Spartanburg County deputies tried to stop a U-Haul truck about 2:20 p.m. on Asheville Highway near Geddes Street for a traffic violation. When the vehicle failed to stop, police escalated a chase until the driver pulled into the Villas at Lawson Creek apartments.
A passenger ran to the back of the apartment complex and into the backyard of a home and then became unresponsive during arrest.

Police Officer Drew Barr responded to a domestic disturbance call at a home on Rossmore Drive at about 2:45 am. and encountered Austin Henderson in the front yard who shot and killed Officer Barr. Henderson then locked himself inside of the home until committing suicide seven hours later.

Darlington County deputies investigated Kenneth Turner for pushing a motorcycle up the street that deputies felt may be stolen. Police claim that he had a gun when confronted and threatened to use it to commit suicide The gun misfired and he then pointed it at officers who shot and killed him.

On 03/12/2022, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a domestic disturbance on Cherry Hall Drive in Lexington. Deputies encountered Allen Russell Meadows outside the residence holding a firearm. Deputies ordered him to drop the weapon. According to reporting, Meadows raised the firearm toward deputies. Deputies opened fire and shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division opened an investigation into the shooting.

Tony Rayfield was allegedly causing damage to his home and Horry County officers were sent. He locked himself into his home and fired shots at police. The home caught on fire and burned with him inside. Police did not fire any shots.

On 02/06/2022, Hemingway police officer Cassandra Dollard attempted to stop Robert Junior Langley after she said he did not stop at a stop sign in Hemingway. Dollard activated her blue lights, caught up with Langley, and began radio traffic, then Langley continued driving and Dollard chased him out of Williamsburg County and into Georgetown County. The chase ended when Langley tried to turn at Choppee Road and Schoolhouse Road, missed the turn at speed, and crashed into a ditch. After the crash, Langley began climbing out through the front passenger door and Dollard fired one shot, striking him in the chest. Langley was unarmed and later died at the hospital. The shooting became controversial because the dash camera video described in reporting did not show a weapon in Langley’s hands, the stop began over a minor traffic allegation, and the shooting occurred miles outside Dollard’s jurisdiction. South Carolina Law Enforcement Division charged Dollard with voluntary manslaughter within days. Reporting also raised questions about why Dollard was hired and certified given prior terminations from other agencies and additional misconduct allegations described in the family lawsuit. Langley’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit and the civil case later resolved through a 1 million dollar settlement that was reported as the liability policy limit and approved by a judge, with claims dismissed with prejudice. Public reporting available as of early 2026 continues to describe Dollard’s voluntary manslaughter case as pending, and I did not find a widely reported verdict or final criminal disposition in indexed news coverage.

On 12/26/2021, Greenville County deputies responded to a domestic related call and were informed Matthew David Snyder had left the residence. Deputies later located him near Twin Falls Road and Black Oak Court and established contact while he possessed a firearm. Deputies and SWAT personnel attempted communication for an extended period at the roadside location. Gunfire occurred between Snyder and deputies and officers opened fire, striking him. He died at that roadside location. State investigators reviewed the use of force and authorities later cleared the involved deputies.

On 12/20/2021, Spartanburg County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to arrest Robert Alan Beach II after he cut off his court-ordered ankle monitor. Deputies attempted a traffic stop. Beach did not stop. Deputies escalated a vehicle pursuit that continued through parts of Spartanburg County. The pursuit ended near Highway 29 in Wellford where Beach barricaded himself inside his vehicle. Deputies surrounded the vehicle and deployed tear gas in an effort to take him into custody. During the standoff, Beach shot himself. He died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Deputies did not open fire during the final encounter. Authorities reported Beach was wanted on outstanding warrants at the time.

On 12/15/2021, Anderson County deputies attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Brandon Mauldin based on outstanding warrants. Mauldin continued driving and deputies chased the vehicle to a dead end behind a residence on Queen Anne Lane where the truck became stuck. Deputies exited their vehicles and issued commands. Officers opened fire during the confrontation and struck him. He died behind the residence. Authorities initiated review of the shooting and reported no criminal charges against deputies.

On 10/14/2021, deputies with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a motorcycle in the Anderson area of South Carolina. The driver continued driving and police chased him through local roads. During the encounter, deputies reported gunfire involving the motorcycle. Deputies opened fire. The motorcycle then crashed, and Robert Allen Maness was pronounced dead at the scene. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division conducted the investigation. The case later resulted in a civil lawsuit, which was resolved with a financial settlement to Maness’s family.

On 10/12/2021, deputies from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle on Interstate 85 near South Carolina Highway 8 in Anderson County after believing the vehicle was stolen. The driver, Jonathan Combs, continued driving and police escalated a chase. Deputies later stopped the vehicle. According to authorities, Combs was armed during the encounter. At least one deputy opened fire, striking Combs. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was requested to investigate the shooting.

On 10/08/2021, deputies from the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a welfare check at an apartment on 3000 Fast Lane in Indian Land, South Carolina, after family members reported Derrick Clinton missing. Officers obtained a search warrant and entered the residence to locate Clinton. Deputies said Clinton was inside the apartment and fired a weapon at officers during the encounter. A Lancaster County deputy returned fire, striking Clinton. Clinton was pronounced dead at the scene. A sheriff’s deputy was also shot and taken to a hospital with injuries that were reported as serious but not expected to be fatal. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.

On 09/18/2021, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the 2500 block of Mona Avenue in West Ashley. Deputies said the subject was firing a weapon and struck a patrol vehicle with gunfire. Officers then exchanged fire with the subject. Deputy Nicholas Vecchione fired at and struck Jason Husted, who later died from a gunshot wound at a hospital. The incident was investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

On 09/11/2021, South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding near SC 905 and McNeil Chapel Road in Longs, South Carolina. Police stated the driver continued driving and crashed into a building. Police stated Tristan Vereen exited the vehicle and that troopers pursued him on foot. Police alleged a trooper attempted to place Vereen under arrest and that a struggle occurred. The trooper opened fire and shot and killed Vereen.

During the pursuit, the car drove westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 and crashed head-on into a Kia sedan near mile marker 14.5. The impact killed Elleana Lee Gaddis, her twin sister Isabella Lee Gaddis (17), and Brianna Lynn Foster (18), all from Fishers, Indiana. A fourth passenger, Macy Walts (17), survived with injuries. Parker fled on foot but was captured and later pleaded guilty in 2024. She was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

On 08/15/2021, deputies from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports that Phillip John Walden had carjacked a vehicle in the Chapin area of South Carolina. Deputies located the vehicle and chased it along Interstate 26. According to limited reporting, the pursuit ended when deputies used force against Walden. He was shot and killed at the scene. Authorities reported that a Taser was also deployed during the encounter. The shooting was reported as under investigation, and no deputies were charged.

On 07/23/2021, retired Rock Hill Police Department Lieutenant Larry Vaughan was found beaten to death inside an apartment complex in downtown Rock Hill. Former Chester County Sheriff’s Deputy Evan Hawthorne, aged 31, was later convicted by a jury on 09/02/2025 for Vaughan’s murder and sentenced to life in prison.

On 07/07/2021, deputies attempted to serve warrants at 207 White Plains Road in Gaffney and encountered Robert Lee Crocker. During the encounter deputies opened fire and killed Crocker. He was 35.
