On 12/10/2022, the Houston Fire Department and Houston Police Department responded to a call about a man in crisis at a residence in the 700 block of Ilex Street. Firefighters reported that the man was pointing a gun at his own head when they arrived, and officers attempted to negotiate with him to surrender, de-escalate the situation, and receive medical attention. After about an hour of negotiations, the man moved toward the 7100 block of Ilex Street, where he continued to refuse to comply with law enforcement commands. SWAT personnel were called in and maintained contact with him. The man ultimately shot himself during the standoff.

On 11/02/2022 at about 11:40 a.m., Dallas Police Department officers responded to a 911 call from Diana Evelyn Ruan, who reported that she had shot a man inside a motel room and was going to shoot herself. Officers who arrived learned both Ruan and the male victim were inside the room. Patrol officers requested SWAT for a barricaded person call. As SWAT attempted to negotiate and prepare for emergency entry, they heard gunshots from inside the room. Officers made entry after forcing the door open and found Ruan deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
