On 08/28/2021, deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a fight involving Ingmar Von Strandberg and threats that he would kill others and himself. Police stated Strandberg later drove south in a white van and was found pulled over along U.S. 95, where an Esmeralda County deputy was attempting to negotiate with him while he sat in the passenger seat. Police stated deputies attempted to convince Strandberg to exit the vehicle and that he said he would get out with a gun and that officers would have to kill him. Police stated Strandberg exited the vehicle holding what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it toward deputies. Deputies opened fire. Police stated Strandberg then sat up and again pointed the object toward deputies, who fired additional shots and killed him.

On 07/27/2021, Nevada Highway Patrol troopers pursued a vehicle driven by 60-year-old Douglas Claiborne on Interstate 15 near Las Vegas. The chase intensified when the driver struck Trooper Micah May, critically injuring him. Troopers then opened fire and killed Claiborne at the scene. The Clark County Coroner ruled his death a homicide caused by gunshot wounds to the head and torso.

On 06/16/2021, Nevada Highway Patrol responded after gunfire struck a Nevada Department of Transportation worker in a construction zone along State Route 278. Troopers identified a white van leaving the area at high speed and pursued the vehicle. During the pursuit, police engaged Zachary Minissale with gunfire. Minissale then stopped and a prolonged standoff followed on State Route 278. Nevada Highway Patrol took Minissale into custody shortly before 1:30 p.m. He was found with a fatal gunshot wound and died following the encounter. Minissale was 34 years old. The investigation into the police shooting was reported as pending at the time of coverage.

On 05/05/2021, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex on Fremont Street. Officers encountered two men running through the complex and detained them. Police said the men reported they had been shot at by William Holt. Officers went to Holt’s apartment and reported hearing a gunshot from inside. As officers established a perimeter, Holt exited the apartment holding a firearm. Officer Erik Lindberg opened fire, killing Holt at the scene.

On April 28, 2021, a high-speed vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of East 9th Street and Sutro Street in Reno. A 2007 Scion driven by a man fleeing law enforcement entered the intersection and collided with a 2003 Honda Accord occupied by Sariah Sheppards and others. Sheppards was transported to Renown Medical Center and later died from her injuries. The driver of the fleeing vehicle, Jesse Allen Bennett (33, of Eugene, Oregon), was arrested and faces multiple charges including DUI causing death and reckless driving. The Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Northern Command West Multi-Disciplinary Reconstruction Team is investigating.
