On May 22, 2024, Cape Fear Regional Special Teams SWAT Team and Wilmington PD went to the home to conduct a search warrant as part of a narcotics investigation. Wilmington PD applied a tactical distraction device on a window. Malik Samuell Thompson allegedly opened fire, hit a SWAT officer in the ballistic vest. Police shot and gravely injured him. He died six days later on 05/28/2024 in the hospital from his injuries. Fentanyl, Xanax and cocaine were found in the home.

SUMMARY:On 04/29/2024, officers from a U.S. Marshals Service task force and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department attempted to serve felony warrants to 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes Jr. at a residence on Galway Drive in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hughes fired shots at officers with an AR-15–style rifle. Officers opened fire, killing Hughes.

Four officers were killed, including Deputy U.S. Marshal Sam Poloche, North Carolina Department of Adult Correction officers William Alden Elliot and Thomas Weeks Jr., and CMPD officer Joshua Eyer, who later died at the hospital.

Iredell County deputies were sent to a call where 27-year-old Dylan Maslon was allegedly acting erratically. Police engaged in a shootout with Maslon via SWAT and shot and killed him.

On 04/19/2024, Lieutenant Battle observed 33-year-old Bryan Christopher White shooting at another man. Lieutenant Battle claims that White pointed a gun at him. Lieutenant Battle opened fire, striking White. Both White and the man White shot were transported to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, where they both died from their injuries. A 17-year-old male was also injured. The Elizabeth City Police Department is investigating the first homicide while the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting of White.

On April 13, 2024, at approximately 6:07 p.m., the Henderson County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a man with a gun threatening individuals at the North Mills River Campground. Deputies located a vehicle linked to the incident, driven by 29-year-old Hayden Elias Brook. Brook did not stop when officers approached, and police escalated a pursuit.

The pursuit ended when Brook crashed his van at 3908 North Mills River Road. Deputies exited their vehicles and reported seeing Brook discharge a firearm. Deputies Lance Corporal Zachary Tatham, Stephen McDonald, and Conner Newman fired their weapons. Brook was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy later revealed that Brook died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The Henderson County Sheriff's Office reported Brook fired his weapon during the confrontation, but it is unclear from reports if any of the deputies’ shots struck him.

Two men, ages 22 and 24, were found shot to death and a third critically injured. Police followed the shooter, Justin Michael Strawser, to a second location where he hid. On 02/24/2024, at approximately 10:08 PM, a Gaston County police officer was driving with active blue lights and siren while responding to a call for service. The officer's vehicle collided with a civilian vehicle at the intersection of West Franklin Boulevard (US-74) and South Webb Street in Gastonia, North Carolina. The driver of the civilian vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The vehicle veered off the roadway to the left and struck several trees. All four occupants were killed in the crash.
