AA Virginia State trooper saw a motorcycle and escalated a chase against the driver and hunted the motorcycle at high speed until it crashed into a guardrail, was thrown at the trooper and collided with the patrol car. Nicholas W. Thompson died while being chased for a moving violation.

Prince George deputies saw a Kia with expired temporary tags and escalated a chase because they felt the car may be stolen. The Kia reached speeds where it lost control, crashed into a tree and exploded in a fireball, killing all 4 occupants. Police are working to identify the 4 people as they are too burnt to determine their genders or make any identification.

The children were identified as Serenity Sellman, 15, Dartrel Byers, 17, Zyshaun Cuffey, 15, and Marquay Swan, 14.

Montgomery County deputies saw a “suspicious man” in an area where they were looking for possible burglars and they took up chase. The man ran away with deputies chasing him. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office claims that the man fired a single shot and possibly shot himself and died and that “there is no evidence that officers shot their firearms.” Police are investigating themselves and will hopefully clarify who killd the unnamed man.

A completely naked man forced his way into a home and while he was reportedly peaceful, he appeared to be under the influence of some substances and police arrested him uneventfully. He died during arrest. The fact that he was naked as well as described as erratic suggests a possible drug overdose. Methamphetamines and cocaine are known to produce hyperthermia events causing a person to overheat and commonly remove their clothing. Being naked and erratic is a common sign of drug overdoses that is known by all emergency medical personnel. Police should have been cognizant of the medical urgency when encountering a naked incoherent man.

Virginia Police hunted a vehicle at 115 mph until it crashed into an oncoming train. Haidan Smallwood, the passenger, was killed.

Police had hunted the vehicle because their ALPR apparently reported it as stolen. Smallwood’s family said that their daughter had told them that he had recently bought the vehicle and the family were under the impression that there appeared to be a possible mixup reported to police.

Her boyfriend who had fled from the aggressive police hunt involving several law enforcement agencies in a panic, was charged with 2nd degree manslaughter in her death.

Haidan Smallwood had graduated from high school recently and was enrolled in a nursing program at a university and was looking forward to a productive life.

Andre Bassett Jr. was allegedly involved in a crash and according to police, he left the scene. Prince George County PD tracked him down in a high-speed chase that caused him to crash and die. His mother resorted to speaking to media to inform people that police have not given her any information about her son’s death for weeks since the event and that the PD is refusing to give her information even after a FOIA request. VCU criminal justice professor and policing researcher William Pelfrey pointed out that at 100 mph, someone is certain to die when crashing and questions why police would willingly enter such a mortal risk for the population at large for a mere traffic offense.

On July 10, 2023, 43-year-old Corey D. Faison was driving down James Madison Highway in Fauquier County, near the town of Remington, around 9 p.m. and was being chased by Fauquier County Sheriff’s deputies. He attempted to avoid another car stopped on the shoulder and struck a Culpepper County Deputy’s vehicle.
Faison’s 2003 Honda CR-V proceeded to run off the left side of the roadway and overturn. Faison was ejected from the car and died.

George Bell, a 68-year-old third-party motorist was driving down the street on Powhatan Parkway in Hampton, VA when a police vehicle lost control, hit two unoccupied parked vehicles and then hit a house. George Bell was in the first vehicle that was hit by the officer. He died in the hospital 2 weeks later from injuries. It is not known how fast the officer was driving and why they may have been speeding.

The Fairfax County Police stated that Dana Paul Roman, 45, shot himself in Richmond after being chased by numerous police vehicles for abduction, carjacking, shooting, and stabbing. The car chase ended in a crash and continued on foot. Henrico Police reported Roman had been found and was pursued into Richmond, where he crashed the car and took off on foot whereupon he shot and killed himself in the area of North 35th Street and East Marshall Street.

On June 4, 2033, at approximately 8:00 p.m., the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Emergency Center received a 911 call about a man with a knife behaving erratically inside Walmart on Burgess Road. Police arrived andallege that Brandon S. Mills charged toward them. A Rockingham County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed him.

Daniel Scott Meadows was shot and killed at the intersection of Route 60 and Sandidges Road on 06/01/2023 by an Amherst County deputy who responded to that intersection for reports of a man acting erratically. On May 15, 2023, a Richmond deputy attempted to traffic-stop a vehicle on U.S. 220 but the vehicle refused to stop and sped away. The deputy stayed behind the vehicle and backed off and turned his emergency equipment off. Police allege that he had stopped the pursuit and given up. The driver of the vehicle turned the 4-way flashers on and began slowing down. The deputy followed behind at a distance to see what the issue was but was allegedly not chasing. The abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.Other deputies and officers with the Rockingham PDswarmed the area and used a K-9 from Rockingham PD and soon saw a man on Walnut Ln. The man began running and police allege that he produced a gun. Police allege that the man then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide under police duress.

Fairfax County deputies investigated a UHaul believed to be stolen and found the UHaul and the driver, got into an altercation and Fairfax County deputies shot and killed him in a McDonald’s parking lot. Around 4:30 a.m. on 05/09/2023, a man driving a Ford Escape was fleeing from Amherst County Sheriff's Office deputies south on US-29 at a high rate of speed. The car suddenly veered off the road and crashed. When Amherst deputies checked the vehicle, they discovered that the driver was deceased and had suffered a gunshot wound. He is believed to have committed suicide under police duress.

On April 5, a state trooper was alerted to a Jeep Cherokee that was wanted out of New York for an alleged abduction of a woman that had occurred earlier that day.The Jeep was driving south on I-95 near the Backlick Road exit in Fairfax County when the trooper pulled the driver over. The trooper made contact with the driver before returning to his patrol car where he positively identified the driver as the wanted abduction person. The trooper began walking back to the Jeep when the driver sped away, struck a guardrail, crashed near the Route 234 exit in Prince William County. The vehicle continued south on I-95.
A number of state troopers joined the chase and positioned themselves around the speeding Jeep. The Jeep reportedly eventually ran off the road near the Quantico exit, crashing into the woods. Someone was shooting from the Jeep. Police began firing back.
The abductor and the abducted passenger Tatiana David were injured. Police said the man was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. David died at the scene. Police steadfastly refuse to say who killed hostage Tatiana David, deputies or her abductor.

Henrico Police arrived at the 4000 Cox Road for a possible theft of a cell phone around 4:40 p.m. Upon arriving, a juvenile boy and one woman took off, ran from the police, crossing Dominion Blvd towards Sadler Rd. Henrico County deputies took Irvo Otieno to Central State Hospital on March 6 to admit him as a patient. Otieno died during the intake process. Police admit that he was “physically restrained” during transfer.
Otieno’s autopsy revealed that he died from asphyxiation due to extreme restraint. Ten officers were involved in the death of the unarmed man. Fairfax County PD responded to a report of shoplifting and found a man who fled on foot and was chased by officers. Police claim Johnson refused orders to get on the ground and he was shot and killed by Officers Wesley Shiflett and James Sadler. He had been unarmed. No sunglasses were found and it is not clear whether any shoplifting had ever taken place.

Officer Wesley Shiflett was fired and was indicted on 10/12/2023 by a special grand jury for involuntary manslaughter and firearms charges in the death of Johnson. Shiflett's attorney waived the reading of the two charges, said he believes his client will be found not guilty.

Manslaughter is a Class 5 felony in Virginia. If convicted, he will face one to ten years of imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $2500.

For involuntary manslaughter, the penalty is almost exactly the same as voluntary manslaughter with maximum of ten years in state prison, plus up to a $2500 fine. However, some judges will extend leniency, and yhe may only be jailed for a maximum of one year in county jail.

A trial date has not been set so far but a jury trial is expected within nine months. This page will be updated when new information becomes available.

Ryheam Damon Brown, 26, was “known to police” and was chased by car, then on foot, finally shot dead by Lynchburg, VA cops. The same cop, Officer John Person,had also tried to stop him 3 weeks prior and may have targeted him.It is believed that police may have focused on him because he had a red bandanna hanging from his pants pocket, signifying gang affiliation.

On January 30, 2023, at approximately 9:30 PM, Virginia Beach Police Department officers responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic incident involving 48-year-old Craig Alan Byl, who was armed with multiple firearms and threatening harm to himself and others at a residence on Decathlon Drive.

Upon arrival, officers safely evacuated a female from the residence and established dialogue with Byl, who was observed entering and exiting the home while pointing a shotgun at himself. Negotiations continued for nearly three hours. Around 12:14 AM on January 31, Byl exited the residence with a handgun pointed at his head and continued to brandish different firearms over the next hour.

At approximately 1:15 AM, officers deployed less-lethal munitions in an attempt to subdue Byl, but these measures were ineffective. Byl retreated into the residence and fired multiple rounds at officers through windows using a shotgun and a handgun. Officers returned fire. After the exchange, the VBPD SWAT unit entered the home and found Byl deceased just inside the front door. A shotgun, a 9mm pistol, and several spent cartridge cases were recovered at the scene.

The preliminary investigation suggests that Byl's fatal injuries were the result of police gunfire; however, the official cause of death will be determined by the Norfolk Medical Examiner's Office. No officers were injured during the incident. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of both criminal and administrative investigations to assess compliance with departmental policies and training.

Craig County deputies and Virginia State Patrol arrived at a domestic disturbance and claimed they heard gunshots inside. Kyle Mills allegedly came out of the house with a gun and was shot dead by an unknown number of officers from 2 law enforcement agencies. No officers were charged.

A around midnight on Jan. 22, Chesapeake PD informed VSP that a CPD officer was chasing a Dodge Challenger on Interstate 664 towards the Monitor Merrimac Bridge Tunnel and the driver exited onto Interstate 64. While on I-64 near Jefferson Avenue, the driver lost control of the car and hit a jersey barrier, sending the car across all travel lanes and into another jersey barrier on the left side, endangering all traffic.TilekQuailil Alston, 21, was killed in the police chase. It is unknown why police undertook this dangerous chase. No officers were charged.
