On July 24, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers from the Salina Police Department arrived at 544 N. 12th Street in Salina, Kansas, to execute an arrest warrant for 44-year-old Larry J. Wray Jr. Upon entering the detached garage east of the residence, officers arrested Larry Wray Jr. without incident. During the arrest, officers noticed another individual, later identified as 25-year-old Jesse D. Wray, inside the garage. When officers attempted to make contact, Jesse Wray displayed a firearm and threatened to shoot if they entered.

Officers established a perimeter and summoned the Salina SWAT Team for assistance. Troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol also responded to the location of the home. While awaiting the SWAT team's arrival, officers observed smoke and flames emanating from the garage. The garage door then opened, and a female emerged with her hands raised, followed by Jesse Wray. Wray took cover behind a parked truck in the driveway, assuming a shooting stance with his hands extended toward the officers.

In response, two Salina Police Department officers discharged nine rounds, none of which struck Wray. Wray then moved to the west side of the garage, where he encountered additional officers and troopers. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper and a Salina Police Department officer fired four shots, fatally wounding Wray. He was pronounced deceased at the location at 8:45 p.m. The female was evaluated at Salina Regional Health Center and later released.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation presented their findings to the Saline County Attorney for review. On November 4, 2024, Saline County Attorney Jeffery Ebel concluded that the use of deadly force was justified.

On June 22, 2024, at approximately 1:00 a.m., a Newton Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle driven by 38-year-old James Lightfoot in Newton, Kansas, due to a malfunctioning headlight. Instead of stopping, Lightfoot fled northbound on Interstate 135, leading officers on a pursuit that continued into Marion County. At around 1:40 a.m., Newton officers lost sight of Lightfoot's vehicle near 230th and Diamond Roads. Marion County deputies also discontinued their search in the same vicinity.

On June 24, a resident reported a silver Dodge truck partially submerged in a pond near 240th and Kanza Roads, close to Marion Reservoir. Deputies identified the vehicle as Lightfoot's 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. A search that evening, including the use of a Kansas Highway Patrol aircraft equipped with infrared technology, failed to locate Lightfoot.

On June 26, the Sedgwick County K-9 Cadaver Team joined the search. At approximately 10:35 a.m., a cadaver dog led searchers to Lightfoot's body, located several hundred yards southeast of his truck in a heavily wooded area. Marion County Coroner Don Hodson reported that Lightfoot died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A .380 ACP handgun was found under his left hand.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was notified and conducted a scene investigation and body recovery. Authorities found no signs of foul play.

On May 27, 2024, at approximately 6:45 p.m., Kansas City, Missouri, police officers responded to an armed carjacking near East 24th Street and Highland Avenue, where a blue 2010 GMC Terrain was stolen at gunpoint by two male suspects. Around 8:00 p.m., officers located the stolen vehicle near 15th Street and The Paseo. When the driver refused to stop, a pursuit ensued, crossing into Kansas City, Kansas. Officers from the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Mission Police Department joined the chase.

At approximately 8:17 p.m., a 21-year-old male passenger exited the vehicle near 18th Street Expressway and Steele Avenue and was taken into custody. The driver, identified as 41-year-old Jason A. Burk of Kansas City, Missouri, continued fleeing. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, causing the GMC to strike a guardrail near Highway 69 and the 18th Street Expressway, bringing it to a stop.

Burk then fired shots at the officers. Two officers from the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department and five officers from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department returned fire, striking Burk multiple times. Burk was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple shooting victims. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transported six individuals to local hospitals, including 24-year-old Jahquan M. Robinson, who was pronounced deceased.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a disturbance among a group escalated into gunfire. A Westport Public Safety Security officer, responding to the shots, encountered Robinson actively firing a weapon. The security officer discharged their firearm, striking Robinson.

On May 26, 2024, at approximately 1:50 a.m., a Haskell County Sheriff's deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver, 37-year-old Richard Castillo of Ulysses, Kansas, did not stop. Officers escalated a pursuit northbound on Highway 83 onto Highway 144, where Castillo attempted a U-turn, colliding with the deputy's vehicle and coming to rest in the north ditch.

Two deputies rushed to the vehicle and alleged that Castillo produced a gun. Both deputies opened fire, striking him. EMS arrived and pronounced Castillo deceased at 2:55 a.m. The deputies were placed on paid administrative leave.

On April 9, 2024, at approximately 6:55 a.m., a motorist reported a vehicle stopped in the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 160, about one mile west of Attica, Kansas. A Harper County Sheriff's deputy arrived and found a tan 2006 Toyota Prius halted in the middle of the highway. Approaching to offer assistance, the deputy observed the driver, 54-year-old Cheryl R. Gaines of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, holding a knife in one hand and scissors in the other.

An officer from the Attica Police Department soon joined the deputy. Both officers retreated approximately 100 yards from the vehicle and repeatedly commanded Gaines to drop her weapons and exit the car. Gaines exited the vehicle but refused to relinquish the knife and scissors. She then charged at the officers. As they retreated, the Attica officer tripped and fell. Gaines approached the fallen officer, still armed, prompting the Harper County deputy to fire three shots, striking her.

Emergency Medical Services pronounced Gaines deceased at the location around 7:15 a.m.

His vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a westbound 2017 Dodge Charger driven by 26-year-old Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputy Justin Ward.

A second deputy, 28-year-old Zachary Farmer, was following in a 2022 Dodge Durango and sustained minor damage while attempting to avoid the collision. Dollar was pronounced deceased at the scene. Deputy Ward suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Deputy Farmer was not injured. Two passengers in Dollar's vehicle, including 18-year-old Amir Luten, sustained minor injuries.

On March 26, 2024, reports indicated that 68-year-old Bill Dean Osterhout was suicidal. Per his girlfriend, he was not at the residence and had sent concerning text messages.

At around 5:31 p.m., officers located Osterhout sitting in his pickup truck in the parking lot of a liquor store at 237 N. Main Street. Officers approached and observed a handgun between his legs. They engaged him and demanded that he put down the gun. He allegedly made suicidal statements, pointing the gun at his head and chin multiple times.

Police alleged that at approximately 5:42 p.m., he pointed the handgun at them. Two officers opened fire, collectively firing 22 rounds and striking him. Osterhout was pronounced deceased at the location at 5:49 p.m.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation. The findings will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for review.

On March 6, 2024, at approximately 7:44 p.m., Sedgwick County 911 received a report of a man pointing a gun at another person in the 2300 block of North Fairview. Luis Alfonso Rivera, 35 years old, had left the residence before officers arrived.

At around 7:54 p.m., Wichita Police Department officers located Rivera walking south on Fairview with a handgun pressed to his head, shouting at the officers. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, following him on foot and in vehicles as he proceeded west on 21st Street, continuing to hold the gun to his head and ignoring multiple commands to drop the weapon. A police negotiator used a patrol car's public address system to communicate with Rivera, but he remained unresponsive to directives.

At approximately 8:06 p.m., in a parking lot at 21st and Arkansas, an officer fired a beanbag round, striking Rivera in the back. Rivera then turned toward the officers, leveled his gun at them, and fired multiple rounds. Eight officers opened fire, striking Rivera multiple times. Officers administered aid until emergency medical services arrived, but Rivera was pronounced deceased at the location at 8:21 p.m.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation, with findings to be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for review.

On January 25, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Wichita Police Department officers initiated a vehicle pursuit near East Bayley and Schweiter Drive after locating a vehicle reportedly stolen at knifepoint earlier that evening. The driver, 43-year-old Larry K. Armour, drove until East Harry and Green Street, where he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot with officers in pursuit. He then forcibly entered a residence in the 2400 block of East Harry Street, armed with a knife, and took the male occupant hostage.

A tactical team comprising Wichita Police Department officers, Sedgwick County deputies, and police negotiators arrived at the residence just before 1 a.m. At approximately 3 a.m., a deputy observed Armour through a window standing over the hostage and threatening him with a large knife, shouting that he would kill him. The deputy fired one shot, striking Armour. Armour was transported to a local hospital, where he died.
