Concord PD Officer Timothy Larson alleged that he saw Brandon Gayle combs trying to steal a vehicle. The further alleged that he approached him and combs ignored his commands to stop. Officer Larson engaged him in a physical fight during which he shot and killed him. The family was shown the body cam, but this was not released to the public. The footage allegedly shows that the officer fires five times from a distance of 5-10 feet and hits Combs, pauses to call in the report, and then fires again. Officer Larsen was fired but not charged. He then filed a lawsuit against the city, demanding his job back, the outcome of which is unknown at this time.

Under disputed circumstances, Off-duty Cumberland County Sheriff’s Lt. Jeffrey Hash fatally shot Jason Walker four times and called 911, stating that he fired a gun after the man ran into the road and jumped onto the hood of his pickup truck. Jason Walker was shot 4 times. He had been unarmed.

A group called Fayetteville Activist Movement claimed that Walker was shot and killed after being struck by Officer Hash’s vehicle. They also claimed that the Fayetteville Police Department only shared Hash’s “side of the story” and that eyewitnesses at the scene “revealed the truth.”

Elizabeth Ricks, a nurse who said she provided aid to Walker after the shooting, told protesters on Sunday at a rally organized that Walker was “not acting crazy” before he was shot—and did not “jump on traffic.” A video of Ricks speaking also showed her claiming Hash showed “no remorse” after the shooting.

On 01/03/2022, Brittany Webb, 28, was driving a Honda Accord when she was struck head-on by a man chased by police from a traffic stop initiated by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers for a tinted license plate cover. The chase went the wrong way on Statesville Avenue, before colliding with Webb’s vehicle. Webb suffered critical injuries and died on 01/21/2022 after nearly three weeks on life support. A civil lawsuit filed by Webb’s family is ongoing.

On December 18, 2021, at approximately 7 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers responded to a call about a man who had forced his way into his ex-wife's home on Blairbeth Street in Charlotte, North Carolina. The ex-wife escaped, but the man reportedly held their 13-year-old daughter at knifepoint inside the residence. When officers arrived, the man stabbed the girl multiple times. An officer shot and killed him. The girl was transported to a hospital with serious injuries but survived the incident.

On December 14, 2021, law enforcement attempted to stop Bobby Lee Byrd Jr., 40, in Mitchell County, North Carolina, leading to a vehicle pursuit. On November 28, 2021, Winston-Salem Police officers responded to a disturbance involving weapons at a residence on Bell West Drive in Kernersville, North Carolina. Residents reported that 33-year-old Adam Brent McKnight had assaulted a family member and posed a threat to others. Officers encountered McKnight at the back of the property near a pool house. McKnight emerged holding a machete and reportedly refused repeated commands to drop the weapon. Officers deployed Tasers in an attempt to subdue him. Despite this, McKnight continued advancing toward Officer R.T. Phillips. When McKnight got within a few feet, Officer Phillips discharged his firearm, fatally striking him. McKnight was pronounced dead at the scene.

On November 5, 2021, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a Walmart on Albemarle Road in Charlotte, North Carolina, following reports of a man threatening a store security officer with a firearm. The individual, identified as 33-year-old Derrell Lamar Raney, brandished a gun and refused commands to disarm.
Officers located Raney in the parking lot and repeatedly instructed him to drop his weapon. Body camera footage shows Raney pointing the firearm in the officers' direction. Officers James Longworth and Micah Edmunds, perceiving a lethal threat, opened fire, striking Raney. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or bystanders were injured.
A firearm was recovered from Raney, and CMPD stated that his actions directly endangered public safety. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) conducted a review of the incident, and in April 2022, the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office concluded that the officers' actions were justified.
CMPD released body camera footage of the incident in February 2022, showing the sequence of events leading to the shooting. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave during the investigation, as per standard procedure.

On October 14, 2021, at approximately 2 p.m., Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence on McNair Road in Tarboro, North Carolina, after receiving a report that 32-year-old Jermaine Harris was chasing a family member with a knife. Upon arrival, Harris lunged at one deputy and stabbed him twice in the back. A second deputy, who arrived shortly afterward, discharged their firearm, fatally striking Harris. The injured deputy was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where they were treated and later released.

On October 10, 2021, at approximately 6 p.m., Brunswick County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at 8627 Wanets Landing Road in Leland, North Carolina. Linda Beck, the caller, reported that her husband, 57-year-old Michael Robert Beck, had fired a firearm in her direction twice and expressed concerns about his volatility. Upon arrival, deputies located Beck on the back deck of the residence. He reportedly produced a firearm and pointed it toward the deputies. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Beck allegedly failed to comply. Two deputies discharged their firearms, fatally striking him.

The Brunswick County District Attorney's Office, in coordination with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, reviewed the case and determined that the deputies were legally justified in their use of deadly force.

On October 8, 2021, at approximately 8:51 p.m., Winston-Salem Police officers responded to a 911 call reporting that 46-year-old Gilbert Lee Collison Jr. had broken into a residence on South Main Street. The caller reported that Collison was armed with a shotgun and had threatened to shoot any law enforcement officers who attempted to intervene. Officers learned that Collison had previously pointed the shotgun at his girlfriend during an argument.

The Winston-Salem Police Department, along with SWAT and crisis negotiators, surrounded the residence and made repeated attempts to communicate with Collison. Despite these efforts, Collison fired shots at the officers. At approximately 2:30 a.m., Collison appeared in the front doorway with the shotgun. Officers used a less-lethal impact baton, striking him in the leg, but Collison responded by firing on the officers. Three officers returned fire, fatally striking Collison.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the incident. The three officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.

On September 9, 2021, 35-year-old Christopher Thomas Vaughan became enraged during a trial at the Person County Courthouse after being found guilty of false imprisonment. Vaughan charged toward the judge's bench, prompting two deputies to intervene. During the altercation, Vaughan allegedly attempted to seize the bailiff's firearm. A Roxboro police officer, present in the courtroom, responded by shooting Vaughan. He was later pronounced dead from his injuries.

The officer sustained a broken hand, while the bailiff suffered a head injury and neck scratches during the struggle. Both were treated at a hospital and released. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident, as is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.

On August 27, 2021, at approximately 3:08 p.m., Christopher Corey Moore entered the parking lot of the Greensboro Police Department headquarters and set fire to a marked patrol vehicle. He then assaulted Officer J.M. Chavez, striking him multiple times in the face and head and attempting to choke him. Moore also attempted to seize Officer Chavez's firearm during the struggle.

Officers A.L. Dellinger and R.T. Brooks responded to the scene after hearing the commotion. Observing Moore’s assault on Officer Chavez and his attempt to remove the firearm, Officer Dellinger discharged his service weapon, fatally striking Moore. Officer Brooks also fired his weapon during the incident.

The officers involved were placed on administrative duty while the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation conducted an independent review. The investigation concluded that the use of deadly force was justified under North Carolina law and common law self-defense principles.

On 08/16/2021, officers attempted a traffic stop on a 2014 Kia Forte near 1900 block of US 321 Business South in Newton. The driver pulled over then fled. The pursuit traveled through Maiden and Lincolnton. The vehicle lost control, crashed into a concrete bridge guardrail and caught fire. Kyle Alan Wagner was pulled from the vehicle but died from his injuries en route to hospital.

On August 10, 2021, at approximately 9:10 p.m., a Pamlico County Sheriff's Deputy arrived at 1773 Kennels Beach Road to serve an arrest warrant for 71-year-old Marvin Richard Hitchcock Jr., who had failed to appear in court on charges of driving while impaired and related offenses. Hitchcock was armed with a handgun upon the deputy's arrival, prompting the deputy to request backup. Additional law enforcement officers from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Oriental Police Department, and North Carolina Probation and Parole responded to the location.

For nearly 30 minutes, officers attempted to negotiate with Hitchcock, who continued to hold the firearm in a threatening manner toward himself and law enforcement. Police opened fire, killing him.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) conducted an independent investigation into the incident. District Attorney Scott Thomas will determine the justification.

On July 21, 2021, at approximately 9:00 p.m., a Haywood County deputy initiated a traffic stop on a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 20-year-old Dalton Grey Suttles, who had outstanding felony warrants. Suttles fled westbound on U.S. 23/74 toward Jackson County. Officers from the Waynesville Police Department, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and Jackson County Sheriff's Office joined the pursuit. During the chase, Suttles crossed into the oncoming eastbound traffic lane and collided head-on with a 2005 Nissan Titan pickup truck.

Zenen F. Lopez-Guzman, a passenger in the Nissan Titan, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Titan sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital. The incident is under review, with agencies determining compliance with pursuit policies.
