Rochester PD chased a vehicle across town, causing a fatal crash on East Main Street in downtown Rochester on Jan. 7, 2022. On December 24, 2021, officers responded to a domestic violence incident at 203 Mers Way in Dolgeville, New York. Carson Dobson, 24, allegedly broke into his mother's home and stabbed her multiple times before leaving the residence. Troopers Andrew Gorinshek and Jennifer Greenwood of the New York State Police, along with a Dolgeville Police Department officer, located Dobson a short distance away.

On December 20, 2021, at approximately 4:10 a.m., uniformed officers from the New York City Police Department responded to reports of a man armed with a knife and a gun near 1090 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, New York. Upon arrival, officers observed Eudes Pierre, 26, holding a knife in one hand while keeping his other hand concealed in his coat pocket.

A foot pursuit ensued, during which officers attempted to incapacitate Pierre using Tasers, but the efforts were reportedly unsuccessful. According to police, Pierre then rushed at the officers while armed with a folding knife with a three-inch blade. Officers discharged their firearms, fatally striking Pierre.

On December 19, 2021, at approximately 7:43 p.m., a deputy from the Chemung County Sheriff's Office observed a 2018 Honda motorcycle traveling east at a high rate of speed on W. Water Street in West Elmira, New York. The deputy attempted to stop the motorcycle, which had been reported stolen out of Ithaca. The motorcyclist, identified as 36-year-old James Thigpen, initially slowed down but then turned around and sped westbound on W. Water Street, driving against the flow of one-way traffic.
The deputy did not pursue the motorcycle further and radioed the Communications Center to report the situation. Shortly afterward, the motorcycle collided with a 2016 Ford Fusion. Thigpen was pronounced dead at the scene.

On December 16, 2021, at approximately 3:10 a.m., an off-duty NYPD lieutenant was leaving La Boom nightclub at 56-15 Northern Boulevard in Queens when he was confronted by several armed individuals wearing masks. The men attempted to rob the officer, possibly targeting his jewelry.

A gunfight ensued, during which the off-duty lieutenant fired eight shots, and the men fired nine shots. The officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Elmhurst Hospital in critical but stable condition. One 20-year-old suspect was shot in the chest and stomach and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The deceased man had a prior arrest for gang assault in February 2020.

On November 11, 2021, at approximately 4 p.m., NYPD officers pulled over 65-year-old Brian Astarita for allegedly speeding in a gray Jeep Cherokee near Bay 8th Street in Brooklyn, New York. As the officer approached the vehicle, Astarita fled, prompting a pursuit. During the chase, Astarita reportedly rammed the patrol car after it stopped in front of his Jeep.

On October 19, 2021, at approximately 11:40 p.m., Suffolk County Police officers in a marked police cruiser attempted a traffic stop on a 2004 Toyota Tacoma with stolen license plates. The alleged driver, Robert Hengeveld, 50, failed to comply and fled from officers, leading to a pursuit.

During the chase, the Toyota Tacoma collided with a Honda at the intersection of North Ocean Avenue and Expressway Drive South in Holtsville, New York. The driver of the Honda, 19-year-old Starlin Manuel Diaz Felipe, was killed in the crash. Hengeveld was arrested and charged with reckless driving, unlawfully fleeing a police officer, criminal possession of stolen property, and multiple bench warrants.

On October 13, 2021, off-duty NYPD officer Yvonne Wu was waiting at the Brooklyn apartment of her ex-girlfriend, Jenny Li, located near 19th Avenue and 79th Street. When Li returned to the apartment accompanied by 24-year-old Jamie Liang, Wu allegedly shot both women.

On October 4, 2021, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Walton Police officers responded to a mental health call at a residence on Griswold Street in Walton, New York. Upon arrival, the responding officer made contact with 66-year-old Paul J. Weeden inside the home.
During their interaction, Weeden reportedly pointed what was believed to be a firearm at the officer. The officer ordered Weeden to drop the weapon. When he allegedly failed to comply, the officer shot and killed Weeden.

On September 21, 2021, at approximately 11:29 a.m., the Cayuga County 911 Center received a report of shots fired in Auburn, New York. Officers from the Auburn Police Department responded to the scene at 12 Wheeler Street. Upon arrival, officers were met with gunfire coming from an upstairs window of the residence. In response, officers opened fire, fatally shooting 30-year-old Brandi Rene Baida.

On September 18, 2021, at approximately 3:20 a.m., an off-duty U.S. Park Police officer and a female companion were confronted by a group of four individuals, allegedly led by John Shortt, as they left a nightclub near 1440 Utica Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. Shortt and another man wearing a balaclava reportedly approached the officer and his companion and pointed a handgun at them.
The officer drew his own weapon and fired, striking Shortt. Two other individuals, identified as Tyshawn Whidbee and Joshua Cooper, then approached from another direction. Whidbee allegedly pulled out a gun and began firing at the officer and the woman, hitting both of them. The officer fatally shooting Cooper.

On September 15, 2021, members of a U.S. Marshals' task force attempted to serve an arrest warrant at 6 Vinewood Place in Rochester, New York, for 24-year-old Dedrick Jamon James. As officers attempted to apprehend him, James allegedly returned back into the residence and struggled with officers.

On September 11, 2021, 28-year-old Tyrik Mott allegedly fled from police while driving the wrong way on Gates Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, after running a red light at a high rate of speed. The pursuit was initiated by officers, but they reportedly lost sight of Mott's vehicle. Shortly after, Mott's vehicle crashed into another vehicle, causing the car to jump the curb and strike 3-month-old ApollineMong-Guillemin, who was being pushed in a stroller by her mother. Tragically, Apolline was killed in the incident.

On September 5, 2021, at approximately 1:15 a.m., Yorkville Police officers attempted to stop 45-year-old Nathaniel Harvey, who was seen speeding on Oriskany Boulevard in Whitesboro, New York. After initially slowing down, Harvey suddenly accelerated away from the officer.

The officer observed Harvey lose control of his motorcycle, which appeared to hydroplane before crashing. Harvey was pronounced dead at the scene.

On August 29, 2021, at approximately 4:15 a.m., 24-year-old Michael Rosado and his 44-year-old father, Rafael Rosado, were involved in a dispute with a group of individuals on Valentine Avenue in the Bronx. The dispute escalated to a physical altercation, during which Michael Rosado allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired several shots.

Two off-duty NYPD officers, who had just completed their shifts at the nearby 46th Precinct, witnessed the shooting and intervened. Michael Rosado allegedly turned and fired several shots at the officers. In response, the officers returned fire, fatally shooting Rosado. Rafael Rosado was arrested but was not injured in the incident.

On August 27, 2021, at approximately 11:32 a.m., officers responded to a report of a wanted person in Eldridge Park in Elmira, New York. As an Elmira officer entered the park to arrest 53-year-old David G. Wandell, he allegedly pointed a black revolver at her from about 20 yards away. The officer fired several shots, although it is unclear how many shots were fired or if Wandell was struck.

Around 11:45 a.m., officers learned that Wandell had moved to Davis Street and then proceeded to Woodlawn Cemetery. Several officers reportedly confronted Wandell in the cemetery, where he allegedly brandished a weapon. Officers then shot and killed Wandell.

On August 24, 2021, at approximately 3:45 a.m., Buffalo Police officers initiated a pursuit of a vehicle near the intersection of Sycamore Avenue and Fillmore Avenue. The vehicle did not stop. Officers escalated a chase on Bailey Avenue. The pursued vehicle ran a red light and was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of Bailey Avenue and Doat Street.

A woman, who was a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle being pursued, was killed in the crash. The identity of the deceased woman has not been disclosed.

On August 6, 2021, at approximately 8:30 p.m., New York State Police troopers responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in Delancey, New York. Upon arrival, they discovered 28-year-old William Effner had been shot. Roger Peter Lynch, 59, who was allegedly involved in the shooting, left.

Troopers later located Lynch's vehicle along State Route 28 and followed it to his residence. When Lynch pulled into his driveway, he fired shots at the troopers. He then locked himself inside the home.

Troopers, unharmed by the gunfire, engaged in communication with Lynch overnight and into the early morning hours. At approximately 7 a.m., Lynch appeared on the porch of his home and allegedly pointed a weapon toward the officers. In response, the troopers shot and killed Lynch.

On July 24, 2021, 22-year-old Daniel Milton was arrested at Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze after allegedly grabbing the buttocks of a 22-year-old female hospital employee. Police were called and took Milton into custody.

While in custody, Milton reportedly began acting out toward hospital staff and was medicated. Details about the circumstances surrounding his detention and restraint were withheld by the police. Several hours later, Milton was found deceased. His death was determined to be caused by asphyxiation from being restrained.

On July 8, 2021, at around 10:30 p.m., officers from the City of New York Police Department responded to reports of gunshots near Halsey Street and Wilson Avenue in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn. Upon arrival, the officers approached a group of people outside a liquor store and discovered three individuals with gunshot wounds.
The officers were informed that an armed man had fled on foot, heading westbound on Wilson Avenue. They pursued him and activated their body-worn cameras. The officers proceeded halfway down the block and located a man crouched on the sidewalk, holding a firearm in his left hand.

The officers ordered the man to drop the weapon. When he allegedly failed to comply and raised the firearm toward the officers, they opened fire, killing him.

Upon arriving, a confrontation occurred between police and Christopher M. Van Kleeck, 31. During the encounter, one of the officers shot and killed Van Kleeck.

On June 4, 2021, police officers attempted to arrest 29-year-old Timothy Flowers in connection with a triple shooting that occurred in Sumner Park in May 2021. During the initial shooting, Flowers allegedly fired 14 shots into a vehicle at close range, injuring three people, one of whom was left paralyzed.

On May 20, 2021, at around 6:00 a.m., Buffalo Police responded to a report of two people shot on Layer Avenue. The victims, 27-year-old Megan Wisniewski and 63-year-old Margie Ramos, were killed in the shooting. Later, at approximately 11:00 a.m., police located the shooter, 36-year-old Rafael Perez, and engaged in a standoff with him. Around noon, police reported that Perez was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, ending the standoff.

Police responded to a 911 call reporting a person lying in the back seat of a maroon sedan parked on Bauer Avenue and Frontier Trail. Suffolk County Police Officer James Skidmore arrived on the location and approached the vehicle. Upon engaging with Jesse Bonsignore, the officer claimed that Bonsignore exited the car holding a knife and made threats against him. Officer Skidmore physically grabbed Bonsignore, during which Bonsignore reportedly tried to take the officer’s firearm. Officer Skidmore then shot and killed Bonsignore.

The New York Attorney General’s Office investigated the incident, concluding that Officer Skidmore’s use of deadly force was legally justified under New York law, citing the perceived threat during the confrontation. Bonsignore’s family, however, has filed an $85 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Suffolk County Police Department and Officer Skidmore, alleging excessive force and wrongful death.
