On July 6, 2024, a Sherburne County Sheriff's Deputy initiated a pursuit of a stolen 2017 Ram pickup truck on Highway 10 in Becker, Minnesota. The driver failed to stop, leading to a high-speed chase with speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. The pursuit continued into the city of Becker, where the fleeing vehicle ran a red light at the intersection of Highway 10 and Liberty Lane, colliding with a Toyota Camry driven by 36-year-old Christopher Vyskocil. The crash involved a total of four vehicles. Vyskocil suffered severe head trauma and was airlifted to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale. He succumbed to his injuries on July 15, 2024. Christopher Vyskocil was a nurse at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center and is survived by his wife, Brittany, and their four children. On June 30, 2024, at approximately 11:45 p.m., officers from the Crookston Police Department and deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a disturbance involving multiple individuals at the Care and Share Homeless Shelter on East Third Street in Crookston, Minnesota. Upon arrival, law enforcement encountered 44-year-old Christopher Ryan Junkin, who was reportedly damaging property and ignoring commands to cease his actions.

In an attempt to subdue Junkin, Officer Corey Rich deployed his Taser, and Deputy April Hansen utilized both a chemical irritant and her Taser. Despite these efforts, Junkin continued to advance toward the officers as they retreated down a hallway. At this juncture, Officer Nick Fladland discharged his firearm, striking Junkin. Officers administered medical aid; however, Junkin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer Fladland, with five years of law enforcement experience, was placed on critical incident leave following the shooting. Notably, this incident marked the second fatal shooting involving Officer Fladland within a six-week span; he was previously involved in the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old man armed with a hatchet on May 16, 2024.

On June 27, 2024, at approximately 9:20 p.m., North Branch Police Department officers responded to a report of an intoxicated and suicidal woman, identified as 36-year-old Jamie Ann Crabtree, walking near the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Elm Street while carrying a bottle of alcohol and a handgun in a case. Officers confronted Crabtree and claimed she did not acknowledge their commands to drop the weapon. Officer Kyle Miller then fired PepperBall rounds. On June 14, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Minnesota State Patrol troopers initiated a pursuit of a motorcycle operated by 24-year-old Dante Anthony Bjorklund on Minneapolis highways. The pursuit was terminated when Bjorklund exited the highway and entered residential streets in south Minneapolis. A State Patrol helicopter maintained visual contact with the motorcycle. Subsequently, Bjorklund collided with a stationary State Patrol squad car, which had its emergency lights activated, at the intersection of Cedar Avenue and 51st Street East. Bjorklund sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. He died from his injuries approximately a week later.

On June 12, 2024, at approximately 9:19 p.m., Minneapolis Police Department officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man seen with a handgun and allegedly threatening people near the 3400 block of Hiawatha Avenue. Officers arrived and identified the man as 39-year-old Michael Warren Ristow. He fled on foot, and police chased after him.

On June 7, 2024, at approximately 12:26 a.m., a Crystal Police Department officer observed a motorcycle traveling at a high speed on eastbound 42nd Avenue North near Winnetka Avenue. The officer initiated a traffic stop, but the motorcyclist, identified as 21-year-old Lucas Zander Weyenberg, allegedly fled. The officer pursued Weyenberg; however, after losing sight of the motorcycle, the officer allegedly "called off the chase." Shortly thereafter, Hennepin County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a single-motorcycle crash at the intersection of 42nd Avenue North and West Broadway Avenue in Robbinsdale. Police arrived and found Weyenberg lying in the street with severe injuries. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Robbinsdale Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol are conducting the investigation.

Distance Between Pursuit Termination and Crash Site:
The pursuit was terminated near the intersection of 42nd Avenue North and Winnetka Avenue. The crash occurred at the intersection of 42nd Avenue North and West Broadway Avenue. The distance between these two intersections is approximately 0.5 miles. Police only commented that they chased the motorcycle at a very high rate of speed. Using the speed of 100 mph as an example, it would take a motorcycle 15 seconds from the time a chase is called off until fatal crash 156 seconds. This time span is not enough time to slow down and de-escalate speed and it is unknown whether the driver knew that seconds before his death that police had decided to call off the chase.

Olivia Flores, an 18-year-old passenger in the Ford Focus, suffered critical injuries and was transported to St. Marys Hospital, where she later died. Crookston PD were sent to a call about an apparently intoxicated and naked man in the street with a hatchet showing erratic behaviors just after midnight in Crookston. Police arrived, tasered, fired beanbags at the increasingly agitated man and Officer Fladland finally fired at least 12 bullets into his body.

Officer Nick Fladland would go on and shoot and kill Christopher Junkin on July 9, 2024.

On July 9, 2024, the BCA confirmed that multiple bullet wounds had killed Junkin and simultaneously recommended not to charge officer Fladland for this killing. It was known at the time of this recommendation that he had already killed a second person days prior to being cleared. He had been cleared back to work at an unknown time before being cleared by BCA as he was back on duty on June 30, 2024 to kill Christopher Junkin.

On 05/06/2024, St. Paul Police Department officers responded to a 911 call regarding a mental health crisis involving 41-year-old Pepsi Lee Heinl in St. Paul, Minnesota. The caller reported that Heinl was armed with a knife and behaving erratically, posing a potential threat to herself and others.

On 04/15/2024, deputies from the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a vehicle on Highway 56 near West Concord, Minnesota. On 04/10/2024, deputies from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office attempted to arrest 28-year-old Clint Lavelle Hoyhtya near Crestwood Drive East and Mayview Road in Minnetonka, Minnesota. Hoyhtya was reportedly wanted on an outstanding warrant and was located after a brief search.

Upon confrontation, Hoyhtya allegedly displayed a firearm, prompting officers Christopher Heihn, Tyler Jacob, Keith McNamara, and Steven Tomasko to fire their weapons. Hoyhtya was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the incident, and findings will be reviewed by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office to determine whether the use of deadly force was justified.

On 03/02/2024, Jeffrey Lynn Chapman, a 57-year-old White male, was fatally shot by Wright County Sheriff's Deputy Austin Feenstra during a traffic stop on Ivory Avenue Northeast in St. Michael, Minnesota. According to reports, Deputy Feenstra conducted the stop after identifying a potential violation. During the interaction, Chapman reportedly brandished a firearm. Deputy Feenstra fired multiple shots, striking Chapman.

Medical personnel were called to the scene, but Chapman was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported during the incident. Police shot and killed him, then realized that he had no knife and the object they had seen was a piece of metal pipe.

On 02/17/2024, Shannon Cortez Gooden, a 38-year-old Black male, was fatally shot by officers from the Burnsville Police Department following a violent standoff at a residence in the 12600 block of 33rd Avenue South in Burnsville, Minnesota. Officers were responding to reports of a domestic disturbance where Gooden was reportedly armed and had barricaded himself in the home with multiple family members, including seven children ranging in age from 2 to 15.

As officers attempted to negotiate, Gooden opened fire, fatally striking Burnsville Police Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, as well as Burnsville Firefighter/Paramedic Adam Finseth. Sgt. Adam Medlicott was also injured but survived. In response to the gunfire, officers returned fire, striking and killing Gooden. He was pronounced dead on location.

No other injuries to family members or additional responders were reported. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an independent investigation into the incident, and findings will be reviewed by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.

On 02/17/2024, Shannon Cortez Gooden, a 38-year-old Black male, was fatally shot by officers from the Burnsville Police Department following a violent standoff at a residence in the 12600 block of 33rd Avenue South in Burnsville, Minnesota. Officers were responding to reports of a domestic disturbance where Gooden was reportedly armed and had barricaded himself in the home with multiple family members, including seven children ranging in age from 2 to 15.

As officers attempted to negotiate, Gooden opened fire, fatally striking Burnsville Police Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, as well as Burnsville Firefighter/Paramedic Adam Finseth. Sgt. Adam Medlicott was also injured but survived. In response to the gunfire, officers returned fire, striking and killing Gooden. He was pronounced dead on location.

No other injuries to family members or additional responders were reported. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an independent investigation into the incident, and findings will be reviewed by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.

On 01/29/2024, Michael James Yanacheak, a 75-year-old White male, died following the use of a Taser by Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Deputy Riley Kampsen during an eviction in Willmar, Minnesota. Deputies were executing a court-ordered eviction at the time of the incident. Yanacheak reportedly resisted attempts to remove him from the property, escalating to a physical confrontation.

During the altercation, Deputy Kampsen deployed a Taser to subdue Yanacheak. After being tased, Yanacheak experienced a medical emergency. Yanacheak was pronounced dead at the scene.

On December 10, 2024, a Minnesota State Patrol trooper attempted to stop a driver for speeding near Interstate 94 and Marion Street in St. Paul. The driver initially stopped but then drove away. Police escalated a "brief pursuit." The trooper allegedly discontinued the chase when the driver exited at Marion Street at high speed, crashing into a concrete wall. Ricky Cobb II was pulled over by a Minnesota State trooper for having defective brake lights. Per official police narrative, he was pulled over and warrants for his arrest were found. Troopers allege that he reversed the car and reached for something, causing trooper Londegran to shoot and kill him. It was later discovered that he had no warrants which also means that troopers had no reason to try to physically tear him out of his car as they tried, leading to a confrontation that caused his death.

FBI agents tried to serve an arrest warrant for car theft in Minneapolis Thursday afternoon together with SWAT on the 3700 block of Dupont Avenue N. The target of the warrant, Chue Feng Yang, locked himself inside the home and a standoff went on for several hours.
