On August 8, 2021, at approximately 2:00 a.m., a shooting occurred in the parking lot of The District nightclub, located at 4607 Johnston Street in Lafayette, Louisiana. The venue had hosted a concert by Baton Rouge rapper Webbie earlier that evening.
An off-duty moonlighting Lafayette Police Department officer, working security at the event, approached a group involved in an altercation. The officer claims that as he approached, one or more individuals fired at him. The officer returned fire, killing Dashawn "Big Top" Batiste, a 22-year-old man from Breaux Bridge. A female bystander was also shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was unharmed and was not wearing a body camera at the time of the incident.

Louisiana State Police conducted an investigation and determined there was no probable cause to charge the officer. In September 2022, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed by Batiste's daughter, alleging that inadequate security measures at The District contributed to the fatal incident. The lawsuit names The District, Lafayette Consolidated Government, and an unnamed Lafayette Police officer as defendants.

On July 25, 2021, at approximately 12:15 p.m., deputies from the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office (APSO) arrived at an apartment on Kathy Meadows Lane in Crowley, Louisiana, to apprehend a 35-year-old man. The man was wanted for questioning in a Jennings homicide investigation and had an active warrant in Acadia Parish.
Upon arrival, the man fired at the deputies, injuring one. In response, at least one deputy returned fire. After several unsuccessful attempts to establish communication, the APSO SWAT team entered the residence and found the man deceased from gunshot wounds.

Upon being located by Madison Parish deputies, Jackson fled and crashed into a ditch alongside U.S. Highway 65. He then produced a handgun, leading deputies to secure the scene and call for assistance.

Louisiana State Police personnel, including police negotiators, arrived and engaged in a standoff. During this time, Jackson exhibited erratic behavior, such as shooting into his own vehicle and walking into an adjacent field with the firearm. The police fired less-lethal weapons in an attempt to disarm him. Subsequently, Jackson approached the safety perimeter and attempted to draw his handgun, prompting troopers to open fire, resulting in his death.

On March 18, 2021, deputies from the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office arrived at 14554 Pecan Road in Keithville, Louisiana, to execute an arrest warrant for an individual other than William "Billy" Walls, a 68-year-old male. Walls, a neighbor, permitted deputies to search his mobile home. During the search, Walls became agitated and attempted to re-enter his residence. For officer safety, he was detained and placed in the back of a patrol car. While in custody, Walls experienced a medical emergency.
