On 01/22/2024, a North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper "observed" Kia passenger car speeding. The officer "followed and observed" during which activity, the vehicle accelerated to 104 mph on Interstate 95 Northbound attempted to exit at Brogden Road (Exit 93) near Smithfield, North Carolina. The vehicle veered off the roadway to the left and struck several trees. All four occupants were killed in the crash.

Black Mountain PD allegedly attempted a traffic stop on a man with an unknown previous criminal history who fled, crashed into the side of a motel and locked himself into the motel with a gun. About 35 officers from Black Mountain PD, Montreat PD, Asheville PD and the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the motel according to Black Mountain PD Chief Parker. On October 2, 2023, at around 11:30 p.m., the Dare County Sheriff’s Office responded to a trespassing in progress call in the 1300 block of Burnside Road in Manteo. When police arrived, they shot and killed a person, alleging they had had a knife. No more information has been released thus far.

His family strongly disputes police trespassing claims, stating that the address where he was killed is a family residence where he had been going for years. He had been under great stress because his 18-year-old daughter had been found dead on a hiking trail the year prior. His family states that he had known mental health issues but that he was not a violent person.

Detention officer Brenden James Smith was deer-hunting with a bow and arrow and shot and injured a deer. The deer fled to his neighbor’s land, Mike Houser’s property, and the animal died there. Smith allegedly trespassed onto the property after the deer and the 2 neighbors got into a heated argument that ended when officer Smith shot and killed Houser at or near his home.
