On May 22, 2024, Cape Fear Regional Special Teams SWAT Team and Wilmington PD went to the home to conduct a search warrant as part of a narcotics investigation. Wilmington PD applied a tactical distraction device on a window. Malik Samuell Thompson allegedly opened fire, hit a SWAT officer in the ballistic vest. Police shot and gravely injured him. He died six days later on 05/28/2024 in the hospital from his injuries. Fentanyl, Xanax and cocaine were found in the home.

Two men, ages 22 and 24, were found shot to death and a third critically injured. Police followed the shooter, Justin Michael Strawser, to a second location where he hid.
