On September 27, 2021, Auburn Police Department officers responded to a report of a woman being held against her will at the Value Inn on Center Street in Auburn, Maine. Upon arrival, officers forced entry into the motel room, discovering that the occupants had fled through a window. Sgt. Steven Gosselin encountered 36-year-old Joseph Arbour in the parking lot. During the encounter, Arbour allegedly pointed a firearm at Sgt. Gosselin and threatened to harm himself. Despite commands to drop the weapon, Arbour reportedly began moving toward a busy area, leading Sgt. Gosselin to fire three shots, striking Arbour in the back. Despite repeated commands to drop the knife, Wood did not comply. He was reportedly holding a knife to the woman’s throat, and the situation quickly escalated. Deputy Isaac Ward, fearing for the woman’s safety and the potential for further escalation, discharged his firearm, fatally wounding Wood.

The woman was unharmed, and after the shooting, she was able to safely exit the residence. Donald White, 44, broke into a residence at 48 Knapp Street in Livermore Falls, Maine, and held three individuals hostage, including his ex-girlfriend, her father, and her new boyfriend. White restrained them with zip ties and threatened them with firearms. During the standoff, he also planted multiple explosive devices in the home.

One of the hostages managed to escape and alerted police. A coordinated response from local, state, and federal law enforcement ensued, involving the Livermore Falls Police Department, Maine State Police, Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office, and the FBI. The remaining two hostages were released, but the standoff continued for 17 hours. It ended when police forcibly entered the home, finding White dead.
