On April 28, 2021, at approximately 5:16 a.m., officers from the Lake Charles Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at a hotel located at 1000 North Lakeshore Drive in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Upon arrival, officers determined that shots had been fired from a hotel room toward Interstate 10, prompting the closure of the highway and diversion of traffic to Interstate 210 for safety reasons.

The individual inside the hotel room, identified as 44-year-old Kyner Gene Rollins of Los Angeles, California, had locked himself in the room. SWAT was called and forced entry into the room. They found Rollins dead from a gunshot wound. The circumstances surrounding his death and who killed him were not disclosed by police.

Upon arrival, officers observed a man, identified as 63-year-old David Arseneaux, holding a .40 caliber handgun to the head of his wife, Lisa Arseneaux, a 62-year-old female.

On April 10, 2021, at approximately 7:00 p.m., deputies from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office responded to a disturbance call in the 6500 block of Park Manor Drive in Metairie, Louisiana. A woman reported that her boyfriend, 30-year-old Joshua Alexander Mitchell, had sexually abused a child and threatened to kill her. She also informed deputies that Mitchell was armed.

Upon arrival, deputies located Mitchell at the apartment. Around 9:00 p.m., Mitchell exited the residence and pointed a firearm at a deputy, prompting the deputy to fire his weapon. Mitchell retreated into the apartment.

The Jefferson Parish Crisis Management Unit was activated and arrived at the scene. Mitchell emerged a second time, again pointing his firearm at deputies. A Crisis Management Unit deputy fired at Mitchell, forcing him to retreat into the apartment once more.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., the Crisis Management Unit breached the apartment door and found Mitchell deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. A gun was recovered near his body.
