On July 15, 2021, deputies from the Arenac County Sheriff's Office, along with officers from the Michigan State Police and the Saginaw-Chippewa Tribal Police Department, responded to a domestic violence situation at a residence in the 2100 block of Whites Beach Road in Standish Township. Upon arrival, they found that one of the two men involved in the incident was already deceased. The other man, Joshua I. Smith, was inside the house and refused to come out. Officers escalated a standoff. The situation concluded around 3:30 p.m. when Smith shot and killed himself.

On 07/10/2021, at approximately 6: 21 p.m., a Michigan State Police trooper responded to reports of a man, identified as Randy Jenkins Jr., walking in the vicinity of W Brewer Road& S Morrice Road in Bennington Township, exhibiting strange behavior. Upon encountering Jenkins, the trooper attempted to use a Taser to subdue him after he became combative, but it had no effect. Jenkins allegedly then produced a firearm and began shooting. The trooper tried to disarm Jenkins, who reportedly aimed the gun again. Police opened fire and killed him.

On 06/24/2021, at approximately 4: 10 p.m., an Iron County Sheriff's Office deputy and an Iron River Police Department officer were dispatched to conduct a well-being check in Iron River. During the encounter, at least one officer opened fire, killing David Ronald Bridgette. The reasons why police shot and killed him have not been disclosed.

On 06/21/2021, around 3 p.m., a Michigan State Police trooper was dispatched to a mobile home park in Hamilton, Michigan, following reports of an in-progress breaking-and-entering incident. Upon arriving at the scene, the trooper encountered Virgil Lee Taylor in the front yard of a home. An altercation ensued, during which the trooper opened fire and killed Taylor. Details regarding the nature of the altercation have not been fully disclosed.

On 06/19/2021, during a Juneteenth parade, a Flint Police Department officer was involved in a shooting incident with Briana Sykes, a 19-year-old woman, near the location of 2905 SaginawStreet in Flint. According to police reports, Sykes for undisclosed reasons allegedly fired at the officer. The opened fire, killing her. The incident occurred around 2:14 p.m. and took place during the city's Juneteenth celebration. The investigation was handed over to the Michigan State Police at the request of the Flint Police Department.

On 06/17/2021, starting at about 7: 59 p.m., the Chippewa County Central Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting a truck driving recklessly in the Pickford area, heading north towards Sault Ste. Marie. Deputies from the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office located the truck traveling northbound on M-129 and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The truck did not stop and continued at high speed with police chasing until it collided with the rear of a small car driven by bystander Katelyn Jo "Katie" Robinson at the intersection of M-129 and 20th Street. The collision propelled Robinson's car into an electric pole, causing her to be ejected. She died at the crash site. The truck then continued northbound, eventually crashing after hitting a stop sign, an electric pole guide wire, three parked cars, and a building. The driver of the truck was transported to War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, also with life-threatening injuries.

On 05/22/2021, at approximately 8: 50 a.m., Michigan State Police troopers were dispatched to a domestic assault incident in Beaver Township. Johnny Owen King, aged 63, had been residing on the property with his uncle and his uncle's ex-wife. The reported assault was between King and his uncle's ex-wife. Upon arrival, the troopers entered a travel trailer on the property and requested King to come outside for a conversation. King refused to comply, and according to reports, he armed himself with a .177 caliber pneumatic gun, commonly referred to as a BB gun. The troopers then shot and killed King. The incident is under investigation.

On 05/19/2021, an Ionia County Sheriff's deputy was dispatched to investigate a report of a stolen vehicle. The deputy located the allegedly stolen pickup truck and initiated a pursuit that spanned through Clinton County and ended in Eaton County. The chase concluded in Mulliken where Robert NazmiRouhman Jr. allegedly reversed his truck into the deputy's SUV, an action which police classified as felonious assault on a police officer. In response, the deputy shot and killed Rouhman Jr.

On 05/06/2021, deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence at the intersection of Mead Road and Wimberly Drive in Rochester Hills following a complaint that a man was threatening suicide. Initial contact was made with the man via phone, during which a single gunshot was heard, and communication was subsequently lost. At approximately 7 a.m., deputies entered the home and discovered the man deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On 04/29/2021, following the theft of vehicles from a dealership, officers from the Sterling Heights Police Department initiated a pursuit of a 17-year-old boy. The chase concluded when his vehicle collided with a Chevrolet Malibu at the intersection of 15 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue in Sterling Heights, killing a 20-year-old female bystander in the Malibu.

On 04/28/2021, a deputy from the Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a home in the 6500 block of South Edon Road in Reading, Michigan, following a complaint about a dog at large. Upon arrival, the deputy was allegedly bitten by the dog. He shot and killed the animal. Following this, Oscar Herrera, the dog's owner, allegedly confronted the deputy while armed with a knife. The deputy used deadly force, shooting and killing Herrera. The incident is under investigation by Michigan State Police. The family of Oscar Herrera, represented by Attorney Ian Fallon, has viewed the bodycam footage but has called for its public release for transparency and accountability. They argue that Herrera was in emotional distress due to the death of his dog, and the situation could have been handled differently by the deputy.

On 04/21/2021, an officer from the Wyoming Department of Public Safety noticed a vehicle without a license plate near 44th Street SW and S. Division Avenue in Grand Rapids, which matched the description of a stolen car reported earlier that evening. The Wyoming Department of Public Safety is under the city of Wyoming, Michigan, not the state of Wyoming. The officer attempted to pursue Shynia Jones, who was driving the vehicle, but she did not stop. Shortly after, another officer spotted Jones' car and escalated a chase to between 80 and 90 mph. The officer began a pursuit but allegedly “called off the chase” moments before she crashed into another vehicle, then a boulevard median at high speed, became airborne, lost control, and collided with a light pole on the east side of the Street, killing her.

On 04/20/2021, officers from the Detroit Police Department responded to an incident at E 8 Mile Road and HannaStreet in Detroit involving a man in a mental health crisis. During the encounter, the man reportedly stabbed an officer in the leg with a knife. In the ensuing chaos, another officer accidentally shot the injured officer in the hand. Police opened fire, killing him.

On 04/20/2021, a 22-year-old male driving a Dodge Charger was allegedly chased at high speed by officers of the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department when he lost control of his vehicle at the intersection of ConnerStreet and E Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, landed under the trailer of a semi-truck, killing him. Police did not disclose the reasons why they escalated the fatal chase.

On 04/18/2021, an incident involving five people being shot and wounded occurred in Detroit, Michigan. A person who was subsequently struck by a car nearby and died was believed to have been involved in this shooting. Following the initial incident, police initiated a pursuit of a black GMC driven by a 27-year-old male man traveling north on Gratiot Avenue. The chase continued until the driver reached 8 Mile Road, where he exited his vehicle at a strip mall. While fleeing on foot, the man allegedly fired shots at pursuing officers. On 04/04/2021, Michigan State Police troopers were conducting a welfare check at around 8 p.m. when they discovered a 62-year-old woman dead from an apparent homicide in her home in Lake Township. The house was empty except for the victim at the time of discovery. Through investigation, troopers identified a man, Adam Briggs, a 30-year-old relative of the victim. A broadcast alert was issued for Briggs. Shortly after 1 a.m., the Cadillac Police Department spotted the vehicle associated with Briggs and attempted a traffic stop. Briggs did not stop. Police escalated a with multiple agencies. During the chase, Briggs allegedly fired shots at the pursuing officers. No one was hit. Missaukee County Sheriff's deputies used stop sticks to disable Briggs' vehicle. Briggs then ran away on foot. His body was found shortly after 6 a.m. with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, confirming his death as a suicide.

On 03/21/2021, at approximately 2: 34 p.m., police from the Troy Police Department, Royal Oak Police Department, and Oakland County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting report in the 400 block of West 14 Mile in Clawson. Upon arrival, they discovered that a man had left between his house and a neighbor's before retreating back into his own home, where he barricaded himself. Several hours into the standoff, a drone was used to assess the situation, revealing that the man was deceased inside his residence from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On 03/17/2021, at approximately 1: 45 a.m., officers from the Madison Heights Police Department began pursuing a vehicle without a license plate. The pursuit was terminated at the border of Royal Oak. Royal Oak Police Department officers then spotted the same vehicle and attempted to stop it, but the driver, SouhibZokari, did not stop. Police continued to chase west on 11 Mile Road with speeds exceeding 90 mph untilZokari lost control of his car and crashed into a light pole on the side, killing him.

On 03/01/2021, Chandra Moore, a 55-year-old male, was the subject of an arrest warrant issued by Cincinnati police for the shooting of five people in Cincinnati on February 28, 2021, resulting in the deaths of his wife and two others. After fleeing to Detroit, Moore was located at the Rivertown Inn & Suites. The Detroit Police Department, aware of his location, set up surveillance and waited for him to leave the motel. At approximately 9: 50 a.m., Moore exited the building and approached his car. Upon noticing the police presence, he allegedly opened fire on the officers. In response, the officers returned fire, killing Moore. This incident followed Moore's flight from Cincinnati where he was involved in a mass shooting incident.

On 02/28/2021, around 2 p.m., officers from the Royal Oak Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 2700 block of Oliver Road following a report of a domestic dispute between a father and his adult son, Jason Raymond Sugg. Police reported that Sugg was intoxicated and had assaulted his father, who then called 911 for assistance. The situation escalated into a standoff that lasted several hours. At approximately 8: 30 p.m., Sugg emerged from the house and allegedly pointed a rifle at the officers. Police opened fire, killing him. The incident is under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

A person reported to the police station claiming to be a victim of domestic violence and alleged they had been assaulted with a firearm. The victim identified Alonte Murphy as the alleged assailant. Around 5 p.m., police observed Murphy arriving in a car. Murphy was reportedly armed with a semiautomatic handgun and exchanged gunfire with officers. Law enforcement shot and killed Murphy.

On 02/22/2021, an incident occurred on the Jeffries Freeway near Schaefer Highway in Detroit where an off-duty Detroit police officer was involved in a vehicular collision. The officer struck and killed a man who was fleeing from the location of a shooting on I-96, which had resulted in the deaths of two individuals. The fleeing man was attempting to escape on foot when he was hit by the officer's vehicle. Details were not disclosed.

On 02/21/2021, Michigan State Police troopers responded to a call regarding an armed individual exhibiting irrational behavior in the 9700 block of North Wyman Road, Blancha Road. Andrew Allen Courser was reported to have fired a gun near homes and yelled at passing vehicles. Upon arrival, along with a Home Township police officer, Courser allegedly shot at the officers, who returned fire. Courser then barricaded himself in a barn approximately a quarter of a mile away from the initial scene. After a standoff lasting about four hours, Courser emerged from the barn, pointing a gun at the police. Troopers then shot and killed him. The incident is under investigation by the Michigan State Police.

On 02/08/2021, at approximately 1 a.m., officers from the Detroit Police Department were responding to a request for backup with their lights and sirens activated in a marked Ford Explorer traveling east on Jeffries Service Drive. The police vehicle collided with a Lexus IS 250 driven by Clifford Woodards II at the intersection of Jeffries Service Drive and W. Chicago in Detroit, killing bystander Woordards. The officer driving, TeairaFunderburg, was later charged with involuntary manslaughter and willful neglect of duty following the investigation, which revealed she was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at a red light. Woodards, a prominent defense attorney and civil rights activist, was known for his sharp wit and community involvement. His daughter, Melissa Connelly, filed a $50 million lawsuit against the city of Detroit, alleging negligence and seeking justice for her father's death. The lawsuit highlighted that Funderburg had a history of speeding and traffic violations. Woodards was driving lawfully at the time of the crash, within the speed limit and with the right of way. The impact caused Woodards' vehicle to flip over and crash into a light pole. Officer Funderburgwas suspended without pay.In August 2022, Funderburg pleaded no contest to willful neglect of duty as part of a plea agreement, leading to the dismissal of the involuntary manslaughter charge. As a condition of the plea, she agreed to resign her Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certification, effectively ending her career as a police officer. She was sentenced to one year of probation and 100 hours of community service.

On 01/07/2021, at approximately 6: 20 a.m., members of the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team were executing a high-risk search warrant at a residence located in the 400 block of East Broad Street, Chesaning, Michigan. The warrant was being served on behalf of the Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (BAYANET). As the troopers approached the front of the house, John R. Neitling confronted them while armed with a gun. In response, the troopers shot and killed him.This was reportedly the third drug raid at his residence in the past five years. An internal investigation found no violation of departmental policies and the officers returned to work. Neitling was described in his obituary as someone who enjoyed fishing, camping, music, and spending time with family and friends, and he worked at Maximum Roofing among other odd jobs. He is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepdaughter, and extended family.
