On May 1, 2025, Lafayette police responded to a domestic disturbance at the Cypress Square Apartments on Ravenwood Court. A woman and her juvenile son had requested assistance leaving the residence due to safety concerns. While officers were inside the apartment with the woman and child, Kenneth D. Smith, 55, began firing a weapon in their direction. Officer Jeremy Kennedy, a 7-year veteran of the department, returned fire, striking Smith. Officer Evan Sturgeon, a 5-year veteran, was present but did not discharge his weapon. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman and her child were unharmed, and no officers were injured. On April 23, 2025, at approximately 8:40 a.m., officers from the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police responded to a report of a man allegedly pointing a firearm at another individual in the 700 block of Dana, Indiana. Upon arrival, officers established defensive positions as 57-year-old Michael Landers exited the residence while brandishing a gun. The Terre Haute Police Department’s Special Response Team was called to assist. According to preliminary investigations, Landers pointed his weapon directly at officers. An officer opened fire, striking Landers. Medical aid was administered at the scene, and Landers was transported to a hospital in Clinton, Indiana, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, and the incident is under investigation by the Indiana State Police.

On April 14, 2025, Henry County Sheriff's deputies attempted to stop a maroon Dodge Durango driven by Dewuan Hampton for erratic driving on State Road 3 near Indiana Avenue in New Castle. Hampton fled, initiating a pursuit that continued westbound on I-70 through Hancock County and into Marion County. Police chased the vehicle at high speed for more than 40 miles until it crashed into 2 cars. Dewuan Hampton was ejected as the vehicle rolled multiple times. He died on the road at East Washington Street and Mitthoefer Road in Indianapolis. Three passengers in the Durango and the driver of the Mustang were transported to local hospitals with varying injuries. The Indiana State Police are investigating the circumstances of the pursuit and crash.
