On April 11, 20-year-old Brandon Zapata died less than an hour after he was restrained and handcuffed by security officers at La Gran Plaza shopping center in south Fort Worth. The confrontation was recorded on bystander video and Zapata’s family alleges that security which included an off-duty Fort Worth police officer used excessive force and were recorded kneeling on Zapata’s back as they hold him face-down on the floor and he kicks his legs. Family members state they still do not know why he was targeted by police. Police claim that Zapata was “acting erratically” and security guards including the off-duty Fort Worth officer restrained him and put him in handcuffs. He died. He had been seen struggling to breathe during the arrest.
The family alleges that he had asthma, was seen suffering and asked for water which he was denied. The family believes that the security officers’ actions may have impeded his breathing.

Michael Nunez was a school teacher who had mental health issues for which his family says the system had failed him. On the day of his death, he suddenly walked out of school, sent random illogical text messages to family who feared his mental status was disintegrating. He ended up in a park, knocking over trash cans, behaving erratically and he was booked into jail with a plan that he would be sent to Parkland Psych ER. His family was finally able to get a mental health warrant and planned to have him hospitalized but found out that he had been released from jail, had landed in someone’s yard and was reportedly armed and trying to enter someone’s residence. Police arrived and shot and killed him 30 minutes after his warrant to send him to mental health had been signed. DeSoto police chief Costa said that he had not been a danger to self or others.

Ganado PD pulled over a car at a U.S. 59 exit on the west side of Louise. Manuel Saldana Jr. exited his vehicle, provided his drivers’ license and told police he had a felony record. He also told police he had a gun in the car. He was cooperative and forthcoming. Police nevertheless tried to handcuff him and they allege that in the process, they discovered a gun in the vehicle, apparently the gun he had told them about. Under police attack despite cooperating, Saldana ran back to his car and sped off. Police took up chase and found the car had crashed and rolled, ejecting Saldana.
