat cleaver at one point but there is no report of violence so far reported during the home invasion event.

Police arrived and looked for him, found him and hunted him westbound on Rollins Road. Police escalated a chase and promptly “called off the chase” before the vehicle crashed into 2 parked cars. The force of the pursuit crash was such that one of the parked vehicles spun into a 55-year-old man who was there to look at the vehicles as they were for sale. The 55-year-old was transported to the hospital in unknown condition and his survival is unknown. The man who had been hunted by police into this crash died and was identified as 38-year-old Lamar Chargois.

Lake County deputies responded to a call about a suicidal man with a meat cleaver. Police arrived and found an unconscious man who was injured and had lost a lot of blood. As police began handling him, he woke up and allegedly picked up a meat cleaver. Police shot and killed him. Since the man was seriously injured on the ground and fading in and out of consciousness, it is unclear why deputies could not step a few feet away from him if they were threatened and call for more competent medical and mental health help instead of killing him.

Chicago PD stopped a 30-year-old man in his vehicle for a code violation. It is unknown what transpired but the man got out of his car and fled away from police on foot. The trooper claims to have lost sight of him. He was found dead on the tracks from unknown cause shortly thereafter. Danville PD saw a vehicle being driven by a man whose license was revoked. Police claim they saw the man driving erratically, bump a curb and police escalated a chase. The vehicle fled and police allege the driver threw a handgun out of the window. The vehicle crashed into a pickup truck driven by third party motorist William J. Marietta, 74, who was critically injured and later died in the hospital.

Police were called to a medical emergency with a man having a diabetic reaction. Police fired a taser at the stricken man who died en route to the hospital. Various diabetic states commonly produce confused and combative states and such situations should be addressed by trained medical staff, not police with deadly weapons.

Grundy County deputies shot and killed Alivia A. Schwab on 09/29/2023 at 11:23 a.m. during a mental health crisis when she needed help. She was on the phone with her mental health counselor when police arrived, saw her holding a 9-inch kitchen knife in the parking lot with alleged intention of self-harming. Officer Pampinella instructed Officer Price to use a taser but Officer price pulled his gun and shot her in the face, then shot her two more times, killing her. She was a mother of 3 children. Her family stated the shooting was mental-health related. Her death was ruled a homicide. No officers were charged so far.

UPDATE: The family has filed a lawsuit in December of 2023.

Fairmount PD attempted a traffic stop on Kyeiree Myers for reasons they would
not disclose. Kyeiree allegedly stopped and then walked away from the car and
the approaching officer. Another officer on foot began chasing him, stopped him
and escalated a fight with him. Kyeiree ran from this officer, jumped in the patrol
car and drove away. Police fired shots at him. Kyeiree stopped a while later once
he was out of range of the attacking officers and collapsed onto the roadway
because he had been shot when fleeing from the attacking officer. As he fell, two
cars including another patrol vehicle in a row ran over him and killed him.

Chicago PD, FBI and SWAT were executing an arrest warrant in the 5400 block of West Walton Street when they shot and killed the person. Police felt the man was responsible for a bank robbery.

On 07/03/2023, Danville PD and Illinois State Troopers jointly chased a vehicle believed to be involved in a previous crime. The high-speed chase continued through Vermilion and Champaign counties until police briefly lost sight of the vehicle, again finding it at 2200 County Road 2250 East with the driver being in a garage. SWAT was called and the man was shot and killed. It is not known whether he had been armed.

Jordan A. Richardson was shot as he fled from a traffic stop on East Campbell Avenue around 12:30 p.m. Officers saw that he was armed and alleged that during the pursuit, Richardson turned toward officers with the gun in his hand. They shot and killed him. This was the second officer-involved fatal shooting in Rantoul this year.
In February, a former Chicago man, Azaan Lee, 21, was shot and killed allegedly because he had a weapon on him.

Police received a call that a person had been prominently displaying a red and yellow swastika sign from scaffolding atop the building. Police said the swastika has gone up and down since police responded to the home several weeks ago.The man had been displaying nazi symbols and loudly played a wide range of music, from opera to salsa, sometimes throughout the day and night. He occasionally broadcasts hateful rants, including ones targeting President Joe Biden.

About 9:40 a.m. on 06/03/2023, officers responded to a call of him being armed with a gun on a rooftop in the 4100 block of West Chicago Avenue. When police arrived, Litsiardakis allegedly entered the building and refused to exit the property. SWAT were called and besieged the home. Hours later, officers forcibly entered the building and discovered him dead inside from suicide under police duress.

Blue Island PD responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle and found a man sleeping inside the vehicle, allegedly with a weapon lying near him in the car. Officers knocked on the window. They allege that William Burruss Jr. reached for the weapon. They shot and killed him.
