Police physically tried to subdue him and an altercation began, leading to Kelly reaching for another knife. Police shot and killed him.

On 10/28/2021, officers from the Sioux Falls Police Department and Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about a domestic disturbance involving Elwood Joseph Dwyer Jr. who was Believe to have stabbed three people. Upon arrival, officers reported that Dwyer exited the residence with a knife and charged at the officers. Police shot and killed him. Family members of Elwood Dwyer Jr. questioned why officers did not use nonlethal measures during the confrontation. The family expressed concerns about the use of deadly force in the situation.

During the pursuit, the car drove westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 and crashed head-on into a Kia sedan near mile marker 14.5. The impact killed Elleana Lee Gaddis, her twin sister Isabella Lee Gaddis (17), and Brianna Lynn Foster (18), all from Fishers, Indiana. A fourth passenger, Macy Walts (17), survived with injuries. Parker fled on foot but was captured and later pleaded guilty in 2024. She was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

On 08/15/2021, Newberry County deputies responded to an overturned vehicle on Interstate 26 near the Newberry and Laurens County line. Phillip John Walden reportedly carjacked a Good Samaritan who stopped to help, and police escalated a chase southbound on Interstate 26. During the chase he struck multiple vehicles including a deputy’s cruiser. Near mile marker 91 in Lexington County, he exited the vehicle and moved toward officers, and deputies opened fire and killed him.

On 07/23/2021, retired Rock Hill Police Department Lieutenant Larry Vaughan was found beaten to death inside an apartment complex in downtown Rock Hill. Former Chester County Sheriff’s Deputy Evan Hawthorne, aged 31, was later convicted by a jury on 09/02/2025 for Vaughan’s murder and sentenced to life in prison.

On 05/18/2021, a 22-year-old man from Hilton Head Island was killed in a crash on U.S. 278. His sister alleges the high-speed driving was connected to a nearby police pursuit. The crash occurred when the driver lost control of his car and struck a guardrail. Law-enforcement confirmed the vehicle was traveling at very high speed at the time. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office are considering links to the pursuit.

On April 15, 2021, 56-year-old Stephen B. Swears of Boynton Beach, Florida, died after evading law enforcement. Swears was being pursued by the St. George Police Department and the South Carolina Highway Patrol on US 15 near Fox Run Road, Dorchester County. While fleeing, his vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with another motorist’s vehicle, resulting in his death at 1:30 p.m. No other fatalities were reported, and the crash remains under investigation by the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

On 04/08/2021, a Timmonsville police officer attempted to stop a vehicle driven by 33-year-old Charles Green for undisclosed reasons. Police escalated a pursuit that ended in a crash. After the collision, officers used a taser during the arrest. Green complained of difficulty breathing and later died at the hospital. The family held a press conference demanding accountability from the department.

Officers were investigating an allegedly stolen moped at 1:15 a.m. at a Circle K. A struggle ensued between the officers and a man, during which police stated the man pulled out a gun. Officers shot and killed him.

On February 10, 2021, at approximately 4 p.m., Spartanburg County deputies initiated a traffic stop, but the driver did not stop. Police escalated a pursuit that was described as reckless with excessive speed through heavy traffic and proximity to a school zone. The deputy finally called off the chase near Paradise Lane moments before a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper spotted the vehicle near East Blackstock Road and Hidden Hill Road and took over the chase. The trooper allegedly also called off the chase again as the vehicle collided with a 2015 Honda Accord driven by 36-year-old bystander Jessica Ruth Munyon near the intersection of East Blackstock Road and Bradford Drive.

On February 2, 2021, a Polk County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a car for a traffic violation. Wayne Keith "Weezie" Smith Jr. reportedly fled when the deputy activated his emergency lights. The deputy pursued at speeds reaching 90 mph. The pursuit ended when Smith’s vehicle ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree, resulting in his death.
