On 11/08/2021, around 3: 45 p.m., an employee of Pita Way Mediterranean Grill was reported to have brought a gun to the restaurant located at 6331 S Saginaw St in Grand Blanc but did not enter the establishment. Instead, the person barricaded themselves inside their vehicle. Officers from the Grand Blanc Township Police Department and Michigan State Police responded to the scene. During the ensuing standoff, the individual shot and killed themselves.

On 10/24/2021, officers from the Kentwood Police Department responded to reports of a man, Kim Douglas Ropp, stabbing his roommates at 4500 GrantwoodAvenue SE in Kentwood. Upon arrival, police found Ropp struggling with a roommate. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by firing bean bag rounds at both Ropp and the roommate. However, Ropp reportedly charged towards the officers, leading to them using deadly force, resulting in Ropp's death.

On 10/22/2021, around noon, officers from the Detroit Police Department attempted to stop a man who was wanted. He fled to a nearby gas station where he encountered an uninvolved citizen, asking to borrow a phone due to a domestic incident. The citizen took him to his home, allowing him to use the phone, where the man admitted he was on the run from police. The citizen left unharmed, but the fugitive stayed inside the house. A Crisis Intervention Team, including social workers specialized in mental illness, was called to assist. The standoff concluded around 7 p.m. when the man was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On 10/22/2021, at approximately 9: 10 a.m., Lance James Hines, who was wanted by the Jackson Police Department in connection with the fatal shooting of Eric Jay Rutz, was reported to be in a gray 2012 Toyota Prius at Advance Auto Parts located at 135 W Prospect St in Jackson. Police officers surrounded the vehicle after receiving the 911 call. Shortly after, a single gunshot was heard from inside the vehicle. Upon investigation, officers found Hines deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On 10/13/2021, Michigan State Police were seeking Steven David Schumann, who was wanted for absconding parole related to a charge of felonious assault. When troopers approached Schumann's vehicle in the 9200 block of Lindsey Road in Plainwell, a woman riding with him became involved in the situation. Schumann allegedly produced a weapon, escalating the encounter into a hostage situation. Two troopers then shot and killed Schumann. The hostage sustained injuries during the encounter.

On 10/04/2021, at approximately 3 a.m., the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office received an emergency call from a Shell gas station located at 10305 Miller Dr in Galesburg. The nature of the emergency was not specified in the call. Upon arriving at the scene, a deputy was confronted by R.V. Johnson II, who was armed with a knife. According to reports, Johnson lunged at the deputy multiple times. When Johnson continued to advance, the deputy shot him once, killing him. The incident was captured on bodycam footage, which showed the interaction and the subsequent shooting. Johnson had called 911 from the gas station eight minutes before the shooting, indicating he needed assistance but did not specify the nature of the emergency. The investigation was handed over to the Michigan State Police. The Kalamazoo County Prosecutor later cleared the deputy.

On 09/29/2021, around 10: 45 p.m., the Berrien County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call regarding a man with a knife at the Franklin Woods Mobile Home Park located at 1950 S. 13th St. in Niles Charter Township. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Chaz Nathan McGowen, who allegedly was in possession of a knife. Despite attempts to de-escalate the situation with less-lethal rounds, McGowen reportedly did not drop the knife and charged at the deputies, leading them to use deadly force. McGowen was shot and killed by the deputies. The incident is under investigation by Michigan State Police.

On 09/01/2021, police from the Battle Creek Police Department responded to a call around 3: 55 p.m. regarding Kamren Brown attempting to break into a woman's home. Upon arrival, a foot pursuit ensued. According to reports, during the confrontation, Brown lifted a gun to his head and shot himself as an officer also discharged their weapon, reportedly at the same moment. Brown died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, despite the officer's shot.

On August 14, 2021, deputies from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office encountered Kyle Anthony Goidosik at a gas station. Goidosik was believed to have been involved in an earlier pursuit in a nearby community. Upon being approached by law enforcement, Goidosik allegedly drew a firearm and pointed it at the deputies before attempting to escape in his vehicle.

During the subsequent chase, Goidosik reportedly fired several shots from his car, one of which struck Deputy Ryan J. Proxmire, causing him to crash his patrol vehicle. The chase escalated until Goidosik lost control of his vehicle, drove into a field, and his car became immobilized. After exiting his vehicle, Goidosik continued to shoot at the approaching deputies. Officers opened fire and killed Goidosik.

On August 8, 2021, around midnight, an estimated 200 people and cars were participating in drag racing and drifting at the intersection of Grand Boulevard and Milwaukee in Detroit. Undercover officers from the Detroit Police Department were monitoring the situation from an unmarked vehicle. During the event, their vehicle was struck by another car. The front seat passenger of the vehicle that collided with the officers' car reportedly got out with a handgun. Undercover officers opened fire and killed the passenger.

On August 4, 2021, Michigan State Police received information about a man and woman in possession of a stolen minivan at a rest area. During an attempted traffic stop, they did not stop. Police escalated a high-speed chase. The troopers eventually lost sight of the vehicle but later discovered the scene where the stolen minivan and two other vehicles had crashed in the front yard of a home on East Maple Street and East Street in Holly Township.

The man and woman then entered an occupied home, releasing the homeowners without harm. The woman surrendered to the police, but William Lanham, the man, fired at officers while remaining inside the house. Eventually, Lanham was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the residence.

On July 26, 2021, deputies from the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a home at the intersection of N. State Streetand Bush Street in Gobles around 7:30 p.m. due to a report of domestic assault. After securing a warrant, they returned at about 9:30 p.m. Jacob Bender's wife informed the deputies that Bender was hiding in a basement crawl space. A deputy then used a K-9 unit to apprehend him. Bender allegedly stabbed the police dog three times. Deputies fired a taser, then opened fire, killing him.

On July 15, 2021, deputies from the Arenac County Sheriff's Office, along with officers from the Michigan State Police and the Saginaw-Chippewa Tribal Police Department, responded to a domestic violence situation at a residence in the 2100 block of Whites Beach Road in Standish Township. Upon arrival, they found that one of the two men involved in the incident was already deceased. The other man, Joshua I. Smith, was inside the house and refused to come out. On 07/10/2021, at approximately 6: 21 p.m., a Michigan State Police trooper responded to reports of a man, identified as Randy Jenkins Jr., walking in the vicinity of W Brewer Road& S Morrice Road in Bennington Township, exhibiting strange behavior. Upon encountering Jenkins, the trooper attempted to use a Taser to subdue him after he became combative, but it had no effect. Jenkins allegedly then produced a firearm and began shooting. On 06/17/2021, starting at about 7: 59 p.m., the Chippewa County Central Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting a truck driving recklessly in the Pickford area, heading north towards Sault Ste. Marie. Deputies from the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office located the truck traveling northbound on M-129 and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The truck did not stop and continued at high speed with police chasing until it collided with the rear of a small car driven by bystander Katelyn Jo "Katie" Robinson at the intersection of M-129 and 20th Street. The collision propelled Robinson's car into an electric pole, causing her to be ejected. She died at the crash site. The truck then continued northbound, eventually crashing after hitting a stop sign, an electric pole guide wire, three parked cars, and a building. The driver of the truck was transported to War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, also with life-threatening injuries.

On 05/22/2021, at approximately 8: 50 a.m., Michigan State Police troopers were dispatched to a domestic assault incident in Beaver Township. Johnny Owen King, aged 63, had been residing on the property with his uncle and his uncle's ex-wife. The reported assault was between King and his uncle's ex-wife. Upon arrival, the troopers entered a travel trailer on the property and requested King to come outside for a conversation. King refused to comply, and according to reports, he armed himself with a .177 caliber pneumatic gun, commonly referred to as a BB gun. The troopers then shot and killed King. The incident is under investigation.

On 04/21/2021, an officer from the Wyoming Department of Public Safety noticed a vehicle without a license plate near 44th Street SW and S. Division Avenue in Grand Rapids, which matched the description of a stolen car reported earlier that evening. The Wyoming Department of Public Safety is under the city of Wyoming, Michigan, not the state of Wyoming. The officer attempted to pursue Shynia Jones, who was driving the vehicle, but she did not stop. Shortly after, another officer spotted Jones' car and escalated a chase to between 80 and 90 mph. The officer began a pursuit but allegedly “called off the chase” moments before she crashed into another vehicle, then a boulevard median at high speed, became airborne, lost control, and collided with a light pole on the east side of the Street, killing her.

On 04/04/2021, Michigan State Police troopers were conducting a welfare check at around 8 p.m. when they discovered a 62-year-old woman dead from an apparent homicide in her home in Lake Township. The house was empty except for the victim at the time of discovery. Through investigation, troopers identified a man, Adam Briggs, a 30-year-old relative of the victim. A broadcast alert was issued for Briggs. Shortly after 1 a.m., the Cadillac Police Department spotted the vehicle associated with Briggs and attempted a traffic stop. Briggs did not stop. Police escalated a with multiple agencies. During the chase, Briggs allegedly fired shots at the pursuing officers. No one was hit. Missaukee County Sheriff's deputies used stop sticks to disable Briggs' vehicle. Briggs then ran away on foot. Upon arrival, along with a Home Township police officer, Courser allegedly shot at the officers, who returned fire. Courser then barricaded himself in a barn approximately a quarter of a mile away from the initial scene. After a standoff lasting about four hours, Courser emerged from the barn, pointing a gun at the police. Troopers then shot and killed him. The incident is under investigation by the Michigan State Police.

On 02/08/2021, at approximately 1 a.m., officers from the Detroit Police Department were responding to a request for backup with their lights and sirens activated in a marked Ford Explorer traveling east on Jeffries Service Drive. The police vehicle collided with a Lexus IS 250 driven by Clifford Woodards II at the intersection of Jeffries Service Drive and W. Chicago in Detroit, killing bystander Woordards. The officer driving, TeairaFunderburg, was later charged with involuntary manslaughter and willful neglect of duty following the investigation, which revealed she was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at a red light. Woodards, a prominent defense attorney and civil rights activist, was known for his sharp wit and community involvement. His daughter, Melissa Connelly, filed a $50 million lawsuit against the city of Detroit, alleging negligence and seeking justice for her father's death. The lawsuit highlighted that Funderburg had a history of speeding and traffic violations. Woodards was driving lawfully at the time of the crash, within the speed limit and with the right of way. The impact caused Woodards' vehicle to flip over and crash into a light pole. Officer Funderburgwas suspended without pay.In August 2022, Funderburg pleaded no contest to willful neglect of duty as part of a plea agreement, leading to the dismissal of the involuntary manslaughter charge. As a condition of the plea, she agreed to resign her Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certification, effectively ending her career as a police officer. She was sentenced to one year of probation and 100 hours of community service.

On 01/07/2021, at approximately 6: 20 a.m., members of the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team were executing a high-risk search warrant at a residence located in the 400 block of East Broad Street, Chesaning, Michigan. The warrant was being served on behalf of the Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (BAYANET). As the troopers approached the front of the house, John R. Neitling confronted them while armed with a gun. In response, the troopers shot and killed him.This was reportedly the third drug raid at his residence in the past five years. An internal investigation found no violation of departmental policies and the officers returned to work. Neitling was described in his obituary as someone who enjoyed fishing, camping, music, and spending time with family and friends, and he worked at Maximum Roofing among other odd jobs. He is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepdaughter, and extended family.
