On 07/16/2021, a deputy attempted a traffic stop on Ramiro A. Rosete Jr. and discovered an outstanding warrant. He continued driving and was later located at a hotel where officers initiated a standoff and SWAT negotiations. Rosete barricaded himself, stated he had a handgun, and agreed to surrender after hours of contact. A gunshot was heard and officers found him with a self inflicted wound. He died at a hospital. Rosete was 43.

Wichita police officers were made aware of a man experiencing mental health issues and suicidal thoughts. The man had reportedly threatened his neighbors and pointed a gun at individuals in a Wichita business. In the evening, officers pursued the man through several areas of west Wichita. His vehicle veered off the road at 55th Street South and South Meridian Avenue and entered a wheat field. The speed of the vehicle and heat from the engine sparked a fire in the dry grass, engulfing the car in flames. The man died from burns and smoke inhalation.

An armed robbery occurred at a hotel. Police chased several individuals, arresting one, while another fled in a vehicle. Wichita PD escalated a high-speed chase. At the intersection of Central and Ridge, the fleeing vehicle ran a red light and crashed into the car driven by Samantha Russell. Russell, who was eight months pregnant, was killed in the crash. Around 12:50 a.m. on June 27, 2021, a Plainville Police Department officer arrived at a convenience store at 601 South Washington Street in Plainville. The officer was aware that 29-year-old Nicole Dechant of Hays had a misdemeanor warrant for her arrest. Upon approaching Dechant, who was seated on a curb outside the store, the officer informed her of the intent to take her into custody. During the interaction, Dechant allegedly reached into her bag and produced a firearm. The officer commanded her to put down the gun, but Dechant reportedly ignored the commands, leading the officer to fire multiple times, resulting in her death.

Around 3:45 p.m., officers were called to a domestic disturbance where Dennis Delgado was allegedly attempting to break into a home. Before police arrived, a resident shot Delgado. Upon arrival, officers encountered Delgado, who was reportedly armed, leading to an altercation during which police shot and killed him.

On June 20, 2021, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Kansas City, Missouri, police officers attempted to stop a Ford Expedition linked to an armed carjacking in Kansas City, Kansas. The driver, identified as 25-year-old Dario Dominguez, did not yield, leading officers on a pursuit into Kansas City, Kansas. The chase concluded when Dominguez crashed the SUV behind a convenience store near North 18th Street and Parallel Parkway. Dominguez exited the vehicle armed with a handgun and fled on foot. During the pursuit, he reportedly turned and fired at officers, who returned fire, fatally wounding him. Dominguez was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On 06/19/2021, Bonner Springs police attempted a traffic stop on Interstate 70 after observing a vehicle with an expired license plate. The driver, Darrell Vincent, did not stop. Police escalated a chase along I-70. During the pursuit, officers deployed a PIT maneuver to disable Vincent’s vehicle. The maneuver caused the vehicle to overturn. Vincent was ejected during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 57 years old. Reporting did not indicate that Vincent was armed. The investigation into the police pursuit and crash was reported as pending at the time of coverage.

At about 10:15 p.m., officers responded to a welfare check to check on a woman at a home. Upon arrival, two officers contacted the woman and her daughter at the home. The woman reported a physical disturbance with her boyfriend, Tyler Hodge. The woman told officers she believed Hodge had left. Hodge's vehicle was at the home, so the officers began checking the home and property. The two officers found Hodge seated in a detached shed in the backyard, armed with a rifle. Hodge ran toward the officers and fired multiple shots. During an exchange of gunfire in which a deputy was wounded, police shot and killed Hodge.

On May 27, 2021, at approximately 10:50 p.m., a Holton police officer initiated a pursuit of a 2009 Dodge Avenger on Highway 75 through Holton. The vehicle, driven by a 42-year-old man from Topeka, collided with a Jeep near the intersection of US-75 and 286th Road. Both vehicles veered off the road, with the Avenger landing on its side. The driver and a 19-year-old passenger sustained injuries. A third passenger, 26-year-old Shai Lorene Chantele Boyd, was killed in the crash.

Officers from the Lenexa Police Department had initially reportedly responded to an incident at 8015 Lenexa Drive in Overland Park, Kansas. An altercation occurred, during which police opened fire, killing Darren Dejuan Chandler. No further details about the incident have been released. Chandler was pronounced dead at the location. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.

At around 2:55 a.m., Ford County dispatch sent a be-on-the-lookout for a person wanted in Garden City who allegedly was involved in a stabbing. Gray County deputies located Luis Salgado's vehicle at around 3:17 a.m. The deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but Luis Salgado continued driving. Deputies escalated a chase into Ford County, where Ford County deputies joined the chase at 3:24 a.m. Spike strips were deployed west of Dodge City, deflating one of the tires. Salgado continued driving east into Dodge City before veering off the roadway, striking a power pole, and rolling several times. He was ejected and died at the crash site.

Following multiple pursuits, 23-year-old Devawn Mitchell allegedly crashed into Steven A. Henry. Henry’s vehicle was struck from behind at a high rate of speed.

Around 7 p.m., a family member of Jim Wright reported concerns about his welfare. Deputies found him near the Clark and Meade County line, where Wright fled in his SUV. After a pursuit, deputies deployed spike strips, slowing Wright's vehicle until it stopped. Wright exited the vehicle holding a firearm. Despite commands to drop the weapon, around 9:40 p.m., officers from multiple agencies shot and killed him.

On 03/06/2021, 45-year-old Anita Benz was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a pursuit initiated by the Kansas Highway Patrol near NW Paramore and Lyman Road in Topeka. Troopers pursued the vehicle after alleging it was stolen and that it refused to stop. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper conducted a pursuit intervention (pit maneuver), causing the vehicle to collide with a utility pole. Benz sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Investigators subsequently cleared the troopers involved. Benz’s family later filed a civil lawsuit challenging the pursuit tactics, and the state settled the case, awarding money to the family.

At 2:30 a.m., a deputy attempted to stop Timothy A. Tatum, riding a Honda Shadow, for a registration violation. When the deputy activated his lights and sirens, Tatum fled. Less than a half-mile from where the pursuit began, Tatum hit a raised median and was killed.

On 02/19/2021, Ottawa police responded to a call in the 2300 block of South Cedar Street. Officers encountered an individual and gunfire occurred during the response. Police opened fire and killed the individual. Authorities did not release identifying details and the incident was investigated by state authorities.

On January 29, 2021, a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop a vehicle in North Topeka for a cracked windshield. The driver refused to stop, and police escalated a pursuit. At approximately 55 miles per hour, the trooper executed a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver, causing the vehicle to lose control and strike a telephone pole. A passenger in the vehicle was killed in the crash. The Kansas Highway Patrol reviewed the pursuit and PIT procedure following the fatality.

Officers received a report of a driver speeding through a neighborhood. Although they lost sight of the vehicle, they later observed it traveling at 114 mph in a 45 mph zone. The driver lost control, hitting a sign and a tree before coming to a stop. The driver, Juan Carlos Marquez, was killed.
