On 07/05/2021, the Le Center Police Department and Le Sueur County Sheriff's Office responded to a call after a woman reported she was assaulted and strangled by Michael Lee Elie. A standoff started around 9: 20 p.m. Two children, ages 12 and 4, were still hiding in the house. Police talked to Elie on the phone, but he refused to come outside. They convinced him to let the children leave the home. Officers breached the home at around 7: 15 a.m. and found Elie dead with a self-inflicted gunshot.

On June 3, 2021, members of a U.S. Marshals Service task force attempted to arrest 32-year-old Winston Boogie Smith Jr. on an outstanding warrant for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The arrest took place in a parking ramp near West Lake Street in Minneapolis. During the encounter, Smith was reportedly uncooperative and produced a handgun. On 03/18/2021, officers from the Bloomington Police Department responded around 6: 15 p.m. to a report of a man walking with a gun. They found Anton Lamont Burnes firing a handgun from a pedestrian bridge. A Bloomington officer fired his service weapon at Burnes, but it was not immediately clear whether he was struck by the gunfire. Burnes continued shooting his handgun from the bridge for the next 10 minutes, but police did not return fire. Burnes eventually climbed outside the bridge's safety fencing and shot himself, falling onto I-494 below and dying.

The man continued driving, passing through multiple jurisdictions before being knocked off the road by a Ramsey County sheriff deputy at North McKnight Road. During the stop, the deputy encountered Shannon Michael Savela. According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, a struggle occurred between the deputy and Savela.
During the encounter, another vehicle arrived at the scene. David Jay Savela, Shannon’s brother, exited that vehicle. Authorities reported that gunfire was exchanged during the confrontation. Deputy Troy Mayer and Sebeka Police Officer Jason Worm discharged their service weapons.

On 02/26/2021, Duluth Police officers responded to a residence near W. 24th Avenue and W. 4th Street after receiving a report of a physical domestic incident. Officers were informed that David “Pogo” Joseph Wayne Conwell, 37, was inside the residence and had active felony warrants. A woman exited the home safely after officers arrived.
Officers established a perimeter and began a standoff that lasted several hours. During the confrontation, Conwell fired a weapon from inside the residence. He shot and killed Duluth Police K-9 Luna. Officers exchanged gunfire with him during two separate encounters. Officers ultimately fired multiple rounds, striking Conwell. He died from gunshot wounds inside the residence.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigated the shooting. In August 2021, the St. Louis County Attorney announced that the officers’ use of force was legally justified under Minnesota law. The names of the officers who fired were not publicly released in initial reporting.

On January 14, 2021, at around 3:15 p.m., the Brooklyn Park Police Department responded to reports of a man walking through yards in the 7500 block of 83rd Avenue. Initially, a caller reported that this man had broken into his home but then fled. Upon arriving at that location, officers were redirected by another family who said the same man had just entered their home. Several children managed to escape, but the man found a 7-year-old boy hiding in a closet and refused to release him. The man claimed he was armed with multiple guns and would not surrender. After negotiations, the standoff ended around 10:30 p.m. when the man took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot.

The officer had noticed the stolen car, confirmed via license plate check that it was stolen the previous day, and escalated to chase that ended when the pursued vehicle crashed into bystander Alison Annen, killing her.
