On 08/22/2022, Shreveport Police Department officers responded to a report of a man in distress at the Riverview Park riverfront casino district. Officers found Brandon Richardson, 32, who had been facing trial that day on attempted second-degree murder and related charges, including a January 17, 2021 shooting incident. Richardson pulled out a firearm as officers approached and then shot and killed himself. Law enforcement located him and confirmed he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during the encounter.

Caddo Parish Sheriff's deputies escalated a chase of a pickup that crashed when it ran off the road and hit a tree. The truck erupted in flames and the driver died.

Dave Bigord, 24, of Mount Olive, North Carolina, allegedly shot a man and forced his girlfriend into a vehicle at gunpoint and fled the scene before officers arrived. Vernon Parish law enforcement tried to traffic-stop him and escalated a chase. During the chase, NPD said Bigord’s girlfriend jumped free from the vehicle in Alexandria.
Bigord eventually crashed his vehicle into a ditch on Hwy 165 just south of Glenmora in Rapides Parish. He committed suicide under police duress.

George Desamon Jr. allegedly refused to stop for a traffic stop and police escalated a chase and the Explorer overturned and then came to rest in the parking lot of the Carencro Community Center. Desamon was in the passenger seat and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office. Police alleged that the vehicle had been stolen.

Bossier City police tried to traffic-stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The vehicle did not stop and Louisiana State Police joined Bossier City PD in the chase. As troopers joined the chase, the vehicle crashed into a brick wall. The vehicle flipped multiple times until hitting a utility pole and stopping. Adler was an unrestrained passenger and was ejected from the vehicle, where she sustained fatal injuries. A second unrestrained juvenile passenger was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police claim that Baldwin was travelling 77 mph in a 55 mph speed zone south on LA 27 near US Hwy 90 when State troopers escalated a chase which exceeded 100 mph. While being chased through an intersection, he struck a raised concrete curb and he was ejected from the motorcycle, later passed away on May 16.

Louisiana State Police allegedly saw a stolen vehicle on the highway that refused a traffic stop. They claim that Rhett Thibodeaux fled in the car and once he stopped, he reversed the vehicle. Police claim that he reversed towards them, and therefore shot and killed him. It is unknown whether he ever presented a danger to the officers.

Jefferson Parish deputies Isaac Hughes and Jonathan Lewis were sent to a noise complaint call. They encountered Daniel Valle in his car and demanded that he get out. He did not “obey their commands” for several minutes and allegedly finally turned on his engine and honked the horn. As soon as the horn was sounded, the two deputies opened fire and shot and killed him.

A Lafayette PD officer tried to stop a car they felt may be stolen. Police allege the driver pulled into a parking lot and fled on foot. Police and a K9 chased him until he jumped from a structure and fell to the ground. Officers attempted to taser him and tasered the K9 dog instead with the dog backing away, apparently unwilling to attack after being shocked. Police allege the man they had hunted down produced a gun and shot him to death. His mother, Tonya Coates, demanded transparency from law enforcement in her son Tyron Coates's death and demanded evidence of a gun. Police stated there had been a gun but did not provide bodycam or other evidence.

On 01/23/2022, Baton Rouge Police Department officers responded to a call in the 2000 block of General Taylor Avenue. Officers encountered 33-year-old Kendrick Holland during the response. Officers fired their weapons during the encounter, striking and killing Holland at the scene. Louisiana State Police conducted the investigation into the officers’ use of deadly force.

On January 13, 2022, a sheriff’s deputy in Louisiana was pursuing a robbery suspect when the deputy’s patrol car collided with the vehicle of a woman who was uninvolved in the pursuit. The impact killed the woman at the scene and injured two children who were in the vehicle with her. The deputy was also injured and hospitalized. The case was turned over to state authorities for investigation to determine whether pursuit protocols were properly followed.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies arrived at an apartment building, knocking on doors, looking for someone wanted for kidnapping. A family was intimidated by the aggressive knocking and gathered in the back of the house, apparently unaware the knocking was police. A man in the household finally opened the door and was shot dead. Police said he had a gun. The occupants of the apartment did not seem to have been aware it was police at the door and police on BWC are confirmed to have made noise only but not identified themselves.

On December 27, 2021, at approximately 9:45 p.m., Lake Charles Police Department officers responded to reports of a man with a handgun in the 1000 block of Mill Street. The individual, identified as 22-year-old Christopher Thomas, allegedly fired multiple shots toward a residence before fleeing on foot. Later that night, Thomas returned to the same residence and fired additional shots, injuring an occupant in the foot. Officers located Thomas at a residence in the 2000 block of Cline Street around 3:00 a.m. on December 28. He exited the house with a handgun and body armor but went inside again. Thomas then fired shots at officers from the front driveway. Officers opened fire and killed him.

On December 22, 2021, shortly before 6:00 p.m., a Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Deputy and a Livonia Police Department officer responded to a disturbance call on Cleveland Road in Fordoche, Louisiana. Residents reported that 48-year-old Jessie Lee Gaither IV had driven his truck into the front of a residence, causing substantial damage. Gaither exited the vehicle with a knife in one hand and a gun in the other. He left and walked up the street. Officers engaged Gaither in an altercation and fired a Taser at him. Gaither discharged a flare gun at the officers. An officer opened fire and killed him. Gaither was pronounced dead by the Pointe Coupee Parish Coroner's Office.

On December 21, 2021, at approximately 6:52 p.m., Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a residence on Larry Cook Road in Pitkin, Louisiana, following reports of a woman threatening to harm herself. Upon arrival, a man exited the residence and informed deputies that 44-year-old Chantel Jean Myers was inside, threatening to shoot herself. He also reported that Myers had fired a shot inside the home before their arrival and provided deputies with a note believed to be a suicide note. Deputies escalated a standoff with a noisy public address system, which caused her to hide inside and make threats toward approaching officers. After she exited the home with a gun and walked toward police, she positioned herself between two parked patrol cars with a gun allegedly pointed at a deputy. The deputy opened fire and killed her. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Vernon Parish Coroner’s Office.

On 12/19/2021, deputies responded to a single vehicle crash near Borgne Avenue around midday and identified Eric Lavon Nelson Sr. Officers determined felony warrants existed and requested Bogalusa Police assistance. Nelson moved away on foot and officers chased him through nearby areas before deploying a Taser and taking him into custody. After arrest he complained of breathing difficulty while detained and lost consciousness. He died after the detention. Authorities reviewed the incident and filed no criminal charges. A federal civil rights lawsuit followed the death.

On November 23, 2021, at approximately 9:00 a.m., a Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a motorcycle near the intersection of LA-700 and Shelly Road in Kaplan, Louisiana, due to the rider not wearing a helmet. The motorcyclist, identified as 43-year-old Kelly Vaughn (also known as Kelly Griffin), did not provide identification and reportedly gave false information regarding his identity. Police alleged that he retrieved a handgun from his saddlebag; however, they admitted that he did not threaten them. Officers drew their firearms, and Vaughn fled on foot into a dense grassy field. Law enforcement established a perimeter, and the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office Special Response Team, along with Louisiana State Police, deployed aerial drones to locate him. Negotiators demanded his surrender, but Vaughn responded by firing shots at the drones and stated he would end his life rather than be taken to jail. At approximately 4:24 p.m., many hours after the standoff began, Vaughn died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during the SWAT standoff. It is unknown whether he had committed any crimes, as police did not comment further.

On November 21, 2021, at approximately 10:00 p.m., officers from the Louisiana State Police and the East Jefferson Levee District Police Department were directing traffic at the intersection of Airline Highway and Severn Avenue in Metairie, Louisiana, due to traffic signal repairs. Several concerned motorists alerted the officers to a man walking along Airline Highway near Causeway Boulevard, armed with a firearm and a knife. The individual was identified as 52-year-old Jabari Farafiai Asante-Chioke of LaPlace. He fled on foot when police demanded that he stop. A trooper fired a Taser. Asante-Chioke turned and pointed a gun. A state trooper and two East Jefferson Levee District officers all opened fire at the same time and killed him. He was pronounced dead on the highway.

On November 4, 2021, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Louisiana State Police fatally shot 36-year-old Barry Rigsby at the Wisner Apartment Complex on Maple Street in Wisner, Louisiana. Rigsby was wanted for questioning in a triple homicide that had occurred earlier that day in Shreveport. Police located Rigsby's abandoned vehicle near the apartment complex. Franklin Parish Sheriff's deputies began evacuating residents. During the evacuation, Rigsby fired shots at the deputies and locked himself inside an apartment. Louisiana State Police, including SWAT and police negotiators, arrived. After a standoff lasting four hours, during which Rigsby continued to fire shots at police and threw a fire extinguisher at them, police shot and killed him.

On November 1, 2021, at approximately 4:11 p.m., the Houma Police Department responded to a disturbance call at Downtown Court and East Main Street in Houma, Louisiana. Upon arrival, the first officer encountered 36-year-old Johnny McGee, who reportedly charged at the officer while holding a screwdriver. The officer issued commands to stop and attempted to create distance; however, McGee continued to advance. A second officer arrived on the scene as McGee allegedly raised his arm with the screwdriver toward one of the officers, prompting an officer to discharge his service weapon. McGee was struck by gunfire and transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Family members later revealed that McGee had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the encounter.

On October 4, 2021, shortly before 11:30 a.m., Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's deputies responded to a disturbance at a business on Tunnel Boulevard in Houma, Louisiana, involving 45-year-old Shane E. Hartman, who was reportedly seen with a knife. Deputies took the knife, had him evaluated by medical personnel, and released him. Later, deputies received a second complaint that he was impeding traffic. Hartman asked to be taken to a business within the city limits. When police drove him, he refused to exit the patrol vehicle. Officers engaged him in an altercation during which he allegedly took a taser away from a charging deputy. Another deputy opened fire, striking Hartman in the upper torso. The bullet from the deputy also injured the hand of another deputy. Hartman died from his injuries.

On October 2, 2021, at approximately 2:00 a.m., 58-year-old Wade Anthony Adams Sr. called 911, stating that he was armed with a shotgun, consuming alcohol and marijuana, and expressing suicidal intentions, indicating that officers would have to kill him. Westwego Police officers located Adams in a church parking lot, but he refused to communicate and drove away, leading to a two-hour low-speed pursuit around the city. Officers eventually boxed in Adams' vehicle in the 400 block of Fourth Street. As they approached, Adams reportedly reached for his shotgun. Officers opened fire and killed him. Adams was pronounced dead at the scene.

On 09/11/2021, Shreveport police officers responded to a trespassing or loitering call at West 70th Street in Shreveport, Louisiana. Police stated Desmond Lewis moved away from officers after they arrived and that an officer later caught up with him. Police alleged a prolonged physical altercation occurred. Police alleged that during the struggle, Lewis produced a firearm. The officer opened fire and shot and killed Lewis.

On September 1, 2021, at approximately 3:30 PM, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO) deputies responded to reports of a public disturbance in the 6400 block of Park Manor Drive in Metairie, Louisiana. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Anne Marie Schilly, a 65-year-old woman, reportedly agitated and behaving erratically. Witnesses stated that Schilly was directing racial slurs and profanities toward parish workers repairing a water main. Specific remarks included the use of the N-word and commands such as, "Go back to your country," directed at the workers. This behavior was captured by bystanders on video.

Deputies approached Schilly to de-escalate the situation, but she refused to cooperate, entered her vehicle, and fled the scene. In the process, Schilly dragged one of the responding deputies with her car for a short distance before breaking free.

A high-risk pursuit ensued, with Schilly driving erratically through Metairie, endangering other motorists and pedestrians. During the chase, she reportedly attempted to strike multiple individuals with her vehicle. Eyewitness accounts describe her driving onto sidewalks and into oncoming traffic, exacerbating the public safety threat. The pursuit concluded near the intersection of Veterans Boulevard and Lisa Drive, where heavy traffic temporarily halted Schilly’s vehicle.

As deputies approached her car to take her into custody, Schilly accelerated, striking a second deputy. In response, Deputy Jane Smith fired multiple shots into the driver’s side of her vehicle, striking Schilly. Her car traveled an additional 40 to 50 feet before coming to a stop. Schilly was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the pursuit, a vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic on Louisiana Highway 28 East near Azalea Lane and collided head-on with another vehicle. Kerri E. Fiser, 51, who was not involved in the pursuit, was killed as a result of the crash.

On 08/13/2021, deputies of the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office pursued a vehicle eastbound on Interstate 220 at Lakeshore Drive at over 100 mph. The pursued driver crashed and then fatally shot himself while sitting behind the wheel of the vehicle.
