On 07/06/2021, the Minneapolis Police Department responded to a call for a carjacking and robbery. Around 12: 30 a.m., Officer Brian Cummings was chasing the man when he hit and killed Leneal Frazier, a father of five who was the uncle of Darnella Frazier, the teenager who recorded the video of George Floyd's death. The person police were chasing got away.

On 07/05/2021, the Le Center Police Department and Le Sueur County Sheriff's Office responded to a call after a woman reported she was assaulted and strangled by Michael Lee Elie. A standoff started around 9: 20 p.m. Two children, ages 12 and 4, were still hiding in the house. Police talked to Elie on the phone, but he refused to come outside. They convinced him to let the children leave the home. Officers breached the home at around 7: 15 a.m. and found Elie dead with a self-inflicted gunshot.

On 07/04/2021, the Olivia Police Department responded to an incident where around 2: 20 a.m., an "altercation" ensued, and Officer Aaron Clouse shot Ricardo Torres Jr. Police said a shotgun was recovered from near where Torres was shot. Details as to what precipitated the killing were withheld by police.

On June 3, 2021, members of a U.S. Marshals Service task force attempted to arrest 32-year-old Winston Boogie Smith Jr. on an outstanding warrant for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The arrest took place in a parking ramp near West Lake Street in Minneapolis. During the encounter, Smith was reportedly uncooperative and produced a handgun. Officers fired at Smith, fatally wounding him. The incident led to protests and civil unrest in the Minneapolis area. An investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension concluded that the officers' use of deadly force was legally justified.

On 05/29/2021, a 26-year-old man, Michaellee Ramos Avieda, was chased by law-enforcement after a shooting in Minneapolis. The chase ended in Elk River, Minnesota at Proctor Avenue NW and Highway 10, where his vehicle crashed. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension found Avieda dead inside the vehicle from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On 05/05/2021, officers attempted to detain Michael Charles Apicella near 115 16th Ave NW in Rochester after he failed to provide identification during contact related to a commercial vehicle stop. As troopers moved to take him into custody, Apicella produced a firearm and shot himself. He died at the scene. Reporting indicated he had been operating a semi tractor and the encounter unfolded in a parking area with law enforcement present.

On 04/18/2021, officers from the Burnsville Police Department found Bradley Olsen driving a vehicle with stolen plates when he subsequently crashed. Officers soon received a report that he was involved in a carjacking. Police pursued the carjacked vehicle, and Olsen allegedly fired at pursuing officers before crashing the vehicle and continuing to shoot at police, who then shot and killed him. Officers Dan Anderson, Brent Murray, Paul Oelrich, and Chris Walswick fired their guns.

On 04/11/2021, officers from the Brooklyn Center Police Department pulled over Daunte Wright for an alleged traffic violation related to expired registration tags. Officers then reportedly discovered that he had a warrant for his arrest. Police tried to arrest Wright, but he stepped back into his car, and officers struggled with him. Officer Kim Potter, 48, shouted, "Taser," and then shot and killed Wright with her duty weapon. Potter resigned from the police and was arrested and faces a charge of second-degree manslaughter.

On 03/18/2021, officers from the Bloomington Police Department responded around 6: 15 p.m. to a report of a man walking with a gun. They found Anton Lamont Burnes firing a handgun from a pedestrian bridge. A Bloomington officer fired his service weapon at Burnes, but it was not immediately clear whether he was struck by the gunfire. Burnes continued shooting his handgun from the bridge for the next 10 minutes, but police did not return fire. Burnes eventually climbed outside the bridge's safety fencing and shot himself, falling onto I-494 below and dying.

On 03/05/2021, police in Maple Plain attempted to pull a man over for speeding and driving erratically. The man continued driving, passing through multiple jurisdictions before being knocked off the road by a Ramsey County sheriff deputy at North McKnight Road. Two shots reportedly were fired from the driver's seat. As officers approached, the man appeared to be unconscious from a head wound. Police said he fatally shot himself.

On 02/27/2021 at approximately 8:45 p.m., a Wadena County deputy conducted a traffic stop near 205th Avenue and 270th Street in North Germany Township. During the stop, the deputy encountered Shannon Michael Savela. According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, a struggle occurred between the deputy and Savela.
During the encounter, another vehicle arrived at the scene. David Jay Savela, Shannon’s brother, exited that vehicle. Authorities reported that gunfire was exchanged during the confrontation. Deputy Troy Mayer and Sebeka Police Officer Jason Worm discharged their service weapons.
Shannon Michael Savela and David Jay Savela sustained gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead. Deputy Mayer and Officer Worm were also struck by gunfire and transported for medical treatment. Both officers survived.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigated the incident. The Wadena County Attorney later announced that the officers’ use of force was justified under Minnesota law. Body camera and squad footage were later released publicly.

On 02/26/2021, Duluth Police officers responded to a residence near W. 24th Avenue and W. 4th Street after receiving a report of a physical domestic incident. Officers were informed that David “Pogo” Joseph Wayne Conwell, 37, was inside the residence and had active felony warrants. A woman exited the home safely after officers arrived.
Officers established a perimeter and began a standoff that lasted several hours. During the confrontation, Conwell fired a weapon from inside the residence. He shot and killed Duluth Police K-9 Luna. Officers exchanged gunfire with him during two separate encounters. Officers ultimately fired multiple rounds, striking Conwell. He died from gunshot wounds inside the residence.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigated the shooting. In August 2021, the St. Louis County Attorney announced that the officers’ use of force was legally justified under Minnesota law. The names of the officers who fired were not publicly released in initial reporting.

On January 29, 2021, officers from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to a car-jacking at gunpoint near the Pike Lake Super One grocery store in Saginaw, Minnesota where Scott Michael Jordon had allegedly forced a woman and her 16-year-old son from their vehicle. After they were safely out of the car, officers followed. They engaged in a shootout. Jordon was found dead. Police stated that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On January 14, 2021, at around 3:15 p.m., the Brooklyn Park Police Department responded to reports of a man walking through yards in the 7500 block of 83rd Avenue. Initially, a caller reported that this man had broken into his home but then fled. Upon arriving at that location, officers were redirected by another family who said the same man had just entered their home. Several children managed to escape, but the man found a 7-year-old boy hiding in a closet and refused to release him. The man claimed he was armed with multiple guns and would not surrender. After negotiations, the standoff ended around 10:30 p.m. when the man took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot.

On January 8, 2021, around 11 a.m., officers from the Robbinsdale Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle due to an active felony warrant for the registered owner. Following a brief pursuit, the vehicle was disabled, and officers managed to block it in. Brian Andren, identified as the driver, exited the vehicle armed with a knife. Despite commands to drop the weapon, Andren did not comply. Police fired a taser and then, Officer Brian Sloat opened fire and killed him.

On January 7, 2021, at approximately 3 a.m., a driver allegedly ran a stop sign at Atlantic Street and Minnehaha Avenue while driving a stolen Ford Focus at 61 mph in a 30-mph zone upon the driver spotting a St. Paul police officer focusing om him. The officer had noticed the stolen car, confirmed via license plate check that it was stolen the previous day, and escalated to chase that ended when the pursued vehicle crashed into bystander Alison Annen, killing her.
