Temple PD were sent to the 900 block of South 9th Street in Temple for a report of a suicidal man with a gun. Hartley allegedly had a gun and locked himself into a mobile home with police arrived. Police brought a drone and escalated a standoff. Hartley under pressure allegedly fired a shot at a drone that appeared at his window. Police claim he pointed a gun or fired a shot at an officer also. Police shot and killed him through the window of his home while he was inside. There is no record of any mental health help having been sent instead of a militarized standoff that led to his predictable death.

On January 6, 2024, at approximately 2:30 a.m., 19-year-old Aquazia Kennedy was a passenger in a Chevrolet Malibu stalled in the center lane of Interstate 30 near 2nd Avenue in Dallas, Texas. An off-duty Dallas Police Department officer driving a Jeep Wrangler ran and crashed into the stalled vehicle. Kennedy, who was pregnant, was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her baby was delivered and survived in critical condition. Two other occupants of the Malibu sustained serious injuries. The off-duty officer received a medical evaluation and was released from the hospital. The Dallas County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation into the incident.
