On April 9, 2025, Gary Police responded to a home on the 2200 block of Carolina Street after reports of a domestic disturbance involving a 38-year-old man barricaded in a room with a one-year-old baby while armed. A 35-year-old family member was shot and injured before police arrived. The man fired multiple shots at responding officers. Gary SWAT, with assistance from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, used tear gas and tactical equipment. Around 4:20 a.m., the man exited the home holding the baby and pointing a gun at officers. A Gary officer shot and killed him. The baby appeared physically unharmed.

The caller reported that Parrott had been abusive in the past and had thrown the family’s cat at the victim. Officers arrived at the residence shortly after 9 p.m. and observed Parrott inside, with a young child briefly running outside before running back inside. Upon arrival, officers issued verbal commands for Parrott to drop the firearm he was reportedly holding. Instead of complying, Parrott raised the firearm and aimed it at officers. An officer fired one round, striking Parrott in the chest. The entire encounter lasted 48 seconds.

Parrott was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and remained in intensive care. He faces multiple felony charges, including intimidation with a deadly weapon, domestic battery, neglect of a dependent, and animal cruelty. On 10/08/2024, deputies from the White County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance at a local liquor store in Monon, Indiana, involving an allegedly intoxicated man. Upon arrival, deputies learned the man had left on foot and fled to a nearby residence on State Road 16.

On 09/24/2024, at approximately 7:50 p.m., the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department requested assistance from the Indiana State Police Putnamville Post for a domestic situation involving a shooting and a man who had locked himself in a home near South 4th Street in Merom, Indiana.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman with multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a local hospital and then airlifted to a hospital in Indianapolis for further medical care; her injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.

The man, 53-year-old Tony G. Maree, had locked himself inside the residence. Officers established a perimeter around the home, and the Sullivan County Sheriff requested assistance from the Terre Haute Police Department Emergency Response Team.

After several unsuccessful verbal and tactical attempts to contact Maree, the response team entered the residence and found him deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On 09/16/2024, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Fort Wayne Police Department officers responded to a report of a domestic violence incident in the 5900 block of Hessen Cassel Road. A 911 caller reported that a man had struck his wife and had a firearm.

Officers located the man's vehicle en route. The man, identified as Samuel Sterling Caston, intentionally collided with a police vehicle and fled. Officers escalated a pursuit that ended in the 400 block of E. Leith Street. In an alley, Caston reportedly began shooting, striking a police vehicle. Officers returned fire, hitting Caston.

Caston was pronounced deceased at the scene. A firearm was recovered. The incident is under investigation by Indiana State Police, and the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave per policy.

On 09/08/2024, 26-year-old Rhyker Earl experienced a seizure at his residence on Bahama Drive in the Island Grove Mobile Home Park, DeMotte, Indiana. His grandmother called 911 for medical assistance. Jasper County Sheriff's deputies and paramedics arrived on the scene.

While in a postictal state—a period of confusion following a seizure—Earl reportedly became agitated. Family members stated that during this state, Earl accidentally bumped into a responder. In response, deputies restrained Earl by pinning him face-down on the floor and handcuffing his hands behind his back. Body camera footage shows Earl pleading for relief, saying, "Grandma, please, make 'em get off of me."

Approximately two minutes after Earl stopped moving, first responders noticed he wasn't breathing. They initiated CPR and transported him to a hospital, where he was placed on life support. Earl died two days later, on 09/10/2024.

The Lake County Coroner's autopsy determined that Earl died of natural causes with no evidence of trauma. However, Earl's family disputes this finding, asserting that the restraint methods used by deputies contributed to his death. They have retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump and are calling for transparency and accountability, including the release of all body camera footage.

On September 6, 2024, at approximately 1:51 a.m., Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) officers responded to a reported burglary in progress at 1527 Wells Street. Upon arrival, officers heard screams from within the residence and entered the home. Inside, they encountered 58-year-old John Edward McCloud, described by authorities as an unhoused individual. During this encounter, Officer Julian Mestre discharged his firearm, striking McCloud.

Officers initiated emergency medical care and requested medics. Despite these efforts, McCloud was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Allen County Coroner's Office later confirmed that McCloud died from multiple gunshot wounds, ruling the death a homicide resulting from police action.

The FWPD placed Officer Mestre on administrative leave, adhering to standard department protocol. Mestre, who joined the department in June 2018, has a history of three reprimands related to vehicle incidents and received an award for excellence in 2021.

This incident marks the third fatal police-action shooting in Fort Wayne since June 2024.
