On 11/20/2024, Michael Scott Hughes, 31, was driving on FM-929 in Coryell County when Woodway Police escalated a pursuit. The incident began during a traffic stop on Highway 84 in Woodway when officers identified Hughes as having felony parole violations and an active arrest warrant. Police alleged that they saw him with a firearm as he drove away. Police pursued him at high speed into Coryell County.

The pursuit transitioned from Highway 84 to State Highway 36 and FM-929. Around 10:00 PM, Hughes lost control of the 2019 Chevrolet, crossed into the eastbound lane, and collided head-on with a 2023 Volkswagen SUV. Hughes was killed on impact. A 61-year-old male passenger in Hughes’ vehicle was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. A 68-year-old passenger in the Volkswagen was transported to a hospital but died from their injuries. The Volkswagen’s driver and two other passengers were hospitalized for treatment of injuries.

When an event was hosted at the Bravo hookah lounge for Kayas Kitchen on 10/27/2024, Day’shaun Colen was seen in a crowd on security video holding a door open to help employees enter the premises. A bystander is seen, grabbing him by the neck and stomach, and one of two armed security guards working for Apex Tactical Security started an altercation for unknown reasons. One of the officers pulled out a weapon and shot and killed Colen. The officer was apparently upset because during the altercation that security themselves started, one of the officers hit their head against the glass door. After that, when Colen was already detained, the guard pulled out a gun and deliberately shot and killed him. After gravely injuring Colen, the guard apparently did not help him, but instead helped another bystander look for a lost ring. The friends of Colen put him in the vehicle and drove him to the hospital themselves as security was of no help.Colon had been unarmed and was attacked by security leading to his death. He was the father of three little girls and was well loved by a very large family.

Walker County deputies were called to the 100 block of twin Creek Drive in Riverside for a man in mental health crisis who may be suicidal. Police shot and killed him.
