The man had locked himself inside a hotel room and was believed to be armed. The situation quickly escalated to a heavy police presence, with perimeter control established and the Asheville Police SWAT team deployed to the scene.
Tactical operations included staging armored vehicles, shield-equipped entry teams, and sniper-observer units to cover all angles of the hotel. Negotiators attempted to communicate with the man through the door and via loudspeaker, but no response was received. Officers maintained containment while preparing breaching equipment.
At approximately 3:06 p.m., after sustained non-response, SWAT officers conducted a deliberate entry into the hotel room using ballistic shields and tactical lighting. Inside, they found the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The weapon was recovered nearby.
