On 09/20/2022, shortly after 2:30 a.m., Hickory police responded after a man called 911 stating he had been shot and intended to kill himself. Officers located the vehicle traveling north on Highway 321 in the southbound lanes. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued north into Caldwell County. Lenoir police deployed stop sticks near the city limits, disabling the vehicle. After the vehicle came to a stop on the northbound side of Highway 321, officers approached and found a 21-year-old man inside suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced deceased. Authorities stated the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office had also been responding to a possibly related shooting report near Startown Road. The Lenoir Police Department investigated the crash and apparent suicide.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Vice Narcotics Unit agents tried to make a traffic stop using the excuse of too dark window tint on Tyrance Benbow. Officers felt if they had gotten a tip that he was going to make some drug purchases, and they attempted to stop him. Fayetteville PD arrived at the home of Jada Johnson grandparents after a call of an attempted break-in. Johnson herself had called police and asked for help. On 06/12/2022, Hudson Police Department officers attempted to stop a vehicle near US 321 and Mission Road. The driver, identified as Jerome Connelly, 36, did not stop. Police chased the vehicle along US 321. During the pursuit, Connelly exited the vehicle while holding a firearm, according to investigators. Officers opened fire and shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assumed control of the independent investigation into the shooting.

On 03/27/2022, Concord Police Department officers went to the Summerlin Apartments on Summerlake Drive SW to conduct a welfare check. Officers arrived with a concerned family member and made contact at the apartment. Police reported that officers then heard gunshots from inside the unit and cleared residents from the building while police established a perimeter. CPD deployed SWAT and crisis negotiators during the standoff. Police later entered the apartment and found the man dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Reporting described the man as in his 60s and did not publicly release his name or race.

Concord PD Officer Timothy Larson alleged that he saw Brandon Gayle combs trying to steal a vehicle. The further alleged that he approached him and combs ignored his commands to stop. Officer Larson engaged him in a physical fight during which he shot and killed him. The family was shown the body cam, but this was not released to the public. The footage allegedly shows that the officer fires five times from a distance of 5-10 feet and hits Combs, pauses to call in the report, and then fires again. Officer Larsen was fired but not charged. He then filed a lawsuit against the city, demanding his job back, the outcome of which is unknown at this time.

Cynthia Coe, 55, was driving down the street in her Hyundai Electra on January 31, 2022, she was hit head-on and killed by a vehicle owned by Lumberton PD that had been chasing another driver.
