Upon their arrival, Brandon Scott Poulos, 46, fired at officers and then locked himself inside the apartment. SWAT arrived and escalated a standoff. Poulos was later found deceased. On 01/19/2025, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Rigoberto Badillo, a 49-year-old Latino male, was released from the Kaufman County Detention Center. Surveillance footage showed him in the parking lot of the Kaufman County Pet Adoption Center, located within the same complex as the detention center. His personal belongings were found abandoned near the detention center's front doors. His family reported him missing later that day. On 03/02/2025, his body was discovered in a creek approximately half a mile from the detention center. The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office identified the body as Badillo. The investigation into his cause of death is ongoing.

Deputies from Jasper County, Kirbyville Police officers, and a Texas DPS trooper arrived at a home off FM 82 in Jasper County. Upon arrival, officers discovered the individual engaged in a physical altercation with a 14-year-old outside the home. The individual, who was in a wheelchair, was ordered to stop and drop the weapon.
