The chase was called off just before the vehicle crashed, killing passenger Kayla Lynne Taylor. The driver, a teenager, was arrested and faced charges related to the crash. Walterboro police and Colleton County deputies were sent to a disturbance Tuesday night in a parking lot off Sniders Highway near a Best Western and Ruby Tuesday. Police state that they were called because Horan was slashing car tires. Police arrived, allegedly saw him with a knife, and killed him. His family states that he was a very kind man, suffering from severe military PTSD and a TBI head injury. It is unclear whether he had mental health support. A police dog also died in the shooting. Horan reportedly only had a knife and it is believed that the dog died by police friendly fire.

The investigation into the officer-involved shooting of Joseph Horan V is being handled by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office requested this independent investigation after the fatal incident. The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave, and their identity has not been disclosed.

Two patrol officers saw Nelson Reyes and pulled him over due to warrants for a previous assault. Police engaged in an unknown altercation with him during which he shot and injured an officer and was killed by the second patrol officer.

Ashe County deputies tried to traffic-stop a motorcyclist. He eventually stopped, but was allegedly uncooperative with police. Police admit to an altercation during arrest and state that he died during arrest. Officers gave him Narcan. It is not known whether he was intoxicated as a contributing factor, and how much violence during arrest contributed to his death.

Asheville PD responded to a call that a man had pointed a rifle at someone. Police arrived in the man, identified as 59-year-old Chad Owen Herman, locked himself into the home. Herman had allegedly had a fight with a contract city worker who was installing water meters. During the altercation, Herman allegedly hit the man with a shovel and injured him. Police shot and killed him. The exact details are unknown.

A man called Charlotte-Mecklenburg and reported a stolen vehicle on the shoulder of the I-485. When police arrived, the man who had reported the stolen vehicle and stood on the shoulder, was hit by a motorhome exiting the freeway while at least two police vehicles were also involved in the crash. The person who had been waiting for police was killed.

On August 19, 2024, at approximately 10:30 a.m., deputies from the Haywood County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a suspicious person in the Harmon Den area near the Pisgah National Forest. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Michael Shope, 42, who was reportedly holding a knife.
Shope advanced toward a deputy, prompting an officer-involved shooting. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

On August 18, 2024, a high-speed pursuit involving a 2012 Acura driven by Lindell Albert Powell led to a crash in Spring Lake, North Carolina. Powell, 25, collided with a Honda Accord, killing the passenger in the Honda. The driver of the Honda was critically injured. Powell was hospitalized in critical condition after the crash. The pursuit was initiated by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and ended in a fatal crash at the intersection of North Bragg Boulevard and McKenzie Road​.

Bertie County deputies were sent to the home of Tyshawn Barnes for an involuntary mental health commitment order. Police announced over the loudspeaker orders for Barnes to come out. A family member came out with his hands up as it was evident the residents were worried about police. Barnes exited the residence. Police claim he had a firearm. The weapon did not discharge and he went back into the residence, came out, fired a shot at a patrol vehicle. Police shot Barnes. Three deputies fired shots, killing him.

Police allege that Ryan Rickey Houston stole a vehicle and may have killed a woman. Police chased him for an extended period time on August 2 on Interstate 26 when he crashed with retired police chief of Marshall PD Mike Boone. Both drivers, Houston and Boone, died in the crash.

Greene County deputies allege that Willie Lovett arrived and broke into a home and fought deputies and they had to shoot and kill him. His son explained that his father had dementia, was a gentle person but that he had apparently wandered into a house that looked much like his own one street over when he was confronted and killed by police who mistook him for a burglar. Fayetteville PD arrived at the Kings Court Apartments in Ivanhoe Court to arrest a man for a homicide warrant. He locked himself in the apartment and when he came out, he was allegedly armed and police engaged him in a shootout. Police shot him. He fell and according to an eyewitness, he threw his hands up and was still alive when police walked up and fired 7-10 more shots into him. “They finished him,” stated the eyewitness. Shakoor Williams died.

Yerkoy Shuler was visiting Winston-Salem because his daughter was graduating. Police traffic-stopped him and for unknown reasons asked him to step out of the car. He complied but police claim he tried to reach for something in his car. Police then subdued and handcuffed him and placed him in the back of a police car. He died in the police car from so far unknown causes. Police referred to his death being caused by a “medical episode.” Autopsy results were not made available by police so far.

Rincón López's family disputes the official account, asserting that he sought medical assistance earlier that morning after feeling unwell. According to his mother, he contacted his father from the hospital's emergency room, and the family lost communication with him thereafter. They are demanding clarity regarding the circumstances leading to his death. Rincón López, originally from Playa Vicente, Veracruz, Mexico, had emigrated to the United States in January 2022 due to limited employment opportunities in his hometown. He leaves behind an 8-year-old son, for whom he was the primary provider.

According to Adam Tipton’s fiancée, he was chased by police until he crashed and died at Sycamore Cove in Buncombe County in North Carolina. He had been an Army vet with PTSD.
